Closest back to back / Most consistent speed

wow! Can't wait till I can get something like that at my house. Hurry up progress! -
I seem to have disappeared from the member rank list :/
CA3LE replied to FoolsGambit's topic in General Discussion
Glad you're finally posting! I don't rank most of the time either because I usually only test my download speed. You need to upload test more often. That tool only considers the last 2.5 million results. If you don't have an upload result recently you won't rank, the more popular the site gets the shorter the considered time period. Next version I'll be revisiting the ranking system. Do one upload test and I bet you that you'll hit the top members list... 5th or 6th place. --- you have to keep testing to stay there. -
Why Do My Results Differ From Speedtest.net / Ookla Speed Tests?
CA3LE replied to CA3LE's topic in General Discussion
Have you tried TCP Optimizer? I think it may help in your situation. You're running "Windows NT 6.0" so that's vista or server 2008. TCP optimization is especially helpful (necessary even) for older version of windows. When I ran windows prior to windows 8.1 the first thing I did with a fresh windows install was optimize TCP and MTU. Without this optimization your normal downloads will suffer as well as your classic linear download test results. Results from other speed tests will often show much faster speed... they're misleading you. Other tests want to give you the best chance possible to score high... TMN on the other hand wants to help you ACTUALLY score as high as possible. The truth hurts sometimes, it helps all the time. You may have an older computer with other limitations or issues so it may or may not help. It can't hurt to try. Remember... TestMy.net is a full, unbiased picture. Results can be harsh, but it's the truth. For people that can't pull decent speed here I say... As long as the provider and equipment are delivering I'm able to max out every connection I touch. So should you. I'm not doing anything special here... great provider, great networking, great computer... doesn't matter if I'm in OS X, Linux or win 8.1 -- Firefox, Safari, Chrome, IE -- all the same, I run all default settings and consistently test this fast. If you can raise your score on TMN you're Internet (and computer as a whole) will be noticeably faster. period. I wish everyone around the world could experience a minimum of my connection speed. The world will change greatly when 100 Mbps is considered as slow as dial-up is today. -
This was being offered up until about 6 months ago. You were able to setup a mirror that worked just like TMN's own servers. Totally free for you and your clients, using your own servers resources. I took it down to rebuild it better than ever. Took too much of my time setting up servers, I need to build myself out of the process. I'll make sure to contact you when it's ready.

Sorry I didn't follow up on it with you. But I did keep it in mind and shortly after you posted this topic I opened up wget (which I was purposely blocking). It can be hard for me to update every topic and reply to every email I get. I try but if I spent too much time getting back with people... I wouldn't have time to do everything else. Sometimes I lose track of topics but I never forget your suggestions.
-
You act like I owe you something. Sorry that I've focused on building something everyone can use instead of a command line test that only techies can use. Did you forget that I'm one person over here? Programming aside I have 10 other full time jobs that I do to run this site. Any one of those areas could consume all of my time if I allowed it to. I have to prioritize my time, CLI tests are not a high priority. I can think of 100 things I could work on that would be beneficial to more people. It's great for you to come back and remind me but the way you've done it is rude. Bro, I work CONSTANTLY, even when my fingers are off the keys. If I could get an extra 100 hours a day it wouldn't be enough to do all that I want. Besides, you can wget /dl-(1-200)MB from any of the servers. Not a real CLI test but it does work for testing download speed.
-
You very well may be right. Just make sure it's not actually within your own network. Sometimes people will forget about their roommate or neighbor that they've given wifi access to... someone who's eating up all the bandwidth when they get home. Same regularity as on-peak off-peak congestion. If you're certain that there is no other activity within your network during those tests... yes, you're right in thinking that there's nothing you can do. Besides complain. It's pretty much out of your hands. If it continues too long after you complain... you can help them alleviate their over capacity issues by finding a new provider.

Is there any API is provided for hosting it on a server locally?
CA3LE replied to vbadri77's topic in New Members
Sorry, I didn't read the title before. Used to offer local installs but stopped about 6 months ago to focus on a new version. Too many requests and the old way took up too much of my time. I will offer ways for you to use TMN within your websites and apps... it will just take time. -
Is there any API is provided for hosting it on a server locally?
CA3LE replied to vbadri77's topic in New Members
You can do that without an API. Just visit TestMy.net in you browser on any device. Works on anything with a web browser. -
That's on your smart TV, right? Typically when we see results like that on a computer we suggest TCP Optimizer. Optimizing the TCP and MTU settings will often bring the single thread score up to the multithread result level. You may not be able to change these settings on your TV, I would almost bet that you wouldn't be able to. Sometimes if the drive performance is lacking single thread tests here will suffer. Here's results from a Macbook. The first 9 results were taken with a failing mechanical HDD. The last 4 stable results were taken after the HDD was swapped for a SSD. In hindsight I should have done some multithread tests to show you that multithread is usually unaffected in this scenario. But I didn't know I'd be sharing the results at the time... I just wanted to quickly fix my friends laptop. I could tell just by how the first few tests felt while they ran that it was the hard drive holding it back, plus I had already diagnosed it with multithread test comparison a month prior. Did a swap for SSD, rebooted and instantly 90 Mbps ... over and over again. Everything ran better by the way... I just tested it through the Internet and TMN. ... Note: if I only had 15 Mbps Internet I wouldn't have been able to see the issue. It's only at extreme speed that you can start using TMN for purposes beyond what I originally intended it to be used for. It's not always the Internet connection and ISPs fault. Hardware can hold you back too. TestMy.net is not just a bandwidth test... it started as a bandwidth test but at higher speeds we've found it does much more. Those results (from a TV on your connection type) look good to me. That's a comfortable speed to surf at. It would be better if both types tested at 35+ but I wouldn't get too hung up on it either. That's not a bad performance. It may be held back by the speed of the TV's memory... why things like that only affect my classic test, I don't know.. they just do. But now, when you get your next tv... you'll know how to benchmark the difference.
-
I'll keep this suggestion in mind when I dig into the next version. -- this would add a lot of value.

