  1. :haha: nah, just sitting in from of a machine for years on end will do this to you , my posts get smashed all the time, no worries.
  2. Personally I haven't come across this, that I know of lol. Bt just make sure you have your bios password protected, that should do the trick, but so many newer MB's are "live updatable" from the OS, I'm not sure if you could stop it. I also wouldn't worry about it. From what I gather if the things infested, it would, or could fry the chip if the virus is strong enough, and your done, but who knows whats out there.
  3. And we need people like you !
  4. From what I understand, thats the only way to get rid of it, and if it's on your HDD, on the chip or the magnetic area then it will install right back again.
  5. Looks like you've done your homework, and done quite a few adjustments, which would lead us to believe it's not in your system. maybe try several different cablenut packages here on testmy.net, or have you tried several of them already. I know sometimes a ccs file that has been set for your specific connection, will not be as efficient as something that is made for something entirely different. Just for testing, maybe try a wide range of files for cablenut, try the fastest connection file you can find, see what happens. I wish I has more for you.
  6. Open Firefox, click on Tools, click on options. Click on advanced tab, then on sub tab called general. Select the checkbox which says
  7. A note on "knowing" your speeds, after a while using a fast connection regular, you do get the feel for it, I have tested here so much that I can honestly say that while watching the progress bar during the test, I can usually come within 500Mb before the test is complete. When normally surfing, I can tell when there's an increase, pr decrease in my speed. I'm on TWC 15/7 which for what I do, and what I have here is great , other then the upload of course that whole thing is a scam if you ask me. The damn upload should match the download. But either way, when a page doesn't simply appear in less then the blink of an eye, I know there's an issue. So all I'm saying is from where I sit, it is possible to know what your speed is after a while. I will attest to that. Now I'm not on dsl, but I have been, and the connection was very stale and reliable. :::.. 8. Yes, I'm with you there, if it's important to ya, then burn the puppy, we all know mechanical drives fail. Is the drive your talkin about a small laptop drive in an enclosure, or close to it ? I have one like that, it's great for when I go out to a client, and I need to compress, and move data so I can do a reformat, there priceless
  9. I hope that you reset the MBR sometime in there to clear the chance of a rootkit, and checked the BIOs for a virus.
  10. YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. Western Digital has something called there "world book" , I have a 1TB and just sold two 500 GB mybook's, the world books are connected via ethernet, and has a nice interface to control connections, users permissions, static IP, you can stream movies , music to anything you set up. Also comes with memeo backup software, and a nice online suite. It works well. The "mybook" is cool to , connects via usb, esata, and firewire. Never had any issues with either.
  12. Were geting into an issue that seems to be the brunt of what people perceive to be the issue in this country. So I'll comment. I don't care about a contract. There meaningless if either party does not stand up to there agreement. It is paper. Hello ? If I sell you a widget, and promise that it will do what you want it to do, and it doesn't, that is called breech of contract. Now if you look into the contract, it will have a sentence in there, just one, it may be 5000 words long, but only xxx words will mean anything . They will say in so many words, "we can only guarantee this widget will do this" . Read it . It is not the companies fault that you did not read the fine print, that you did not hire a law firm to dissect there legal mumbo jumbo to tell you that your getting the shaft if you sign, buy, or agree to it. This is how business is done, is it right ? Moral ? humane ? I'm not getting into that, none the less. It is a contract, read it, and if you are not getting what the contract entitles you, then you have the right to contest the contract. There betting you will not hire a law firm, and there right. They bring in revenue, build there customer base, then start expanding. If they don't expand in time, to cover there costs, they go down, simple as that. And the government already controls enough, as well as there allocated bandwidth in the spectrum.
  13. Dude, I eat fruit and salad together like it's my last meal lettuce, grapes, red, and yellow grapefruit, fresh peaches, slices strawberries (the things mama t cant stand ) and the tops, I eat the greenery while i'm at it, more vitamins in there then in the damn fruit lol , bananna, and pineapple chunks. Then a huge plate of pasta salad , "rotini" w/ all kidza shit smothered all over it, who knows what lol.
  14. Nice gift I recieved a couple books I was wanting, and a fruit bowl in bed Have a good day you fathers
  15. Well we aren't exactly like other forums that lock solved topics, especially when this topic isn't solved yet. I'm not sure how I missed this one, it's a rarity for me. lol aar, w/o searching, what is your ISP, I didn't catch that anywhere. What are your advertised speeds, or what are you supposed to be getting. What are you doing that you notice the ping latency, Iv'e seen many people with decent speeds, and cruddy pings. Sometimes inexplicable.
  16. The memory stack has nothing to do with throughput , with vista from what I gather about the way they adjust everything within the registry area is all dynamic, which changes on the fly , I guess. Bt there is a tweak here for vista, that has help many people get better control over that. Follow this link that VanBuren made for the world to enjoy Vista TCP tweak , Iv'e used it myself on a system of my own, it made a difference, not considerable, but enough to make it well worth implementing. Others have posted huge results, try it.
  17. Yea, I'd be happy w/ that too, is it consistent ?
  18. :haha: Your really stretching it now , but funny none the less
  19. i haven't done that with mine yet, butIv'e flashed just about every rom out there for it, been working on my own, I'm thinking the kitchen I'm using is outdated, it's been several months now since Iv'e taken te time. I'll get it done.
  20. Nice, you using it as a modem ?
  21. The DSL company will surely bring out a modem when they do the install. You can't just switch out a modem, the MAC addy has to be set in the ISP's servers, otherwise the data will have no idea where to go. Kinda. When you first get DSL, they tell you NOT to unplug the modem for a specified period of time, this allows there servers to regulate the distance, and performance, and plenty of other things I have no idea about. So once they get it installed, leave it alone, if you don't , then you'll never know your full potential of bandwidth, from the way I understand it. There will be a huge sticker on the new modem they bring that states this. When you switch the modem, your going to have to call the ISP, and tell them the make, model, and MAC, they must type this in, or you will have no connection.
  22. Well if it were me, and I had tested at, or above my ISP cap, then I would leave it alone, (if I had done all the adjustments that I could) unless one had features that I needed that the other one didn't. Or I would use the one that was most recent. But that doesn't always mean more efficient either. lol
  23. This is something that although light hs been shed in for some time now, still, continues to go relatively un noticed, and that's just what those that are determined to compromise your system enjoy. A rootkit is some thing that is used to hide the fact that there are vulnerabilities on your system. So no matter how much you pay, no matter what your personal preference of antiviral software is, or how often you scan for them, you will not find them. Source So as you can see, (pun intended) you cannot see the culprit. And since they act as system devices, or necessary software, there not detected generally during a standard scan. Many of the antivirus programs now have different types of rootkit scanners, but as with other widely used programs, "they" , work all the more diligently to develop rootkits that shut off that part of the scanner during the scan, or hide during the scan. There are fingerprint detectors within some antiviral programs that are able to detect "hidden" rootkits, but it's a daily battle. One of the most trusted rootkit finders would be Radix , never heard of it ? Imagine that. Iv'e used it on systems where I would say "nope, nothing bad here ", and there you have it, right there the culprit is. Which will explain a plethora of different issues you may have been having, that you wrote off as bandwidth issues, or "oh well, it's just one popup ". Another is Sophos If you have any proven methods, or software solutions to detect, remove rootkits, feel free to add, them.
  24. DOH !! : x :haha:
