1. Welcome to the forum, miriam. It's good that you are asking questions. We get the entire spectrum of computer experience in our members, so don't feel as though you are stuck between a rock and a hard spot. We can help you! To check if you have SP2: Right-click on My Computer Click on Properties Here it will tell you the version of Windows and Service Pack you have installed
2. Hmmm. No Signal to Noise (SnR) ratio shown? The power levels don't look bad... Well, you may have a line issue. I'd call your ISP. The first step they may take is replace the modem (shouldn't cost you).
3. Hey, Kingknight67. It could be that the modem is overheating. Make sure that you have it in a location where it has enough ventilation (don't cover the venting slots on the modem). Keep it up off the carpet, to prevent any static buildup. Also make sure to keep it a good distance (a few feet anyway) from any other electrical devices. This will reduce electromagnetic interference. What model of Webstar is it? This number usually starts with DP (eg. DPX2203, DPC2100). You can log into the diagnostic page of the modem. Usually you just type 192.168.100.1 into the address bar of your browser. From here, you can check out all the signal levels, and usually the connectivity report/log, as well. If you are not sure how to interpret the signal levels, post them back here and we'll take a look. Otherwise, it's possible that you simply have bad hardware. These things go bad, just like everything else. It's not always the quickest approach to a resolution, but you can call up your ISP to report this. They usually have some software which will look up the modem stats (ie. flap list). They should be able to see that the modem has not been maintaining bloc sync. They may send a tech out to the home. If you call, be sure to tell them how long it's been going on, and how many times/day you lose connection, and that the cable light goes out. Don't get off the phone until you are satisfied with a resolution.
4. Hey luke. I would call up your ISP if this trace doesn't get any better, and demand that they do something to fix it. Just keep asking for the highest level of tech support. Somebody is bound do have direct contact with your ISP's GNOC. You are seeing packet loss at the switch from your ISP to it's backbone. That should be a clean transition, and you have every right to complain if it is not. You'll notice the times jump at hop 7. This is a internation link (Global Crossing), so it is normal to see times increase. The timeouts from this spot on are most likely due to the transition at hop 4.
5. I installed SeaMonkey about 15 mins ago. I can already tell you that it doesn't compare for plugin support to IE7. It looks very much like the Netscape browser. I don't know that much has changed at all, actually.
6. If you mean the netshell command (netsh int ip reset c:resetlog.txt), it resets your TCP/IP settings to the defaults. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357/en-us
7. The ISP is Cogeco: http://www.cogeco.ca/ Aha. They did upgrade my package to 7/640.
8. That's strange that the update is what caused the corruption. Makes you wonder what the update was for. Something similar happened to me when I tried to update Mandriva from the Install disk to install more software packages It would not write any files (just said "Failed"). When I tried to reboot to the HDD afterwards, it could not even load the bootloader (I think I was using GRUB). It would give me different errors each time and lock up, and I would have to hard boot the machine. So I ran the fresh Install, which has a great disk utility in it. Long story short, everything seems to be fine now....better even.
9. Well, I'm not exactly sure what's happened. I used the Mandriva installer to reallocate my partitions, format one, and reinstall the OS. I thought that my speeds were only good in Mandriva, so I booted to XP to compare. :::.. testmy.net test results ..::: Download Connection is:: 9172 Kbps about 9.17 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 1120 kB/s Upload Connection is:: 624 Kbps about 0.62 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB) Upload Speed is:: 76 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/07/25 - 11:55pm D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-0ETPVM5UN U-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-6XVEBDT4Y User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1) [!] :::.. testmy.net test results ..::: Download Connection is:: 9030 Kbps about 9.03 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 1102 kB/s Upload Connection is:: 600 Kbps about 0.6 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB) Upload Speed is:: 73 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 2) Test Time:: 2006/07/26 - 12:04am D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-0FRH8MKAT U-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-XSNVJTCU3 User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1) [!] Previous to this, I had been using Partition Magic 8.0 to partition and format my disk. 10. So I decided to reinstall Mandriva. There were a few changes I wanted to make, and I thought this would be the easiest way. When I configured my wireless card, I used a different driver than I had before. 11. Can you show us some tests for comparison? Also, have you tried booting windows into safe mode with networking and testing?
12. I agree with Swimmer. SSH is the way to go.
13. *ahem*....IRC
14. Never fools, Linux runs 100% (as does MAC OS X). But those damn WIN2K workstations at work....you're guaranteed to see a BSOD about once every month or two on your machine. I loathe Winblows. Right now, i've only got XP installed for a very few apps (mostly games). I spend most of my time booted into Linux.
15. Some of this may not apply to you directly, rode2006, but I included all of it. from: http://www2.sewanee.edu/wireless/accesspoints One thing left out that I'd like to add is that you may experience interference of the wireless signal due to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) from any device using power. This could be your fridge, microwave, TV, ceiling fan.....anything. Try to optimize the path of the wireless signal, and keep a good distance from any electrical devices.
16. Badasstang90, try loggin into the diagnostic page for your modem. Usually, type "192.168.100.1" into the address bar of your browser (without the quotation marks). Post your modem's signal levels here, and we can interpret them. Sounds like you may be dealing with a hardware or line issue. Another possibility is that you may call your ISP to have them check your modem's flap list.
17. I feel ya, bro. Always a noteworthy topic.
18. Try the attached cablenut file. Apply to registry, reboot, then run some more tests. Be sure to test from a couple different servers/mirrors to get the best accuracy.
19. Hello and welcome to the forum, CloudStrife08 Please read here and post back with your response to all steps: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-2097
20. We've seen many of you do your homework and post some quality stuff, so don't be shy. This means you!
21. Your IP address will change just by connecting the modem to another device (ie. another NIC). This is because the DHCP server is forced to create a new IP lease, since the IP lease is bound to the MAC of the client device, usually for a 72-hour period. You will likely have to reset the modem in order to clear the ARP/bridging table so that the new NIC gets an IP at all, but the IP lease to the old NIC will still be alive. Your method is a very thorough means of forcing a new IP lease from the DHCP server. Unfortunately, most PCs don't come with multiple NICs, so many people will be unable to take your approach. A lot of people are under the false impression that since they subscribe to 1 IP from their ISP, that their IP can't be changed from their end. This is incorrect, but the modem is only able to forward 1 IP at a time (meaning you cannot connect multiple devices to it simultaneously, and get multiple unique IPs) unless you purchase additional IPs.
22. Awesome job, dsteffe68 Can you provide some download speed tests? Are you on the 6 mbps package?
23. Both, yes, which is why I wasn't specific. =P
24. That's not a bad idea.
25. We did not know of this issue until it was reported. As Just- and Shug stated, this user has been permanently dealt with. This sort of thing happens from time to time. Not everyone in this world understands how far a little class can take you, and some people are downright offensive. It is nearly impossible to prevent things of this nature from happening, but when TMN members report these issues promptly to the Mods, it allows us to do our jobs before it gets out of hand, and before any harm may be done to the site, so that we can keep our community clean. So thank you to those of you who reported this member. Your help is greatly appreciated. The staff of Testmy.net sincerely apologizes for any offense you may have taken by the misconduct of other members. We do not condone behaviour on this site which is abusive, vulgar, pornographic, disparaging, prejudice, of a soliciting nature, or otherwise inappropriate.
