Help with speeds please!
resopalrabotnick replied to asubaseball727's topic in XFINITY (Comcast Cable Communications)
i looked online if i could find any documentation on the modem, didn't find it at 3com. do you have a manual? -
.26 million subs with .3 percent market share sounds about right for dway. that's 5200 subscribers per state.
-
no, i think that is sadly the state of a large part of the younger generations. the amount of stupidity out there is astonishing. i paid something with a ten dollar bill at a supermarket. the kid at the register typed in twenty bucks. at least he noticed, oh you gave me a ten. he then gets out a calculator to figure out he ows me 5.32 in change instead of 15.32. fucking amazing.
-
aol has 20.1 million members. half of them use it, the other half can't get rid of the subscription.
-
i could have just put the link to compfused, but that site gets real slow at peak times.
-
true didn't consider that. i'll take it down and post your link. (to be honest it didn't cross my mind since everyone uses tons of bandwidth with the test anyhow....
-
if you are sensitive as to your religious beliefs, don't watch this. edit. use this link instead. [snip] edit: unnecessary

actually, if his rwin was low enough and his connection fast enough to get the high score, then increasing the rwin appropriately can effect that change. i had a win98 machine that went from 750k to 3.5m simply by increasing the rwin. (because the default rwin on 98 is tiny)

they wait until enough people have 10 or 20 gigs stored there, then they bill them. or they go through all the files people deposit there and steal personal info. think of it as a long term investment.
-
well, on the bright side, you are running at 75 percent of clock speed. lose the fan and enjoy the silence.
-
you mean password protected? you can google for the manufacturer of the bios and possibly the board type and you should be able to find the skeleton password for it.
-
i can see it now. you have all your important stuff backed up there. your hd goes tits up. you go to dl all the stuff you backed up online only to realize that they have pulled the plug because the porn ads werent paying for all that space....

Help me speed my dsl connection(Im only at like 8%)
resopalrabotnick replied to yum114's topic in Make it Faster...
seeing how the dl is much slower than the ul it seems like a problem with sbc's dsl. since if for some reason your connection was slow due to a problem on your end you wouldnt be getting the ul... your advertised speed is what package you pay for. look at the bill, see what it says, and if necessary look up on their site what package costs the amount you pay. -
read the 2 links in my sig. for cablenut to work you need to select the correct sttings.

and come christmas there will be a bazillion new honeypots on the net. sigh. kind of makes me glad i donm't have to deal with the service calls...

yeah. 1. anytthing involving sats is not realtime. unless you are talking about using an iridium satphone for internet. possible, pretty decent speeds (64k) pings are better than dway since the iridium sats are in a (iirc) 350 mile or so orbit and you don't need a dish. the problem is the price of a few bucks a minute...

the firewall being the software and winxp firewall or the firewall of the router? is that test with or without the router? am i losing my mind? and sorry, i can't think of a reason why the first hops would time out and the rest be decent. just like the one tracert you posted with everything but the last hop timed out. -

How much power supply watts are neccesary?
resopalrabotnick replied to amc11890's topic in General Discussion
do a 450 or 500 one. or more. slightly bigger isn't that much more, and you can upgrade your system without having to swap the psu. if you really want to be sure go to the manufacturer websites for all the components and look up the specs and see how much they use. that will also tell you how much heat they put out, so you can plan the cooling appropriately. -
How much power supply watts are neccesary?
resopalrabotnick replied to amc11890's topic in General Discussion
the processor is not the major problem nowadays. the main problem is the graphics card, the newest ones come in at 200 watts. cd/dvd ® drives are fairly tame, hdds can suck some juice. if buiding a new box i would go for 450 or 500 to be on the safe side. if using one of those monster graphics cards i would look into a case with dual psus. -
Horrible Dway speeds in the afternoon!! Any ideas???
resopalrabotnick replied to dman58's topic in DW6000 Information
sometimes i wonder. all those dway users complaining of bad speeds. if you live fairly far out, where no cable/dsl will reach, can you get a t1 or multiple t1 hookup? then you pool with a few neighbors, get one place hooked up, rent a ditchwitch and lay some cat6 to the neighbors and share a connection that is superior to sat in terms of speed stability and pings. and seeing as you pay around a hundred bucks a month for sat, a t1 at 350 would be not much more if shared among 3 people. with pings that allow online gaming etc... just my US$ 0.02 worth. -
ADSL Monopoly of TELMEX
resopalrabotnick replied to Milo.ant's topic in Central/South American Providers
the good, the bad and the ugly. but look at it from this end. if the mexican governmaent hadn't promised telmex a monopoly on high speed connections they might not have made the investment fearing foreign competition with more funding/experience behind it. i am sure that before they started setting up dsl those that really wanted or needed high speed internet would get a t1 or bigger. with dsl they are in fact damaging that market to some extent. i have set up dsl and i know that the initial investment to get dsl set up in a telco switch is quite large. now dsl is available, they are probably working on spreading it out as far as technically possible and the situation is turning somewhat sour because they have no competitor, know that in all likelyhood they will not have one for quite some time and are settling down to recoup their initial investment. a monopoly sucks, but in some situations you need one to get a technology deployed at all. -

but seriously. what model modem and router do you have. for some reason it looks like the modem isn't answering pings, which sounds like bad manners, but the router should. unless the modem is a model with some router functionality that is in stealth mode? -

usually linux flavors don't do to well with power management. not on a desktop and not on a laptop.
