  1. That part people only know by the HN9000 modem(The Spaceway 3 is also owned by hughesnet). KU's are HN7000 units, And the leftover DW units, which Hughesnet really will put the shaft too one day when the gateways software are fully upgraded to only deal with HN units. And as from what I've read, is that the HN units software can fit more customers through the gateway. But most all people know about their service, is that the dish thing is on the side of the house or roof and has some wires that run into the house, through a massive hole, and connect to a modem thingy that they plug their computer or router into. And that call support keeps nagging them that it's the users computer to blame for any slowness. Which kind of violates the 'right of innocence' ya know. Heres some satellite location links. http://www.tracksat.com/satellite76.html (I did not link to the front page as there is an auto playing video(Bandwidth use)). http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/america.html There are some satellite forums(which I can't remember the address right now) where they are total Satellite geeks. They now all about bad satellites and if one has been replaced as well.
  2. Not everything shows up to call support's online tool and a free tech visit is the best way to go. Sometimes they will switch out the modem too, just to be sure. Occationally they may switch you to a different card at the Node(DSLaM). I think some people do have problems if they get a 'refurbished modem'. But there should be a sticker on the modem if that is the case.
  3. For the KU units. Or KA's as well 2. In your browser enter "http://192.168.0.1" (without the quotes) as the URL. This should open the interface. Click on the "System Information" button. You will find the satellite longitude and frequency on that page.
  4. If you are using a Telesat KA unit(which is what the Anikast site tests), on the satellite AnikF2(or even the F3, Second set of beams for south Ontario, South Quebec), a slow down can be due to an oversold beam and more business type users in your spotbeam. If a person is on a KU unit, which is Hughesnet, this type of slowdown is common, due to commercial users having priority over home users. A comparison in the States, is when there is a big lottery jackpot on PowerBall lottery. The afternoon can be real slow for Internet, leading up to the cutoff for sales. Due to satellite connected lottery terminals. I am on DSL and the sites I surf only show slowdowns when many, many users try to get to the same site at once(when linked from a larger compilation of news site). So if the satellite NOC, does not have enough bandwidth to the Internet, you can also experience slowdowns. Whether that be by hardware upgrades needed at the NOC or more fiber optic lines needed to connect to the Internet. Anik F2 Beams that are full are beam 6 , 19 , 28 . And if any others, I do not know. So next satellite in 2011 at some point. Click on pic to enlarge.
  5. And there is also moving the modem to a different phone plug. Since sometimes one of the phone wire runs can be damaged or have a bad connection in either the phone plug outlet or at the side of the house(demarcation point) where all the wires come in. I've got a Thomson Speed Touch DSL modem that is one inch from my router. 4 inches from one speaker and above a nightmare of wires under the desk. And a cordless phone about 12 inches away(combo 5.8Ghz and 900Mhz).
  6. I suppose they had you press in the reset button on the modem? Otherwise maybe the modem is bad or a bad card at the node? Internet light out means the modem can not negotiate a Internet connection at the node. But the rest shows up ok to be able to get the connection.
  7. From reading many posts in various places on "Repairs". I see it as part of a scam to give installers money for when beams have filled up with users and no new installs are taking place(mainly a WildBlue happening). But also to help move KU band people over to the new Hughesnet Spaceway3 and the KA band units. Some are managing to get free upgrades to the Spaceway3. Well, those that shout louder than the rest of the people who go to the library to surf instead, cause their system sucks total crap at certain times. But I have also read many posts, where the users satellite system dies. The user calls in about the death. Then support 'suggests' the user have a service man come out for $100 minimum to 'fix' the problem. If customer says 'no' to support? The users satellite system magically comes back to life within the hour. Coincidence? Note that the $100 is just for coming out to 'diagnose' the problem. And parts($300?) are extra. Occasionally people will call in too cancel, due to the system not working. User gets moved to 'loyalty and retention'(executive care at Hughesnet). User says system don't work and wants to cancel. Retention pulls the same thing of sending out a service man. Customer says no, but gets the offer of one free month(For a dead system!!!!). So user continues on, but modem/dish also magically comes back to life. One other problem that can happen in the summer, is with an overheated TRIA(electronics on the dish). But generally happens during the sun phase on the dish and can be diagnosed by spraying cold water on the dish electronics. As long as it has not leaked overtime, due to faulty manufacturing and is the cause of problems. I think WildBlues is on a third generation TRIA, due to manufacturing defects allowing water into the TRIA. And they still refuse to give their customers a free repair. What a TRIA looks like inside. http://oceanfalls.org/misc/trias/trias.html And then there are those KU band satellites that have electrical issues, so some transponders are dead, and more people have to share whats left on the satellite. Corporate America first and then home users last.
