  1. I voted "No, I think it may take away many of the good threads from the other sections of the site." (among other things) Any long time member (new members as well) has to ask himself/herself a couple of questions: Why do I love TMN so much? What makes it so popular? Why have I been here for so long? I'm sure it's because of the great atmosphere, openness of everything, and remarkable people whom you enjoy talking with daily. There wasn't anything hidden or exclusive when I first joined? A required post count wasn't mandatory to gain access to certain parts of the site. Freedom was granted to all members and everyone felt equal. This new "Members Only Lounge" section divides the unity of the community. Most of the topics here belong in "General" or "Off Topic" anyway. If the section remains, I'll support it. However, the need for it is nonexistent.
  2. That would be sweet if Comcast really pumped out bandwidth like that. Unfortunately, the fastest, public, config file offered through Comcast will only give you up to 17.6MB download/1MB upload, and that's exclusively on the Speed Tier Extreme package.
  3. It's only right to post it here. Anyway, Happy Memorial Day all. Enjoy it.
  4. Primary/Secondary, Master/Slave is determined by the following: IDE cable position of the drive IDE controller in which the drive is connected Jumper position on the physical drive itself Connecting the drive to the Primary/Secondary IDE controller isn't always enough to position the drive properly. Whether the actual drive takes on its role successfully depends on the jumper setting from the back panel (see pic) as well. Personally, I prefer Cable Select as it allows the system to do its job and choose the correct setting for you. Now that the jumper position is complete, lets get to the cable. Obviously, your main Hard Drive is connected to the Primary IDE controller located on your motherboard. That move attempts to makes it the Primary Master. As long as it's connected to the Primary end of the IDE cable, it'll take on that role. Your CD Rom drives should be connected to the Secondary IDE controller located on your motherboard. The first drive connects to Primary/ID0 while the second drive connects to Secondary/IDE1 (see pic). Double check your IDE cable/controller position along with the jumper setting (according to the example photos above). It will help you determine if your readings are correct. Good luck.
  5. Are you familiar with Registry Editor? If so, below is a quick 7 steps you can follow to have Windows XP re-detect/reinstall whatever CD drives you have on your system. The first 4 steps will backup your registry. In the event that this doesn't work for you, just run the key from My Documents, reboot, and everything will be restored to how it was prior to trying this fix. 1.) Run "regedit" and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} When you get to the folder {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, don't expand it. 2.) Right-click on it and select "Export" (pic1). 3.) In the "Export Registry File" window, select a location (normally My Documents), give the backup file a name, and click Save (pic2). 4.) Check to see if the file is where you saved it (pic3). 5.) Now, back in Registry Editor, right-click on the same folder again and select delete. 6.) You will receive a "Confirm Key Delete" warning. Select Yes to permanently delete that key and all of its subkeys. 7.) Reboot your system.
  6. Another way to change your NIC (Network Interface Card) MAC address (not to be confused with your modem's MAC address). Download a program titled "MacMakeUp" from Here Look for the sentence that begins with "Current release is 1.95..." and you'll find the link at the end. The program doesn't install anything. You can leave it on your desktop and run it from there. Upon starting the app, the first thing you'll want to do is choose the "Manufacturer" of your NIC card from the drop-down menu. A "New address" will now be displayed directly above it. The first 6 numbers/letters are to be left alone, but you'll need to change the remaining 6. After you have selected a combination of numbers (0 - 9)/letters (A - F) of your choice, click the "Change" button. In the bottom part of the window, you will see that the program is shutting down/restarting your connection. Your new address will be complete. A reboot isn't normally required, but give your cable modem a chance to identify the new changes. Note: If you see a message stating "Can't find OID database" written just to the right of Manufacturer (see pic), it means that your NIC can't be identified. You can just click the button titled "Generate random" to get a New address. From there, click the "Change" button. In the bottom part of the window, you will see that the program is shutting down/restarting your connection. Your new address will be complete. A reboot isn't normally required, but give your cable modem a chance to identify the new changes. Before changing you NIC MAC address, make a note of your current one. To do this, browse to: StartRunType ipconfig /all and look for the Physical Address of the active connection (see pic). or Start, Control Panel, Network Connections Right
  7. I voted "No". Personally, I don't care too much for the adult content. The Members Only Lounge is great, but some things don't belong at TMN. Age is a very big deal and could quickly become a problem. The last thing I'd want to see in a post here at TMN is full frontal nudity (Porn/Amateur content). It's not bad right now, but it'll get worse. The www. is already flooded with pictures/stories which contain vulgarity, so why bring it here? I have a "Favorites" folder full of links to that crap already (Oh yeah, I like the boobies!). TMN just deserves so much better. Most sites with adult content cater to men, so I imagine our female members will feel very uncomfortable with this addition.
