I have now noticed when that happens my little network icons in the lower right corner of my screen go off and on several times while uploading when my speeds drop. I'm guessing my connection is stopping when the lights go out but hard to watch the modem at the same time to see what's going on there. Anyone have any ideas about this?

We need to know more about what equipment your using. I have a DW7000 and a almost 6 year ODU. From what I have read xplornet uses Hughes or WildBlue and it seems that the WB uses the small service packages only. Check out this page to see the different modems.http://www.xplornet.com/whatis/satellite-tech.asp?lang=EN Tell us what your using (between the Mac and the sky) and any information about your system other than your Mac. We'll be waiting

welcome jjb, Maybe this will help explain since you don't think it's at your end. I believe more and more people are using satellite than anytime before now, today. These companies don't stop signing up people since they are trying to make money. Now what usually happens is you start service and then more and more people sign up and thus more traffic, just like on the highway a slowdown. Thats my theory, I have noticeable slowdowns at times but I us a higher plan to compensate, sometimes. Do your speeds go back up at all? If you speed stays steadily lower Xplornet may have choked it down. Also different transponders have different types of users.

That's a cute hello. I was thinking about the battery idea. I guess they last a fair amount of time and most from what I have seen with disposable batteries use AAA. I found this one http://shop1.outpost.com/product/5027735 would it be a good choice?

I could use a little input on choosing an iPod. I know of apple and I believe there are generic also. I am familiar with what they do only. Also where are the best deals? I think a 2G would be the capacity for this gift. Any help appreciated but keep it simple

It could be due to the holiday traffic is less, or better yet they have made some improvements in the system. My guess is the traffic is less so the flow is faster.

Problems with new install of the 7000 modem
granpa replied to speedmeup2's topic in Show off your speed
With a signal of 81 it is very unlikely than you have water in the feed since a drop in signal is a usual sign. With a new install I have heard sometimes it takes time to smooth out. Remember no matter what you have heard or read there is only so much pipe to send and receive through and I'm betting that with the time of year that route is congested. Any changes you make need to be one at a time and give it a day or more to work. Keep posting. -

Not really, I've been using direcpc (one-way) since early 1999 so I would tend to guess I'm an old timer. I get slow-downs and then I run three spyware programs, sometimes twice each, and my speeds come back. I have also found that there is a difference between PC's, not much but could be up to 200 Kbps. So since I have the time I clean house often, my PC's I mean.
