Well, Apple introduced gigabit Ethernet to a laptop in October 2001 with their PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) model. I don't know about PC laptops, but they surely weren't far behind. I'm not sure if the Mac and PC laptops of those years could consistently pull more than 100 Mbps down via Ethernet, but one thing I would think would be for certain: their statement about needing a less than 2-year old laptop to pull more than 100 Mbps is totally bogus. I was pulling 55 consistently on my 2011 iPad 2. Be persistent but be polite with them. After you pester them a few more times, they'll likely help.

testmy.net always 50% less on upload than everywhere else

I typically run three combined tests in succession to get an average. I usually do that using two different TestMy servers. I also try to run tests at a similar time of day. After some period of days or weeks, you can establish what your baseline "normal" speeds are. Then you can look for trends over time. -

I didn't find any upload test data for you. I guess that's when you weren't logged in. I typically get 5.8 Mbps up on my Time Warner Cable 50 down 5 up plan. -
iPad Air 2 to AirPort Extreme wireless to TrendNet TW100-S4W1CA router, to Arris DOCSIS 3 MODEL: TG862G cable modem. Time Warner Cable Cincinnati 50/5 plan. Tested to TestMy Dallas, New York, and Miami test servers.

That's a huge variation between the 100 and the 6.6.

i would trust the results you get here. If you're getting vastly different results here on TestMy for different times of the day or from minute to minute, the problem could be the ISP, or it could be your equipment. If you're using wireless, try plugging an Ethernet cable from your computer directly into the modem, and see if the results are more stable. If they are, it points to a wireless issue (router or your computer). Or a cabling issue between your router and the modem, or just the wireless distance from your computer to your wifi router.

On TestMy, when I use the Australian server (I'm in the southwest Ohio in the USA), I get 29 Mbps. When I use the New York server, I get about double that at 60 Mbps. My ISP plan is a 50 down and 5 up.

If you want to find out some of the why different tests give such varying results, read all the tabs on this page: https://testmy.net/legit-speed-test.php Believe the results you see here on TestMy. It's hard to say whether changing ISPs will improve your speed without knowing where the bottleneck is. But it sounds like Iprimus has some pretty slow equipment if their service can only guarantee you 1.5 Mbps
-
By plan speed, I meant what did they promise you? Did id you call your ISP yet? if you're wireless, try plugging an Ethernet cable directly into your modem and see what your TestMy speed is.
-
1.5 Mbps sounds awfully slow compared to the 6.51. What does your plan promise?
-
What's your ISP plan speed ?

That's the sad part about virtually all ISPs. If you think you'r not getting your money's worth, you have to build a case using a logical package of info; and be persistent. They may not like hearing you say TestMy's real results show otherwise, but usually after a second or third call, they'll put someone a little more knowledgeable on your problem. if they test your connection and tell you that you're connected with good speed, they'll usually say something like "that's all we're reaponsible for". That's not true. Even though they may be leasing bandwidth on someone else's lines and equipment, they are responsible for ensuring that their customers can use the Internet at the speeds they're advertising, unless their agreement with you says it's only the local connect speed they're promising you - check their fine print.

Read all the tabs here: https://testmy.net/legit-speed-test.php - the results you have posted are not "benchmarks" for Internet performance.

Ever since late April, my speeds have been erratic and trending down. I used to have a solid 50-53 Mbps down, 5.8 Mbps Up on my 50/5 TWC plan. Over the past week or so, page loads would hang, and my TestMy speed tests were all over the place ranging from 20 Mbps to about 40, and each individual download test showed huge variations - sometimes over 100%, and it was erratic regardless of time of day. This morning, I was disconnected from the internet. I looked at the Router (a 10+ yr old wired DI-604 D-Link), and the lights were all very dim; kinda like the Terminator's eyes when it died, just after being crushed. I bough a new wired router for $25 - a TrendNet TW100-S4W1CA. Hooked it up, turned it on, and voila everything worked fine. So much better that my speed right now at noon today are registering a solid 59-60 Mbps. So the message here I guess is that erratic and low speeds can be caused by an intermittent Router. Mine was on it's way out for over two months before it had a hard failure.

Johnc847. Read all the tabs here: https://testmy.net/legit-speed-test.php it's under the Extras menu above. It explains why the other sites always read higher than reality

what do you get for speeds using TestMy.net?

Good speeds on speedtest.net but subpar here
Pgoodwin1 replied to relish's topic in Show off your speed
Technically, I don't know why, but I get consistently about 20% lower down to Miami, and 10% lower to Dallas than the prior Washington DC server. The Dallas connection through TWC's routing has always been a little slower than the DC server was. Lately my test result plots have huge variation in them - much more than a few months ago. I'll probably call them about it. I haven't hit my 50 Mbps plan speed for quite a few weeks now regardless of time of day, when in the past it was always 52-53 to Washington any hour except maybe 5-11PM. They likely won't do anything about it, but if enough people report congestion, they have changed things in the past. update 9/2/16: since this posting, my wired router between my AirPort Extreme and my cable modem failed. It was intermittent (causing erratic results I mentioned above) and finally failed hard. The new Gigabit router sped my whole system up so that both on wireless and on wired Ethernet I'm now at 60 Mbps down, and 5.8 up. My plan is 50/5. Amazing that I'm getting 60 on virtually everything in the house. I see the same on the Speedtest app on my iPad Air 2, but I think that's mostly because that's the limitation of my plan. It used to read about 10-20% higher than TestMy. Another curiosity is that when I used to run Multithreaded tests here to three servers, the speed would always be 50-60% of my tests to individual servers. Now with the new gigabit router, Multithread testing to NY, Dallas, and Miami gives me the full 60 Mbps. -
Go to the blue "Test Servers" link at the top right of the page. London is likely the closest to you. You can choose the Frankfurt server and see if that routing is faster or slower.

That's a good sign. Probably all of the board members are experiencing what you are.

I'm not sure how many internet users are using the ISP you are on, but if they all have as lousy service as you, perhaps a group complaint to the ISP and/or county commissioners might get some action. Are you using a satellite or a line?