  8. If your provider uses Sim cards (I think they all do except for Sprint?), you should be able to just pop it in the Razr V3 and go.
  9. Wow, I specifically searched for this thread thinking that it would be buried. To my surprise, it's been active. Well, nearly 8 months later (Reply #14), I'm at: Total Time Spent Online: 17 days, 17 hours and 51 minutes. 10. Here is a quick 150 fonts you can use. EDIT: I've had these for a long time. I extract them all to the Fonts folder after every fresh install, even before I install updates/drivers.
  11. Wow, pretty high on the prices. http://www.satnet.net/frame.php?cuerpo=html/servicios/cm.php
  12. What a nice surprise. Other ISP's in your area may be offering faster speeds, or are planning to do so. Comcast is stepping up to the plate so you'll remain one of their customers. I haven't been on the Comcast forums in quite a while. I wonder if anything has changed as far as what upgrade they'll be going with for the rest of the nation. Last time I checked, areas without any threatening competition would be getting 10Mb down/1Mb up as their fastest package.
  13. What region are you located in? Eastern?

  15. DX10 will be a part of Vista. It will be the new standard in Direct 3D, graphics technology and Direct Sound. DX10 video cards will be required to take advantage of new features (i.e. SM 4.0). The DirectX 10 API will have completely new and faster dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and is supposed to run much faster.
  16. Who is the manufacturer of you system? Is it pre-built or custom?
  17. Yeah, I'm just curious if MS incorporated any of the eye candy from Vista's Aero Glass. Screenshot:
  18. Is MS Word still functioning properly?
  19. Actually, the versions/builds are as follows: XP: 11.0.5358.4826 Vista: 11.0.5381.6167 Is there an option to turn on transparency with the XP version?
  20. Right-click on any .doc file Select Properties from the menu Under the General tab, click the Change button Select Microsoft Office Word from the list and click OK Back in the properties window, click Apply and OK your way out.
  21. Yeah, I have (comcast.net) displayed as well. Not sure why yours says (64.231), but your speed seem to be accurate. I don't know if this matters or not, but: What browser are you testing through? Are you behind a firewall/router? :::.. 22. Sometimes the sound quality comes down to the hardware of the machine. MUff!N, do you have a sound card or on-board? I have on-board hardware and it sounds pretty great, especially with the DFX plug-in. It could very well be the quality of S/PDIF. I only use analog sound when watching my tv tuner as it plugs right into the motherboard's CD Audio pins. Other than that, everything else comes through the digital, coaxial cable. I can't compare it to Nero's Media Player because it's been a while since I've used it. I can't quite remember how well it played media, but I do know that I've never had any bad experiences with it. The furthest I've strayed away from WMP is Winamp (which is still great). I just recently started testing VLC Media Player 0.8.5 through a friend's recommendation.
  23. I consider the link to be ok and not warez because it's not a paid program and never will be. As long as you have a Windows OS, Windows Media Player will be available as a free download. Note: Technically, it's not a public beta yet as it doesn't officially get released until May 17th. Someone at Microsoft has obviously given the world an early fix as these programs don't just upload themselves. I first saw this particular XP Pro version hit the web a couple of days ago. WMP11 has been pretty stable since March (Vista 5342). However, this is my first time seeing URGE function correctly as it wasn't ready in previous versions of WMP11 (just a week ago it wasn't working). Here is another link to an URGE Launcher page which will open up WMP under that tab. It came in my registration email and requires an Active X control to be installed in order to work properly. Anyway, everything (playability wise) is very smooth, and it looks fantastic. I don't know if the XP Pro build is the same as the one I'm using (could be slightly updated), but the 7.5 version of DFX that I've been using works great on Vista Ultimate 5381 32bit. WMP11 plays anything I throw at it providing that the necessary codecs are installed. I use K-Lite Codec Pack 2.72 Full for all my codec needs.
  24. What graphics card do you have? Read here: Guide to Dual Monitors in Windows Hope it helps Edit: Try this link as well. Microsoft Multiple Monitors and Dualview
  25. Yeah, I have Nvidia's hardware firewall, but I notice that my software solution does everything I need as well. It monitors outgoing/incoming connections, applicatons which are requesting access to the internet, hidden apps trying to gain internet access through other programs, etc. Using both hardware & software firewalls together works very well though. I use them both when I'm browsing through dangerous zones. I forgot to mention that I also use a full time spyware/adware solution. It'll take care of those banners, popups, flash, etc. This program is very nice and gets the job done. It replaced PopUpCop which I used for years. Additional Spyware/Adware Protection: Super Ad Blocker 3.1
