  1. When I VPN my speed is always degraded, you're complicating the route... it slows things down by nature. Is the VPN faster, slower or the same. You said that they didn't drop off with Bell... but your Bell connection was also slower. It might drop off more steeply now but is the actual speed about the same? The VPN service may have limitations. I've seen many drop my speed from well over 100 Mbps to 5-10 Mbps or less. VyperVPN by Goldenfrog (a Giganews partner company, which is also the best usenet service IMO) has a fast service. It's the VPN I personally use. But I'd never leave it on all the time. If you want the best possible speed you should only connect VPNs when you really need them.
  2. iMacs last. Great investment for serious computer users. ... they pay for themselves in longevity and productivity, multiple times over. Same can be said about a well built PC, with the right software setup. ... what's this..... .... ... DUDE! I just noticed your stuff on youtube. You're really good! I especially like "Not My Cross To Bear" from 1973. Wow. Very, very cool.
  3. Mine is from April 2011. We're both due. But really... let's be honest... we could get by with what we have for years more and still be happy.
  4. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. There's a verification process, to make sure that people can only delete their own results. There was an issue in that process. It's fixed now, thanks again! Wasn't giving me the same error because I have special privileges. -D

    Hi,

Welcome to TestMy.net! You have pretty decent speed https://testmy.net/compID/65546568566 -- what is your package speed with BHN?
  6. The guy on the phone probably didn't know TMN but Rogers knows me. I'd bet you money that if you dug deep enough (in these forums and elsewhere) you'd find many instances where their customers say that they were referred by customer service or techs from Rogers. TMN has run millions of tests JUST on Rogers customers over the years, in the beginning my number one referrals were from call center and field techs. ... convenient that they don't know who I am after they get their own test that makes them look better. This is the case across the board Johnster. With 99% of all ISPs leaning customers towards their own tests now. I'm hearing of instances where techs and customer service reps are going against the handbook so hopefully the tides are changing. It's better for consumers to know the truth. It's very common for people to see huge differences like that. It IS affecting your overall experience and speed. You may be able to get 150 Mbps under certain IDEAL circumstances but if you can't do it here... then you're not really doing it. (IMHO) First thing, if you want... search these forums for TCP Optimizer (search box at the top of the page). You'll be returned with page after page of results. Many of which are from people in the same boat as you. "Why is my speed faster elsewhere" is pretty much the theme. That search term finds all of those because it's commonly mentioned in threads where people see discrepancy ... and often works. If you're on Windows (7 and older) I recommend trying TCP Optimizer, you'll see improvement instantly in many cases. I see "Windows NT 6.1" detected in your results, so you're on Windows 7. ... lol, just thought about it... even with version numbers, MS makes things more difficult than they need to be. TMN has more than one dimension. So far you've only tested one way. The default is default for a reason, it's a great test but if you want to fully understand your connection you need to test it other ways too. You can select mirrors, multithread speed test and Mercury (test to anywhere). Let me know after you've tested some other ways and applied optimized TCP settings... and retested. I'll pull your results up again and let you know what I think. Another thing to try. Test wired to your modem directly if possible. Those results will represent the baseline and should be the fastest and most stable numbers you get from TMN. Then you can test wifi and networking equipment beyond the modem knowing that drops in their performance are not a reflection on your provider. (One of the many reasons I'll never buy a combo modem/router.) Note: Plug the modem into your computer with ethernet, unplug the modem for 10 seconds and plug it back in. This ensures that it reboots with the computers mac address. Repeat the process when you connect back to the router.
  7. I'm hoping that they're talking about a new iMac. I've been dreaming about a retina iMac for years. Apple expected to hold iPad & Retina iMac event on Oct. 16 - appleinsider.com [test appleinsider.com] - Updated 10/14 Apple to debut 27" Retina iMac at Oct. 16 event Gird your wallet: Apple reportedly has a Retina iMac ready to launch - macworld.com [test macworld's CDN] 'It's been way too long': What could it mean? - techtimes.com [test techtimes.com] The new 27-inch iMac is getting a 5120×2800 Retina display - extremetech.com [test extremetech.com] New iPads? Retina iMac? What to expect at Apple’s event tomorrow - arstechnica.com [test arstechnica.com] I really hope to also see the 14nm Broadwell processors but according to much that I read it may be a year off. Some make it sound possible. All I know is that those chips are pretty amazing, only like 4.5 watts ... doesn't need fans or even heatsinks. If they put that in the new iMac it will be insanely thin. If it has 5k+ resolution... Apple won't be able to take my money fast enough.
  8. Wow, I had no idea. For the longest time Chrome worked best for me... but over the past year or so I've been having issues. The latest... a memory leak (or something) ... every so often on my iMac I'll see little square character looking artifacts around the screen. All blinking at the same rate, very faint... very odd. I run through and start closing programs to find what the cause is... get to chrome, close it and BAM, problem solved. I tax my other browsers just as hard and have never seen the odd behavior that chrome displays. (not just the artifacts... there's much more to it... it doesn't feel right lately) chrome used to handle everything for me but lately it's shown signs of weakness. I have faith that the developers will make it work better. That's a pretty major difference between your chrome and firefox. Guess you know which browser you should use now. -- from what I've seen firefox has always been a consistent performer, across all platforms.
  9. Took me a while to get to it... but you can now mass delete. Select check boxes next to the result or select all at the top. Execute with the delete button at the top. This is something I just added quickly. Later, I'll make a small floating options list pop up that will have organize and delete options when you check boxes. For now... this is WAY better than the previous one... at... a... time... delete.
  10. Sorry I never noticed this thread. There is already user agent info in the details. Click the test ID in the details for those details. Let's compare some user agent strings... Here's my iMac Safari - User Agent Detected: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9_5) AppleWebKit/600.1.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.1 Safari/537.85.10 Chrome - User Agent Detected: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9_5) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/37.0.2062.124 Safari/537.36 Firefox - User Agent Detected: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.9; rv:32.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/32.0 And iPhone Safari - User Agent Detected: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 8_0_2 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/600.1.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/8.0 Mobile/12A405 Safari/600.1.4 Chrome - User Agent Detected: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 8_0_2 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/600.1.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) CriOS/38.0.2125.59 Mobile/12A405 Safari/600.1.4 All the information you requested is already there. 11. Just to clarify, I don't like this... I like that you reported it. k

