My thoughts are your on a connection which in many ways , shares the bandwidth , so when people are using there connection you all are allocated a limited amount of bandwidth. QOS or quality of service settings on the host side , will not allow anyone from getting anymore bandwidth at peak usage times. Respectively.

Not knowing which device you have serving the IP's, I'll assume the netgear is the server and the Apple is the forwarder since you stated the Apple is hardwired into the Netgear. Your likely running into IP conflicts. I would try the opposite. Depending on the specific firmware in the netgear your options will vary. You may use ADHOC or repeater. Less complicated way might be turn off DHCP on the netgear ,give netgear an IP thats in the same range as your Apple is set but out of the DHCP range, making sure beforehand the Apple is set to be the DHCP server , make sure the subnet mask range is where the rest of your network is. You could simply turn off routing on the netgear so Apple deals it all out. Make sure on the netgear you are not using the WAN from the Apple , use a LAN port and put nothing in the WAN port.

Hi Bryan , I'm thinking you were looking at an add when it came to the suggestion, generally , you would come to the forum and discuss your issue Can you post what speeds you feel you should be getting ?

Slow DSL, you can insure everything locally is optimized , in the end , distance and line quality have everything to do with speeds. I'm not certain what the device with the red light on it is ,( someone else might ) If this were me , I would make sure the line going to the modem is the first off the incoming port. Then the filter before the phone system ( or between the connection box and the line going to feed the phones ) Making sure to have your personal and account information as I'm sure you already do , before resetting anything, as it could be lost during the rest I would perform. Do you have cat5 line running through the walls in your home ? As I see two lines coming into what appears top be a router / modem , they are close together, in other words it appears as if they are both LAN connections. As you know , both the devices you purchased are routers, is it possible to get an updated modem ? Make sure all the lines from the outside to the modem are in good condition. Use the converter to get you numbers right https://testmy.net/tools/convert.php

Yea I never cared before , most of them are set and forget for the most part, I still use terminal when I have to for them , automating back up has taken that place. If there's injection or who knows I have a very recent backup locally I can check the logs ban the offending ip /set / cidr and re up. I'll take setting a standard / backup user into consideration.

Different test results between Linux & Windows?
mudmanc4 replied to Heeter's topic in General Discussion
Yea ok , explains a little , seems that you might have the same issue as i do with your ISP routing. Test at DC and I'll place a bet the results will differ greatly. -

Are you taking tests specifically to Dallas server ? Or are the tests both DC and Dallas ? I looked at your tests but at this point unless I'm missing something I cannot see the distinction between tests taken on opposite servers. -
Iv'e used lxadmin / kloxo , every time I hear someone talking about that panel I can't help but get that sick feeling, Ligesh felt it important to take his own life over it. He brought us hyperVM and so much more a simple glitch that caused a brief security vulnerability is what sent him over the edge. Sorry to bring up something like this, but I feel his name should go on as without much of his work , the virtual machine would not be as it is , so he should be remembered in a positive way.

You make a great point about using different usernames in a hosting environment. In my situation I generally do all the admin so there's no worries of someone else. I have two others that do everything themselves and they obviously have control from the ground up. I'm not so worried about centos 6 because it's local , I plan to use it for a CVS repo and local family sites. Installed virtualmin on centos 6 last night. Everything so far seems ok , although I prefer sendmail and usermin installs posfix by default. I've installed sendmail via yum , virtualmin will administer sendmail but at this point I haven't got the module to start sendmail.

Welcome to testmy.net forum I will speak to the " convincing the ISP " question , depending on the ISP , the customer service will vary greatly. Many have very qualified knowledgable technicians available, yet as a general rule , when someone calls about a slow connection , or of the likes , you immediately get the as someone recently stated " rolodex run around ". I like that statement because nothing could be more true. A series of standard questions run along side the same series of answers. Simple put , there are so many people that have issues , and the lot of them finally call the number , problem is , a large percentage haven't a clue what they should expect to hear from customer service. The next issue is customer service expects the same general questions , as there plenty aware of the service there providing and the limitations involved. What I mean to say is the ISP knows what the quality of service they will give to there customers , as they themselves are contracting bandwidth , many times smaller ISP's will buy from larger providers. Now everyone would like to sell as many connections as possible , this creates more issues. Getting to the point. Think in other terms when calling your ISP about speed issues. Try and think as if you are selling something to someone, and what the responses you would give , if you knew there really was no better answer to give. Never ask a question (directly) you can ask questions in many ways ) that you don't already know the answer to. Think several questions ahead of the last one you asked , put them into a corner by waiting for them to respond. Do not get upset , do a little homework before calling ( your reading this which means your on the right track already ) Pay close attention to the testmy.net database of ISP's and there results overall. The data stored at testmy.net is compiled over long periods of time and hundreds of ISP's around the world , which makes it a great place to do a little more digging into the past present performance of your ISP in general. Call your ISP ( repeatedly ) and when they ask if you would like to have someone come out and test , always say yes , of course there are those that charge to have a tech come out , and in some instances you are left with no choice if you would like to get results. This does several thing , first and most important , it creates a record of your issues. Second , with that data already in there systems , you can use this further down the road to get to a higher level technician and actually get to the point of the issue. Make sure to test regular , as a member of testmy.net your testing records are stored indefinitely, ( unless of course you decide to delete them ) you can use this information to show the technician your connection averages, if they claim they cannot guarantee speeds outside of there network , this is true in many ways , but in others , they have much more control then they might lead on. After all , most businesses are in it for the money , and the less time they spend on technical calls to a higher paid employee the better. Just always be kind to customer service , it usually gets you further. Educate yourself by reading through others issues in the testmy.net forum, see what solved there issue , find out what there ISP said to them and what the outcome is / was. Asking educated questions and giving educated answers that an entry level customer service might not be well versed on , or is not at there disposal to answer , will likely get your call elevated to a 2nd or even 3rd level tech. Which in turn raises your chances of looking further into the issue and your quest , getting what you are paying for.

It's a routing issue. No , I have no proof that I can show, yet there are strange "things" going on with the USA network infrastructure.

You mentioned this before, I'm getting a new local server together this weekend centos 6 , which I'm not to thrill about using at the moment , none the less I plan on learning enough about mod_security to implement it production. When I first started learning how to use sql and attempting to secure them , the theory was the longer the key the longer it would take the attackers script to calculate and or realize they cracked it. No matter I didnt use dictionary words. It just made sense to me to put different users. Last time I took over a large site that someone else set up , they used crappy DB credentials , along with OScommerce , it was a disaster waiting to happen , and it eventually did. The problem was not just in the directories , I had to hand pick through a 1GB+ database scrubbing up. Took me more then a week mostly 18+ hours each day.
-
Yea I was waiting for someone to say something like that. And no , I never have used anything from the dictionary in name , user or password. More like aHgTf_44Ggf_g885j_B7lj2 crap such as this anyhow for all three. Reading before the snow stopped this past year , sql injection is one of the top security issues.
