i have seen a dl from ms max a 10 meg line. so compared to a 5 meg i could dl vista beta in half the time...

my advice on that is download a suse distribution. they have a nice automated installer that sets up all that stuff.

i'm testing way under a 1000 kilobit per sec right now but if i start a download from microsoft it pulls it in at a steady 445 KB/sec. so right at the cap of my modem. same thing with www.pandora.com the web can be at the hellish slow onelink speeds and that thing buffers its audio at full throttle.

install a windows xp thing and make a bonfire in the back and scorch the linux cds. if you're feeling masochistic and want to install linux at all costs you're gonna need a windowmanager thingy or better the gnome or kde desktop widgets.

as long as your temps don't go up like your cpu's when you get active i don't see a problem there.

so why exactly are you bashing it? envious because you only have 12 and can't stand anyone having a faster link than you? if that were the case i would be bashing 90 percent of the people here for having a faster link than me. let others be happy with their faster link and if you absolutely can't stand it talk to your therapist and ask him if moving to a city where you can get fios would help you. or ask van buren if he needs someone to take over his apartment when he moves next year. he's got 100 down. that should do it for you.

you can't decrease or even eliminate the noise that such a system creates. the simple fact that the lines used to carry the signal would be completely unshielded, unpaired and never intended for such a use would mean that the high frequency signal gets transmitted like from a radio antenna. this does not even include the problems that can be caused to equipment like washers, dishwashers and other appliances that would not like all the high freq noise coming in with their AC.

first of all, some servers will hand that out. second of all, who says it all has to come from the same source? download stuff off microsoft while getting updates vor the virus and malware scanners while streaming tunes and or video etc. not to mention several comps in the house dling stuff simultaneously.

hm. if the coffeshop made it a condition in their terms of use that a wireless user had to buy something then ok. if they failed to do so and simply provided free access, no case. and i wonder if the coffeeshops isp will be looking at their contract. what if it turns out that the shop had a residential cable or dsl hookup with the according terms of use...

seeing as the isp didn't try to pass the ball back to you but instead said they would look into it it sounds like they know they have some sort of issue. call them again, stay nice, and inquire as to what is going on with your speed.

roco, once you get the fire hot enough you can "recycle" old LiIon and NiMH batteries with your engine. and it should make it go nicely. but i wouldn't breathe the smoke...

interesting, maybe. but you can't beat the laws of physics. and physics says: run a signal like that over a single unshielded conductor at those power levels and you end up with one mother of a transmitter that blankets anything in its freq spectrum. and that is /not/ a good thing.

from what i gather it's the battery pack that catches fire and or explodes setting the rest of the thiong on fire. you can set it on asbestos and the laptop will still burn.

up and down work on different frequency ranges. so one may be garbled while the other is ok. or the interference may not be as bad. or the modem may be more sensitive to noise than the dsl access multiplexer in the co. if the dslam can read the slightly noisy signal from the modem it doesn't mean that the much cheaper modem can read the slightly noisy signal from the dslam.
