  1. I recently installed SuSE 10.1 to check it out, and I seem to remember there being an application which allows you to set your TCP settings manually. For the life of me, I can't remember what it's called. Swimmer runs SuSE, so I'm sure he'll know.
  2. I'm with you, Cholla. The word the person next to you chooses to use for what you call "God" may be different, due to whatever conditioning their own life brought them through, but the idea of God is universal and innate in human understanding. I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing with 100% certainty. But I do have to make certain assumptions in order to develop a reasonable understanding of this world, that I may make practical predictions and decisions based on what I experience. I think the subject of the Dawn of Creation is quite interesting, because everybody has formed an opinion on it. Why? Because we need to. Nobody can possibly know the answer to this age-old question, but we all have our own ideas, so that we are able to form an understanding of the world we live in, so that we can simply go about our lives. And every one of our opinions on this matter include the involvement of something far greater than ourselves. This vaguely definable precence must surely be God.
  3. No... a dork is the guy with the pogs and the pokemon issue gameboy in his fanny pack, wearing the suspenders and socks pulled up to his knees. We are simply geeks with good taste.
  4. A good desk is definitely key for school. You've gotta be comfortable where you work. Tiger direct usually has some pretty good deals on computer desks. For the cost of gas you'd likely spend to make the trip to Ikea, the shipping to order from tigerdirect would probably be worth it too. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?cat=221&keywords=desk&noredirect=1
  5. I really like this point here. Something that I have always believed to be true is that the universe -- time, life, space, matter -- is like an elastic band. It is a constant cycle of shooting forth, and then collapsing on itself. This ties in with the Big Bang theory, something that has never really seemed like a viable explanation for the dawn of everything, to me. There was no absolute beginning; there could not be. The moment of the "Big Bang" was just another node in the cycle. For there to be beginnings and ends, there must be some constant from which these things are derived. I think the simple explanation is that we seem to need to believe that there was an absolute beginning, because that sort of logic works in our mortal world. But that is not true for all things.
  6. Shug you gonna share all that loot??? Happy Birthday man!!!!!
  7. Hi vitico66, It is very important to powercycle your devices properly in order to establish an IP connection between them. Currently, it sounds like your router is not getting an IP from the modem. Here's what to do: Disconnect the power supply to the router Disconnect the power supply to the modem Look for a reset button on the modem (ie. a pinhole). Some models do not have this. If yours does, activate the reset button. Return power to the modem. This is a good oportunity to ensure that the cable from the modem to the router is secure. Wait a few minutes to ensure that the modem is completed it's cycle, and is up and running. Return the power supply to the router. When the lights have stabilized on the router, try to release and renew your IP. If you are getting a 192.168.x.x IP address, then you have connection to the router. You should then be able to log into the router diagnostic page to apply the appropriate configuration settings. Since you know that you the connection works when you connect the PC directly to the modem, you should call the Linksys for further assistance if this does not work for you. Good luck!
  8. This is true: FDDI, Sonet, OCx, ATM. Ahem:
  9. August 1, 2006 --Time Warner and Comcast have reached an official agreement over the purchase of Adelphia. If you would like to see how this will affect you: http://www.twcusoon.com/
  10. We've had Mastertech's likes here before: people who try to prove that they are somehow worthy by being argumentative and confrontational. They have a complete disregard for civility, and back up their claims with more caustic attitude than evidence. We are not simply a gathering of techies and professionals, we are a community of friends. If people cannot respect our code, then as far as I'm concerned they are not welcome. I enjoy being on this site everyday, not just because of the content, but because I like the people here. That's the major part of what keeps me coming back. You're all good in my books.