  8. All I get from the news on it, that it must be for the commercial customers to help improve and secure their connections. Here is an older version and specs. (copy and paste the whole link, as it don't want to be clickable.) http://www.hughes.com/HUGHES/Rooms/DisplayPages/LayoutInitial?Container=com.webridge.entity.Entity[OID[D84EF4187DF75C43A995BACD3F110AA9]] And a PDF. http://www.hughes.com/HUGHES/Doc/0/DBD5J93S28IKB2PVDU5O23RBC3/HX260_H37987_A4_HR_031709.pdf
  9. Maybe it got turned on, due to the occasional post lately that is a content spammer. You may only notice it as there being a ad link in the posts text, or as a signature spam content. They are quite interesting to read. Almost good English and the reply matches the thread, but missing enough verbs/adverbs, etc. to make you scratch your head.
  10. If I log in and then try to post within a minute, it keeps on happening. Been to lazy to file a note about it.
  11. So I found a nice little webcam capture program. http://dorgem.sourceforge.net/ The program updates are discontinued, but it does work on Windows 7 and XP. Heres some details on how to use it. And yes, East Vancouver BC is a bug in the cities bonnet. But it is being pushed away from the cities core. http://www.simplehelp.net/2006/09/27/how-to-use-your-pc-and-webcam-as-a-motion-detecting-and-recording-security-camera/ Note this file name line to make a new pic ,while leaving the previous pic intact. Otherwise it will delete the older pic. patio-camera%G%g and then .jpg And then it can be motion activated, but you must change the pic taking time to zero seconds per minute. And then it will take multiple pics for full motion details. Or change to more seconds between pic taking duration.
  12. Cause the Anikast speedtest is on the NOC(network operation center). Meaning it only tests the connection between you and the NOC. So a speedtest to here or another Internet based test will show slow(when you notice browsing is slow) and it will show fast on the Anikast test.. Same thing goes for the Hughesnet test. And Telesat owns the satellite and Xplornet is just the re-seller of the satellite use. It would seem that users purchased a connection to the Internet and not just the NOC. Wouldn't you think?
  13. There are ways, but the Admin of the router(if that isn't you, by the sounds of it) will know about any bypassing.
  14. For general information. http://www.robotstxt.org/ Not all Robots with obey robot.txt files. Some are a pain in the azz. http://www.robotstxt.org/faq/blockjustbad.html But I have found hidden pages on websites via search engines. Or found an old page that once had a link to it from the main pages.
  15. But I tried that already.   Couldn't find one with a decent review about stability or the features I'd like. Some free ones don't let you write to disc. they are just streamers. Or I don't trust the download source.
  16. Oh, yea. It helps to use the FAP free window to download and update these. Security is getting to be a bandwidth intensive game. Always make sure the auto updaters are off.....

  18. Does anyone have a link to a good, clean, free video surveillance software? Just going to use an old machine and standard webcam. OS's of Vista/Windows7 or maybe Linux. Criteria is being able to have motion sensing and being able to automatically write the images to the hard drive. And a bonus would too be able to adjust the webcams optics(light/dark).
  19. I've become so accustomed to having clean machines, that I would probably notice something like a virus. My Mums computer, I set it up with FireWall and Anti-Virus and FireFox. It runs for years, without any infections. The only time it had minor bugs was when she still used IE. And of course when the brat grandkid downloaded KaZaa and downloaded about 40 songs and then deleted the program two hours later. Now considering I had been there two hours earlier and had left after partly servicing the machine. I come back two days later and run the spyware scan and find about 7 pieces of crap. Which was odd. So I dig deeper and theres the KaZaa files and his name on the file folders. And it's been clean ever since. My kid gets the referral for some programs from his online friends. I check them out and see that they are scumware. Your standard IM's add-ons, and screen savers. No PopUp ads or loggers allowed here.
  20. Have you gone to FAP Jail? That hurts.
  21. Hopefully Hughesnets own information pages have the proper access site. I am not sure if it may of changed for the older units. http://customercare.myhughesnet.com/frm_usage.cfm You can also have your router track usage, if the firmware supports it.
  22. I suppose you are on a KU satellite? If you know which one, you can Google to see if it's one of the ones that have electrical problems. Bandwidth usage. Make sure Windows is not to go looking/downloading for updates other than during the FAP free time. 2am to 7am eastern time. Same for security programs. Lock down your router to WPA and 128 bit encryption with a shared-key number combo, encryption and by MAC address and for the hell of it make static IP's. So no one is getting free Internet from you. And with the Hughesnet information center in the modem( 192.168.0.1 ), you can do a tug pull test on the dish to see if you can get a higher signal to start.
  23. Well a quick search myself... Might you have a docking station to plug it into with a power button on the docking station? Give it a couple of slaps in the back(while pressing the power button) to see if the solder broke loose on the power switch. Or the worst is a power surge hit it. And killed the MoBo.
  24. I looked at the speed tests of "joepep " and they are stuck in one small range. Must be something locking down the speed.
