  1. That's not too bad, a little low. Advertised upload I believe is 384 Kbps. Check out this link: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-2097 When you get to it, look into a program called Cablenut, and use VanBuren's custom settings.
  2. Is that RR basic package? Lookin pretty good....how's your upload? Welcome to the forum.
  3. I would suggest using cat-5e rather than cat-6, simply due to the price. For your implementation, they both have the same standards: CAT-5e: up to 1000Mbps over 350 meters. CAT-6: up to 1000Mbps over 550 meters. For the price difference, I would think you'd be best to run cat-5e. As for tools and installation.....dunno. As for a patch panel, do you just need a switch, or do you need a router? Just keep in mind that your network is only as fast as your slowest piece of hardware.
  4. Please check out this topic: http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=10714.0
  5. I found this...it is a chapter from The TCP/IP Guide by Charles Kozierok. I thought it would help people to better understand how TCP works, and how programs like Cablenut work. http://www.nostarch.com/download/tcpip_ch46.pdf
  6. there are 8 bits in a byte, but there are 1024 bytes in a KB (1024 x 8 = 8192). Most people assume that there are 1000, but this is incorrect. Rounding off only decreases accuracy.
  7. IT LIVES!!! Make sure you are testing from different mirrors too: http://www.testmy.net/tools/mirrors.php
  8. I think she wants ya, dude.
  9. Still seeing that spike...different network this time. Looks like those might be typical speeds for an international exit from your country. What you could do is ask your ISP if they have any files hosted locally that you could download to find your speed. What else you could do is host a mirror in your country and test your speeds that way
  10. Can you run a traceroute to wsidecar.apple.com? This way you can compare the route, see if it is just a bad link on that Seabone network.
  11. It would be best to use cablenut on all the PCs, because cablenut is tweaking the operating system.
  12. 310 kB/s = 2539.52 Kbps Much better. Where's the download from?
  13. Well that's not very helpful at all. I would do as I suggested in reply #17 about contacting Seabone with the info. I had to contact a backbone once about improving the route to this site. They resolved it within a couple of weeks (be patient).
  14. WINS = Windows Internet Name Service. This is for resolving NetBIOS names into IP addresses. Since most ISPs block NetBIOS ports (usually 135-139) due to hacking exploits, it should not be necessary unless you are setting up a NetBIOS network in your home....which also should not be necessary. If you are looking under the WINS tab of the advance TCP/IP options in XP, check the box for "enable LMHOSTS lookup" and set the NetBIOS setting to default. But you definitely need to do as Swimmer suggests and get the MAC registered on the ISP network.
  15. That's whack. I would call your ISP and see if they have any answers or resolution for you.
  16. You can try reinstalling/updating the drivers for your wireless card. Then maybe reconfigure your wireless network (encryption, filtering, etc.) from the admin site of your router. Otherwise, check out some factors that affect wireless: http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/factors.php
  17. Oh, just sit back and enjoy!
  18. I would make a direct connection to the modem to be sure. Then follow everything in the sticky very closely.
  19. Cablenut tweaks your registry, optimizing the way Weendows can handle network traffic/data.
  20. Miles_Smiles, if you get the chance, check out the movie Gettysburg (1993).
  21. If you think that tinkering with a setting has slowed you down, you can always run a system restore. Otherwise, I would suggest using cablenut, from the sticky. Is your sister's PC consistenly that speed? If so, it would follow that something running on your PC is slowing you down. Try booting into safe mode with networking (repeatedly tap on F8 when PC reboots) and running a download test.
  22. Are you using the same browser extensions on all the PC's in the house, or the same firewall? Can you provide a traceroute to testmy.net? Make sure that your other downloads (ie. torrents) are not running when you are testing download speed.
  23. Can you provide a traceroute to your ISP? Argentina right? Unfortunately, we do not have a test mirror very close to you. I found a contact for the Seabone network: [email protected] If your traceroute doesn't get better, and your ISP is no help, you may need to contact this network handling the link, and ask them to optimize the route. Provide as much info as you can, including traceroutes performed over at least a couple of days, at different times. They will usually help.
  24. Welcome to the forum, Flav_cool There's a lot of software that can affect your download. Please shut down firewalls, antivirus, antispyware, browser extensions/toolbars, instant messangers, filesharing applications, and download monitors before testing. Also, if you are in central Canada, try testing from my mirror (use the largest file): http://www.testmy.net/o-mirror-FallowEarth If that doesn't do it, read through here: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-2097
  25. Hey, G.F.P and welcome to the forum. The test from the European mirrors look like they get you pretty close to your advertised downstream, but we may be able to boost that a bit. I would not use Azureus as a basis for judging your download speed. It is dependent on the upstream of the sources of the files, the network route, and also on how much the program is monitoring your seeds. A lot of file sharing programs will cap your download if you don't seed enough by their standards. Cablenut works by editing registry values, meaning it actually affects the efficiency at which Windows can handle network traffic. All you need to do is go through the Make It Faster... sticky and when you get to the cablenut part, select the file which is closest to your advertised speeds. It is also important to understand that a lot of software running on your PC can affect your download test results. Please shut down firewalls, antivirus, antispyware, browser extensions/toolbars, instant messangers, filesharing applications, and download monitors before testing. Good luck!