  11. Did you check for a valid IP address? Are you able to ping by URL or IP address? Firewall?
  12. Awww....another one I got suckered into by a misleading title
  13. I was watching this for the majority of my shift at work today. Awesome stuff.
  14. I'm familiar with the software you mention. I have ethereal running on my linux currently. It's not bad, but runs off Pcap...that's an easy workaround. Cain & Abel, I seem to remember, is a brute force/dictionary password cracker. That's a totally mad way to sniff a password, because if you have any sort of network analyzer on the doorstep, you'll pick that up and smash it before it gets past "charlie." WPA is not secure. It uses a pulic key. Anyone can get their hands on the key to the algorithm if they know where to look. Anyway, I'm not trying to argue with you DLewis, you're right that it is good to enable these security devices. My point is that there really isn't any real security for wireless. I think that turning your SSID broadcast off is probably the most critical step...you'll just get passed over for the next network. I'm looking forward to seeing what 802.11i brings to wireless security: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11i
  15. How so? WEP is not secure. There are way too many exploits. With MAC filtering enabled as "Permit Only," no other devices can connect to our network than those on the list. Since the router is the only access point on the network (don't use range expanders), there is no backdoor. Turning the SSID broadcast off is a means of keeping under the radar. I think people have way too much faith in WEP security, and WPA for that matter. Anything being broadcasted with a key or passphrase is vulnerable to being sniffed out and cracked. WEP authenticate based on MAC address (der, mistake there), and WPA uses TKIP and EAP, both of which have been widely exploited. I'll admit, having these security features enabled is better than leaving your network wide open, but if your neighbour is intent enough on getting past encryption, they will. However, if they're not on the MAC filter list, it doesn't matter. Unless they break into your home, hook up to the router with cat-5, crack your admin page, and put themselves on the list....they don't stand a chance. And then it would be as simple as taking them off the list, changing your admin password, and getting a dog. I could see if you were running a business, and transferring a lot sensitive data, that it would be more of a priority to encrypt it. However, I'm just worried about ppl hopping on my network and leeching bandwidth.
  16. Hey philp. I use the same router. This is the configuration I've found works best: SSID Broadcast: OFF Network Authentication: OPEN Data Encryption: DISABLED MAC Filtering: ENABLED This way all you need to do is log into the router and put the MAC address of your WLAN card into the MAC filtering list. You can find the MAC by performing IPCONFIG/ALL from the command prompt.

  18. Hello and welcome, bob12345. So you have bypassed your router (connected your PC directly to your modem) and everything is cool? I'm assuming you've used an ethernet connection to the router to make sure it's not just wireless interference. Have you tried resetting your router? I have never owned a Netgear, but most routers have a reset button. It's usually a recessed button, like a pinhole. Disconnect the power, and hold the reset button in for a few seconds. Then powercycle your devices (power everything down, bring up modem, then router, then pc's). This should restore everything on the router to the factory default. Test the router using ethernet....leave the wireless out of the picture for a bit (another can of worms). Let us know if this makes any difference.
  19. Take your pick, dude. I just posted the whole whack cause I couldn't narrow it down! Great project tho.
  20. Here's another: Song: Wish You Were Here Artist: Pink Floyd So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage? How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.
  21. Here's one of the best lyrical songs I've ever heard. Song: Changes Artist: Tupac Shakur **NOTE: explicit content Come on come on I see no changes. Wake up in the morning and I ask myself, "Is life worth living? Should I blast myself?" I'm tired of bein' poor and even worse I'm black. My stomach hurts, so I'm lookin' for a purse to snatch. Cops give a damn about a negro? Pull the trigger, kill a nigga, he's a hero. Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares? One less hungry mouth on the welfare. First ship 'em dope & let 'em deal the brothers. Give 'em guns, step back, and watch 'em kill each other. "It's time to fight back", that's what Huey said. 2 shots in the dark now Huey's dead. I got love for my brother, but we can never go nowhere unless we share with each other. We gotta start makin' changes. Learn to see me as a brother 'stead of 2 distant strangers. And that's how it's supposed to be. How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me? I'd love to go back to when we played as kids, but things change, and that's the way it is. (Come on, come on) That's just the way it is. Things'll never be the same. That's just the way it is. aww yeah... I see no changes. All I see is racist faces. Misplaced hate makes disgrace for races we under. I wonder what it takes to make this one better place... let's erase the wasted. Take the evil out the people, they'll be acting right. 'Cause mo' black than white is smokin' crack tonight. And only time we chill is when we kill each other. It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other. And although it seems heaven sent, we ain't ready to see a black President, uhh. It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact... the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks. But some things will never change. Try to show another way, but they stayin' in the dope game. Now tell me what's a mother to do? Bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you. You gotta operate the easy way. "I made a G today" But you made it in a sleazy way. Sellin' crack to the kids. "I gotta get paid," Well hey, well that's the way it is. We gotta make a change... It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes. Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live and let's change the way we treat each other. You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do what we gotta do, to survive. And still I see no changes. Can't a brother get a little peace? There's war on the streets & the war in the Middle East. Instead of war on poverty, they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me. And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do. But now I'm back with the facts givin' 'em back to you. Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up, crack you up and pimp smack you up. You gotta learn to hold ya own. They get jealous when they see ya with ya mobile phone. But tell the cops they can't touch this. I don't trust this, when they try to rush I bust this. That's the sound of my tune. You say it ain't cool, but mama didn't raise no fool. And as long as I stay black, I gotta stay strapped & I never get to lay back. 'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs. Some buck that I roughed up way back... comin' back after all these years. Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat. That's the way it is. uhh Some things never change.