if the issue doesn't come back let us know, it may help others with the same problem.

In its simplest form you can share your basic stats by clicking "Results" in the main menu, then copy the url from the address bar. Your results, while you're signed in are saved to https://testmy.net/quickstats/guyhoghton - all results including tests taken when you weren't signed in can be found under https://testmy.net/compID/735736523613 but it changes when your IP changes so saving by username, like you're doing now, is best. Below the graph you'll see share links... but you must have flash installed. If they won't work for you they won't be there. Eventually I'll rewrite this to work for everyone. The advantage of those links is that when you modify the query it modifies the links to match. Make it look how you want... click "Share This Query" and https://testmy.net/stats/?&t=u&d=12312014&x=5&l=1000&q=guyhoghtoncopies to clipboard. guyhoghton 12/31/2014 5 days 1k results graphed If you don't have copy to clipboard available look closely at the url, modify the variables to suit your needs. There are many ways you can control TMN with url parameters, watch your address bar as you use the site for clues. Personally, I wouldn't send CSV either. I'd link them the results like I just discussed. This way they can see the results and details how you do, they're validated and the techs can query the results any way they'd like on their end to get a better idea of what's happening. It looks to me like you've gathered enough data to illustrate a point. As long as you're certain that there isn't someone using up part of your bandwidth within your network during those hours... you may be dealing with network congestion. I'd run another auto test, download only... your upload doesn't seem to be the real issue here. This time do a couple things differently. First, enable multithread, then auto test (download only / every 15 minutes / minimum 3 MB) Run it 100 times to get a little over 24 hours. Let me know when that's done and I can help you make a separate query to illustrate those results too.

Yes, turn the modem's wifi off. I'd use the ASUS RT-N53 as the router for everything. (the ASUS is dual band) Test directly off the modem's ethernet to see what you're getting before the router is introduced. Then introduce the router. If you're only having issues with the router try resetting it and updating its firmware.

Inconsistent speed from pre-wired home
CA3LE replied to Travis Lamoureaux's topic in Networking and Hardware
Ugly doesn't affect anything. To me, that looks beautiful. Looks like you have wiring I'd generally trust... but looks can be deceiving, especially in pictures. There is a lot that those pictures can't tell. You know you're good at the 8ft feed from the dmark, right? Plug that into your router and then test directly off the router with a ~6ft cat5 patch. Use your Asus RT-N56U. Test a few times to make sure it's consistent. Let us know the results. Looking deeper I'd open the wall plates and inspect the outlets... and inspect the plugs going into the router. The person who made them may not have done a very good job. Take macro shots if you can and post them here. -
WELCOME TO TESTMY.NET! (caps lock much?) just messing' with you. I don't see the attachment you talked about. Here's something else that may help visually. arooschwald speed test results See more for that specific connection, including tests taken when not-signed in by clicking on the CONNECTID in the results. 1835096625522 test results Hi Andreas, I'm afraid that in your situation there may be little that you can do. You have no physical control over the hardware and don't even know where the router is to try and get closer, right? Could be that you're too far from the router... could be that they're overloading the connection that they have. You're getting bursts of useable speed, but then almost nothing at all. Y7u3PjJ Are you only testing in your room? Try roaming around the resort a little on your android. Maybe you just get terrible speeds in your room... or your floor. If a test is taking too long, cancel it and move on. Sometimes, as you walk and a test is running you can actually see the progress speed up as you get into better areas. Test with a minimum of 1.5 MB. Manually select the size on the download test page. 1.5 MB and larger tests have more details (e.g. the screenshot above). Those extra details really help us understand what's going on during the test. Some of your slower, auto sized tests will be below the 1.5 MB threshold... so manually selecting helps in your situation. Direct link, starts at 1.5 and auto sizes if needed >> 1.5 MB Speed Test. Besides physically changing locations I doubt that you'll be able to improve the situation. You're at the mercy of the resorts wifi. Your room may be on the edge of the range... or again, they may be overloading capacity. It's not uncommon for an resorts, hotels and motels to run off < 1/10 of what they should. They don't have access to the cheap, fast residential connections that we have in our homes... they get bent over and pay MUCH more for MUCH less. In turn, they often order inadequate service. If overloaded capacity is the case, you should see further degradation during hours when most people are in their rooms and relief when the majority is out and about. It will fluctuate with regularity, the same times every day. A definite pattern that you can bet on it with certainty. Results from the auto test can help establish if there's a pattern.

