That depends on what you do with your Internet connection. If you download a lot of large files, then you will most definitely notice the diff. But if you just use the Internet for browsing and email or whatever, there's no point in upgrading. Basically, if you find yourself saying: "man, I wish this download would be done already," then upgrade. If not, then don't.
-
Raging_rsx, there's quite a difference between the first download test you posted and the second one.

Cris, it looks like Mactron is right on the money there. Verizon offers a wide array of different packages from yours on the lower end (no offense

Hello and welcome, Cris! What speed package do you subscribe to with Verizon? If you're not sure, how much do you pay for Internet per month?

Yes, sorry about the confusion, JustinPO. Cholla, that's exactly what I meant. JustinPO, are you on a router at home? meaning, does your modem hook into your computer, or into another device (the router). If you are on one, is it wireless? If not, trouble could be in the phone lines. That's the trouble with DSL, it's dependent on the phone lines, and higher traffic (more calls being made) during the day will affect the speed. I have DSL at home and see the same fluctuations. The reason I ask about if you are on a wireless network is because many things going on during the day may affect the wireless signal. There's not much you can do about that except get closer to the router or hardwire into it.
-
Hey JustinPO, welcome to the forum Be sure to reset your modem: -turn off all computers and routers in the home -turn off modem (disconnect power cord if you need to) and let sit for a while -check that all phones have filters -check that modem does not have a filter! -check to ensure that all other cables are secure -bring up modem, wait one minute -bring up router (if you're on one), wait one minute -bring up computer(s) -check speed! From what you've mentioned, it sounds hardware related. This should help!

Little help for an inexperienced broadbander?
FallowEarth replied to FlailSpound's topic in Make it Faster...
FlailSpound, when you connect via ethernet, you won't have to reinstall the modem. When you connect via USB, you must install the drivers for the modem. But if the NIC (network interface card) is installed properly, you just hook up the ethernet cable and go. The NIC has its own set of drivers that should have already been installed if there is an ethernet port on the tower of your PC. -
Microsoft Takes On BitTorrent (NEWS)

easy now, this isn't the place for spams or flames. -
I have the feeling Dennis might head west, towards LA or TX...maybe hit Galveston or Corpus Christi.
-
Hey, great RR speeds there, D4rk.3y35 (Pitbull, you're correct about the package)!!
-
It could be firmware, but I know that modem is designed to update automatically.
-
Pitbull's right about the formatting bit.
-
Are you connected through a router? I mention this because line 2 of your traceroute is a little high if you are on a router, might be an incompatibility issue there. If you have a router, could you provide the make and model, and also make and model of your modem.

yeah, sounds like your modem. give cox a call

If you are able to get a valid IP address and can ping some sites (try by URL and by IP address), then the connection is fine, it's a browsing issue.

I was looking at my reset history...
FallowEarth replied to Bird Fan's topic in HughesNet (DIRECWAY)
Maybe when you reset it, it created a time warp. Kinda like Back to the Future, you know? :haha: -
welcome to the forum, drtauseef who is your isp? if it is cable, with windows XP on your pc, then check out: https://testmy.net/forum/t-6025 also be sure to check out the links below.

To test between the two modems I would suggest connecting directly to one modem, try a couple of test here at testmy.net, then connect directly to the other, try the same tests, and compare results. Before testing, be sure to have power off to each modem, hook your ethernet cable from your PC to it, then power it up.

Hey Gib4500. Cablenut is good for tweaking your speeds out when you are close to your cap but want to max out your speed. It will only up the speed maybe 10-15%, but it will not take you from 1.3 Mbps up to 4 Mbps. It is likely that there is something in your network or on your computer that is interfering. Are you connected to a router? Are you running any firewalls or antivirus programs? Basically any program that has Internet access can slow down the speeds, or affect the speed test. P2P's, IM's, optimizers/toolbars, etc. can be interfering with your results, so it is best to simplify the connection by shutting these programs down when testing. Have you checked out https://testmy.net/forum/t-2097 and https://testmy.net/topic-4257 ? Also if you could run a traceroute and post results (omit your own IP address(es), the first one or two): Windows XP/2000: click start, then run. type cmd and click ok. on the command line type: tracert testmy.net
