Why are we so stuck on corporate America as a reference. The entire 'online' sector is drastically moving 'mobile' , microsoft knows this , and knows it's completely out of that market, so they are attempting to jump on the 'cloud' bandwagon that so many not in the know seem to think is a good thing. Until they figure out that their logins and data is stored on one or hundreds or more of servers anywhere around the planet. I've been doing a good bit of corporate work over the last several years and I notice one thing, that has continuity through most businesses that are running microsoft on their workstations, they all continue to branch off the old (some very old) NT systems. The data held on these noisy monstrosities is massive, not to mention the legalities involved with the data storage, this explains to me the costs involved in 'upgrading' is more than the companies are willing to spend at the moment. Several of which I speak of could easily drop any dime they wanted while updating infrastructure, so why do they not? When they are well aware failure is immanent. They are waiting for something , which surely is not a dot release of a GUI update. Which is more or less all we have seen in the last 20+ years. My point is the claims that windows rules, might be true, but not for the reasons one might think .

I tried to get you to use Suse. Simply because it's MUCH more advanced in GUI friendly installs of packages (applications) Ubuntu went to the can some time ago, sure it's a solid distro, though about the same as Firefox is been destroyed. Personally I used ubuntu for a minute when it was claiming to be helping lift up those in Africa, I jumped in and started promoting and selling CD's, that lasted about a minute once clowns took over and started leeching from the endeavor. It's about as worthless as tits on a boarhog now.

The issue is not with Linux itself by any means, rather how microsoft has done such a fantastic job of creating a cheap market for users to ring the register in over the years, then conditioning them through GUI treatments, in order to create a mental flow that 'seems' natural. Which in turn makes doing anything different appear incorrect and feel wrong. Much in the same way that right handed writers feel while trying to write a paragraph with their left hand, and the opposite. See, I believe the founders of windows, not the creators but the marketers, knew well that there system could never hold a candle against the linux kernel, so they were great thinkers, instead they created and conditioned a mass market at a time when people were still surprised at not having to get up to change the TV channel. Leaving many millions of users at the whim and wishes of the tight constraints on top of the marketing, not the platform. Which in turn forces users to continue using windows products. Simply due to the above reference, where anything else feels wrong and awkward. So it's not necessarily that Linux is not this or that, it is that microsoft has done to prevent it's users from knowing how things work, not seeing anymore than the GUI, and using the GUI for help, (dumbing down a truly great platform) which creates a necessity and pattern for give me help, instead of how can i fix this or what can i do to make this more of what I want to see. What are you talking about?

You should have no problems running opensuse, though many times there is a bit of work to get the proper video drivers, for the best performance. Linux will use the standard driver to get you up and running, video wise. Use the latest version, after not using it for some time, a couple months ago I grabbed it and was completely shocked at it's completeness. Bar none the best GUI full featured production OS available right now. My opinion of course, but the possibilities are endless with that distro.

Let me make the point about being forced to login to an online microsoft account. After this, everything you do on that machine is logged externally. (best keylogger to date) Therefore the internet is no longer a free and open space, it is tendered to you from your personal data on a 'social' level. Ads, suggested searches, dot to dot connecting you to people with the same lifestyle habit, likes / dislikes ect as yourself. Forming digital opinions of who you are and lumping you with the masses you might regularly even slightly frequent. Taking google to the next level. Anyhow, off topic.

I've read how terrible it is as well, I'm not seeing it. Might be super easy for a select few, though those select few would have to do a LOT of scanning to find one machine to exploit this on, much more work than reward imo.

Blown out of proportion. Executing bash from HTTP headers is common in crappy code, besides invoking sh you can mimick POSIX and grab env's from HTTP headers, so this entire issue is null. Sure, exploitable, in some strange obscure fashion, scary? Not so much.

Just remember install windows first, if installing on stand alone machine (no VM) , unless things have changed, windows does not care what else is on the machine it will overwrite anything. What is this , some competition to see who can release faster versions of the same software with more unneeded social connection built in? Geezus. Between Apple and MS it's become a real joke in recent years. Less concentration on fixing current roadblocks, and more so towards connecting you to the small handful of various widely over rated and more or less useless social networks. Rant over.

May I ask how much RAM and videoRAM this laptop has? Seems like your progressing through distros pretty good, which is normal. You might find openSuse to be something to scout. With it's 'direct install' features, which allows for point and click (for the most part) installs of many packages, or applications in other words. Might also be a good idea to run in terminal sudo apt-get autoremove && apt-get clean After removing items that are system wide.

I use libreOffice on all machines around here, just my opinion. You should familiarize yourself with ubuntus' package manager "Synaptic" Though not sure if libreoffice or openoffice are in the extras repo. If your going to install libreoffice ~ Open a terminal window and type sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa (You'll need root password to get it moving) Unless you run the 'red' terminal or an escalated privileged shell Then type sudo apt-get update If you have not run the updates yet, it'll grab a ton of goodies. Run the Synaptic package manager and locate libreoffice. Should be explanatory from there. Found better instruction on the ubuntu wiki Open a terminal window by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + T key combination Use these commands to add the repository: sudo apt-get install python-software-properties sudo apt-add-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-2 Update the packages list: sudo apt-get update LibreOffice is now available for installation. One may now perform either selective or full LibreOffice installation.

Should you not be calculating off the amperage per hour ?

That 78 bones is a compiled version of total usage yes? And you must be running a lot of equipment to get to that price.

You can always offset your machines energy use by keeping your icebox stocked with gallon jugs of water. Which would obvious keep the tempuratures more stable, and allow the compressor to run less often.

Running even at the lowest setting is great! We need a few folders to come in and get our team rank moving again. Even 10 points per day is fine, perfect actually.

I understand where your coming from. I think it would be a great feature, i might use it myself from time to time. On another note, I rarely fail to mention the RDP security issues, setup a VPN instead. I'm sure you are aware, however it's never a mistake to mention this for others reading this in the future.

You can easily delete any results from the database that you choose. If you look to the right of the field in 'my results' , which is your database, there is a red X. Though I do understand how it might be more simple and quick with your idea.

On test results grey numbers after blue ones?
mudmanc4 replied to sidmontero's topic in HELP! With Tests
Hi sidmontero, The grey numbers represent the same speed as shown in the blue (download) or orange (upload) yet simply in a different readable format. Which you can research the meanings at the following link and convert results to better understand what each represent. -
Another Ubuntu queston about the new upgrade...

If it were me, I would have a backup of images and documents, the good old drag and drop works well. Just grab a USB stick and have at it. After this I might open a sudo terminal and type in ~ apt-get update && apt-get upgrade If it complains (or succeeds) then you can just run~ apt-get dist-upgrade If you don't see the red icon for sudo term then just use a normal user shell (the black one) and type the same as above, just type 'sudo' before the command (no ticks) -
Might be biting off more than I can chew with this question, none the less I care to explore it. Who has the goods on this jazz. I've read a good bit about it, though still torn on specific problematic issues or not. And reasonings for using it at the datacenter. Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