Inconsistent speed from pre-wired home
CA3LE replied to Travis Lamoureaux's topic in Networking and Hardware
Well isn't that frustrating... Welcome to TestMy.net. By the way, you have a beautiful family. Looks like a pictures you get with a new picture frame. So, to your knowledge the wiring that's coming off the side of the house is direct to those outlets? Can you take a picture of the Dmark for us? I feel that if it was just wiring it would be rare for it to affect all the outlets. Think of this, if your Dmark is the actual point where the connection splits off, how would all of the cables be affected equally? One great explanation would be if all of those cables left the Dmark, traveled up into your attic and then off to the respective locations... I've found on many occasions where critters use the cables to sharpen their teeth. They'll strip the cables bare and leave the copper behind. Often these cables will still function at degraded rates. If I was confident that the speed was right at the side of the house... and that it indeed split off right there. I'd pop up in the attic and go right to the area where all of the cables are still together. (this is where they still have something in common that would explain why ALL of them are bad) ... it may be that you have an animal in your attic chewing your cables OR it could be that the cables have been pulled around a beam to the point that they can only pass degraded signal. You don't have to be a communications expert to trace back the cable. Feel it along the way and look for any imperfections. Take pictures of anything that doesn't look perfect, post them here and we'll let you know what we think. Pay special attention to areas where the cable comes in and out of drilled holes and anywhere it comes in contact with anything. Also take note if the cable is near any electrical wiring... if it is and if it's possible move the cables away from any electrical wiring. They radiate energy. Sometimes installers will lazily drop communications lines down the same hole for the electrical outlet. They don't want to pull out their drill and end up making the next guy do twice as much work. Those shouldn't be next to each other and if they are those outlets may need to be redone. So, if it's not a complete pain in the back and you can trace one of the lines back to the wall it drops down into take note if it's a lonely cable or has 'friends'. Again, look for kinking and damage as this is a major point of contact. (but odds are, if all outlets are affected the problem is back further. Where they all share something in common.) Let us know what you find. -
Hi Steve, Welcome! First thing, run some more tests on your Mac. When I had Cox 150, I got a max of 125 Mbps... more often 80-90. Test on your best computer. Test wired directly to the router and also directly to the modem. Those tests should provide the best results. Then use those results as a benchmark to judge how well your wifi and other devices are working.

So you have Endeavor Communications, Endeavor E-FORCE. I'm guessing 15/3 ... and if it's not then your problem is worse than I thought. (or they're really delivering on that 6 Mbps package, lol) So when you're performing right, it's pretty nice. But those dips hurt. How often is this happening and how long does it last? I do see a pattern in there. Your worst results are between ~25 and ~45 minutes past the hour. Try an hour long test first. auto speed test, download / express off / every 5 minutes / 12 times. If you see a specific time that your speed drops, start the next test (below) during that time frame so that you can see if it's happening every hour. Run a longer auto speed test, download / express off / every hour / 24 times. When the speed drops that heavily I start looking into the possibility of another computer on my network doing something that's eating up all the bandwidth. Maybe someone in your house is torrenting or maybe your wifi isn't secure and a neighbor is leeching your bandwidth. You'd be surprised how often that's the case. When it happens with perfect regularity I start looking into automatic scheduled tasks I may have across all the computers within my network. A large backup sync that happens at the same time every day for instance may choke your bandwidth. Run that scheduled test, it will help us understand better. If it's happening only during a certain time of day it could be congestion in your area. If it's happening very frequently where your speed is constantly up and down it may be your equipment. There are so many possibilities but we'll try to help you nail down the problem.

It's taking your underscore and making it a space... The program that ranks ISPs is the same as the one that ranks members. For ISPs I want to strip unwanted characters and capitalize letters. I didn't realize that it was manipulating the usernames like that. I went in and fixed it real fast. On your results your username was also being capitalized (you can't see this yourself because for you it says "My Results"). I fixed that too. People's usernames should be displayed how they typed them. As EBrown said, ranking and stats go by your username not display name. Display name is mostly for the forum. ... however in your case your display name and username are the same so you'd be looking for spudler_t either way.

Xfinity So called Speed Tier Doubling Speeds?
CA3LE replied to spudler_t's topic in XFINITY (Comcast Cable Communications)
Yeah, it's BS. They have control over where they display those ads... like ultimate control. Can't say that it was just advertised over a wide area, they can pinpoint neighborhoods within their network. Yet they show ads saying, 'we're already doing this in your area!'. I see the ads and also don't see double speed in my area. But I regularly see speeds above my package speed so I'm not complaining either. In my area nothing else can compare to Comcast, I'd have to get 6 CenturyLink connections to do the same thing. So in my opinion, no rush. I'd rather they wait till they comfortably have capacity and deliver on their claims than rush it. -
Do you have similar results on your computers / other devices too?
-
That's to tell you the server you're testing against. You're in Russia and the test server is in Great Britain.
