  1. I was reading some on your other posts. Is your router set to deny ping requests? (most likely scenario) BTW - you can give your PC a static IP via your router, but the IP from your ISP will be dynamic (changing occasionally) unless you pay for a static IP address (ie: a business account). The static IP (in either instance) has nothing to do with your speed issues or tracert issues. ( that is unless it is trying to renew the IP every 60 seconds or something ridiculous)
  2. Hey War_Dawg - I have only heard good things about the SA cable modems, if someone has heard anything bad please reply. What model # is it?
  3. Thanks Swimmer - my buddie's router is the WRT54G hardware version 5.0. He was having issues with his PC staying connected and occasional erratic download speeds. It was always good when bypassing the router. We just assumed since he bought the router a couple weeks earlier that there would not be a firmware issue, but that was the whole issue. Updated from 1.00.2 (as it came from the store) to version 1.00.4 and he has had zero problems since. The latest version is 1.00.6 which does not say anything about D/L speed fix, but I found some older literature about the 1.00.4 download speed fix here: http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=452 revolucionario: Are you still having issues?
  4. One recent firmware upgrade for the WRT54G is a fix for download speed issues. Check to see if you have the latest firmware: Linksys Updates Here Choose your model and hardware version from the drop down list. The updated firmware fixed a friends speed issue a couple weeks ago - he bought his router a month ago. Good luck - follow directions closely if you have not flashed a router before.
  5. That is correct. This will give you a good taste of Linux without having to load it to your hard disk. All you do is stick it in your cd drive and re-boot (assuming that your BIOS is set to boot to the cd rom before the hard disk). It is not the full blown SUSE Linux OS, but it is hard to tell the difference. Try Live first, then if you like tinkering with it you can download full versions and load it to a spare PC or set your primary PC up to dual boot.
  6. Hey pitbull - you need to download the live iso and burn that to CD. SUSE Linux Live is the one that is bootable from CD. The other ones you will need to load to a seperate partition and set up your PC for a dual boot set-up.
  7. That is great Dark Matter - It appears to be a funny if you read into the comments. I especially like the 3rd comment: i am guilty (none / 0) (#6095) by Anonymous Reader on Sat Jan 12th, 2002 at 02:12:28 PM PST how could i have been so blind...i have been putting firewall after firewall on my system. when along along i have tryyng to keep myself out... yes now that i have read your article i realize that i am a hacker...I have reviewed my computer and discovered filthy programs running amuck everywhere...Flash. MP3's. DOS. BIOS. and the holy grail of hacking, yes its true I HAVE LINUX, i am so sorry and at this moment the police are on their way to put me away...THANK YOU for opening my unworthy eyes LOL There is another article under the same heading "Internet Idiocy" about how J LO's butt is so big that you could land a helicopter on it. edit: spelling
  8. Also be sure there are no cordless 2.4ghz phones (or any wireless gear) near your PC or access point. Swimmer - I updated a friends WRT54G to the latest firmware(1.00.4, 3 weeks ago), and it helped his speeds. Looks like latest version is 1.00.6. He was also loosing connection before the upgrade. I believe his router was version 5.0.
  9. Nice speeds - Welcome to the forum bearjar
  10. Nice Van - back to the 100mb down again. So what is their upper tier 500mbps/10mbps? (some day soon in Sweden; some far off decade in the US).
  11. Hey Pitbull481, Is Telanav a 3rd party program? A coworker of mine uses his work Nextel phone with some PC software for his laptop that he bought for GPS navigating. He travels with it, not paying for the GPS part at all. I think he said it was Telenav. This would be good, I will post back when I know for sure.
  12. I did not know there were so many repeater options: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=cell+phone+repeater&btnG=Search+Froogle&lmode=unknown Are you looking for your home?

  14. Watch some of those other videos from break.com. There are some good ones, the plane landing at the bottom is pretty good.
  15. Europe....................... :haha: I don't miss the 80's (except for the youth part) - this sorry band sure butchers the crap out of it though....
  16. Hey GIXXERGUY - do you have the latest firmware installed on that router? A friend's WRT54G kept loosing connectivity daily until Tuesday when we upgraded to the latest firmware. So far, he has had zero problems. just a thought- Good luck with the ACL.....
  17. Hey Nipponicchizer0, just make sure it stamped with "5-1000MHz" or be sure it is rated for at least those frequencies. This will cover any regular cable modem.
  18. Time for more idiot lights, now you need a low oil light on the front of your case :haha: Guaranteed the wife would keep on surfing till the processor blows even after the light comes on. lol
  19. I knew it was the aliens listening to us!!! 5.8GHz should be just fine. Are you going to try to move them apart before you go buy a new phone? I don't want to be responsible for you wasting your money when the phones weren't the problem and then I gotta look over my shoulder for the rest of my always worried you are going to sneak up on me and nail me over the head with an old 2.4GHz phone....oh man......
  20. Well? Also, you don't need to be on the phone for it to interfere with it, they are always doing something.
  21. Be sure you don't have any 2.4GHZ phones or any other 2.4GHZ devices nearby. I had to drive 180 miles to my parents a while back just to move their cordless phone away from their laptop. (Oh, and to visit them also) Good luck - Also look into Windows Wireless Zero problem (Google it also): http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14903475?hilite=zero
  22. Anytime. Let us know if you get it resolved. Come back here if you still have issues; There are other members that know a heck of alot more about the IP networking than I do - I am an RF guy.
  23. I am looking at my Win2000 machine that I use for FTP; and have experimented with a home based web-site. It looks like I can just add another web to it, and bind it to the old one. So, should be simple. Did you register a domain name or do you just type in the IP address when connecting to your site? Either way, you will probably have to use the IP address and port from work (ex: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080) to connect.
  24. I am wondering if the ISP is blocking traffic on port 80 within their local network, but allowing outbound web traffic. That very well could be them blocking this. How about creating a second connection from home using a different port like 8080 instead of 80. (actually both 80 and 8080 and maybe you could connect thru 8080 from work) and tie both ports to your site. Web site gurus: is it easy enough to do? I have only messed with a Win2000 machine and a personal web site, so not a lot of experience.
  25. That would be interest to go to the show, but family vacations take priority and I don't think I could talk them into a tech show in Vegas. Hope you have a good time.....