  13. Sorry about that. First it was trying to connect to the old server... then the username was missing on the new server... then it had so many failed attempts it locked out all the mirrors. Everything should be working normally now. In the transfer I forgot about that reference to the IP... also forgot that it has a special username. Oops. Only able to notice once I turned off the other server. Even then, it only happened if you had selected express. I didn't see the error myself at first because I wasn't selecting express.
  14. I just upgraded the home server, I forgot about the reference to the old IP on the mirrors. I'm trying to understand why it wasn't throwing an error for everyone, it should have. I was able to test normal on all mirrors. It's twisting my brain into knots because it should have given everyone that error. AHHH! I'll have to look deeper. At any rate, it's fixed. Thank you for the report and sorry for the inconvenience.
  15. maybe you can only get those speeds multithread. The upload test here is single thread. It also considers from start to finish. Most other tests ommit portions of the result.
  16. Not true, my AC wifi has acted up a few times. I'll join the N wifi on the same router and my speed will be MUCH faster. Something probably interfering with with 5 GHz and not 2.4 GHz. Interference affects all wifi, AC is no exception. I run a quick download test, switch from AC to N and retest the same size. There's usually a difference in favor of AC but I've seen it the other way around. When AC was running slow it was 1-2 Mbps vs 80+ Mbps (n - laptop never moved)... vs 100+ Mbps wired. I changed channels on the router a while back and I haven't had issues since. Whenever possible you should test wired to the router or modem to establish an ideal baseline. Then compare those numbers to your wifi. Might surprise you.

It will just feel right. Just for reference... Linux Mint [download] Ubuntu [download] see Linux Foundation Desktop Distro Listing for more flavors Let us know what you decide to go with.
  19. Yeah, looks like you've been testing. Sorry I'm late with a response.
  20. The Verizon FIOS speed test log show the recent results for other FIOS clients. There are logs and listing for all members, providers, cities and countries to help you compare. DNS would only affect the results if there were a long lookup at the start of the test. I'd bet that this would be more noticeable on the multithread test if you selected a wide array of servers. Because it will query for each server. I'm with EB on this one. Google's DNS works great. I've been using it for years and never have DNS issues.
  21. Can you point me to some good articles that have evidence of ISPs throttling VoIP traffic?
  22. Me too! This is on the list and will be added. I should be revisiting that section soon.

How's mint running? Last time I installed it I thought it was pretty nice. Nice snappy linux feel. Here's the last thing I moved... cp -R -p /var/lib/mysql /home/mysql broken down copy -Recursive (go within all folders and within their folders too) -parents (remove DIRECTORY and its ancestors; e.g., `rmdir -p a/b/c' is similar to `rmdir a/b/c a/b a') /source/dir/var /destination/dir/var If you're trying to delete the files use rm -Rf (recursive & force makes it get everything and have no 'remove?' prompt) or rmdir sudo mv -v ~/Downloads/jre1.7.0_67/* /opt/java/32 -Rf might work too...
