Swimmer Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 Hughes Network Systems today announced that it has boosted the speed and performance of its DirecWay satellite broadband service. The company said that "technology advancements in its latest DW7000 modem", which were "previously available only to larger companies" are enabling speeds up to "twice as fast as existing offerings". The upgraded DirecWay residential plans offer speeds up to one megabit per second and start at $59 per month, while small business plans start at $99 per month and offer maximum speeds of up to two megabits per second. offical press release
turner7205 Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 I call bullshit, so what they are trying to say is that only the new Dw7000 can reach those speeds? Well hell I already get those kind of numbers.
Swimmer Posted September 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 not sure what it means.. just posted it cause i saw it this morning.. Dont know if it requires a hardware upgrade? My guess is that it is going to be the starting speed for new customers.. or an upgrade for customers that currently have a cap on their modem maybe.. ghostmaster Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 The current DW6000 users can get those download speeds, however, the real boost comes in on upload speeds, as the DW7000 handles error correction and so forth better. tbaker397 Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 When I had DirecWay, about a year ago with my Dw4000 I would always get 1.2Mbps with boosts up to 1.7. Upload sucked but still, just to make a point
mababer2 Posted September 12, 2005 CID Share Posted September 12, 2005 big deal they increased there speed for home users to 1 mb now they need to fix the FAP problem.no matter how fast they can be if they have a crappy FAP they aint worth crap. lumpy Posted September 13, 2005 CID Share Posted September 13, 2005 I agree. The FAP is just way to small and should be a lot larger for those speeds. Don't take long to use up 169 megs dose it.

FromPlanetBob Posted October 5, 2005 CID Share Posted October 5, 2005 Well, I'll be able to tell you just how fast the professional account is in a couple hours, the installer is outside putting up my new DW7000 system (Professional w/ .98M dish and 2W Transmitter). I'm currently on a DW4000 system.

daygo140 Posted October 20, 2005 CID Share Posted October 20, 2005 Boy I can't wait till tomorrow. Not only because I'm getting cable at 4 MB down and 1 MB up but the satisfaction I will get when I call DWAY and tell them to bite me!!! Even if I had no choice but to keep DWAY the only news that would excite me would be if DWAY killed the FAP BS. I tell yah save your money and just stick with dial-up. DWAY is a rip-off. You pay double and get less than half of the speed of cable and can't stream too long or download too much because of that FAP crap.

bleau101 Posted December 6, 2005 CID Share Posted December 6, 2005 Upgraded recently to the 7000, my up and down speeds are all over down 230-1000+, up are from 30-180. Spoke with level 2 tech, said"your speeds are within dw's specs"
ghostmaster Posted December 7, 2005 CID Share Posted December 7, 2005 If you're on transponder 1350, then that is your problem. Ive seen countless posts about erratic speeds on that frequency. It will take a while for dway to acknowledge the problem and fix it. Maybe next year when Skyterra takes over the brand, things will change as far as that kinda stuff goes. nwjs Posted January 12, 2006 CID Share Posted January 12, 2006 I just got it installed Friday, dn loads at a meg but uploads still under 40. I just upgraded to professional with a DW6000 Monday- Speeds are Down 900-1000 kbps, Up 40-50 kbps. just slightly faster with Windows Firewall off. Not worth the extra $30 Bucks a month. I am new to the forum so forgive me if this is a stupid question...... What is a FAP?
resopalrabotnick Posted January 12, 2006 CID Share Posted January 12, 2006 the fap is one reason why it might be worth it to upgrade to a higher package with dway. the fap is a fair access policy put in place by dway and other sat isps because they do not have the capacity to supply everyone with high speed all the time. so they give you a chunk of a few hundred megs (this is dependant on your package.) that you can download at high speed. if you exceed this chunk in a certain amount of time (iirc 4 or 5 hours with dway) you get slowed down to dialup speed. then after 8 to 24 hours you get assigned another chunk. if you dl say 50 megs of the chunk and then do nothing for a while the chunk refills itself at a rate determined by your package. generally the amount given to you at high speed should be enough for simple surfing at higher than dialup speed, but you need to be careful when download a lot of stuff since that will put you over the chunk and cause you to get slowed down. ghostmaster Posted January 16, 2006 CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 Well, on the Pro plan, you are promised up to 1.0Mbps. You are getting about 1.2. You are getting what you pay for. Try using the 579KB file. You will see speeds like that if you get an initial burst.
