debbie53 Posted August 31, 2011 CID Share Posted August 31, 2011 It depends what you like or don't like, and what you use it for. Personally, I like a PC running Linux. I take other people's throw-aways with Windows, upgrade the hardware if needed, and install Linux, because I am cheap. I can have pretty icons when I want, a black terminal when I don't, or anything in between. I have a good, stable system, and don't have to worry about viruses. The desktop computer I am using now is seven or eight years old, but it works fine for my purposes.
mudmanc4 Posted August 31, 2011 CID Share Posted August 31, 2011 I agree debbie , an old box makes a great linux machine ! Triran, there are dozens of games for the mac , in fact most of what can be run on windows can also be run on mac. Look around a bit , I think you'll be very surprised at what you find. I've played cod4 , AC1-2 , bioshock , crysis, and more just to name a couple on my mac.

Now, when setting up a network of computers, Linux is usually a good base. Windows works exceptionally well too. Why not Mac's? Unless you have tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars to piss away, what's the point? The "Hackintosh" put OS X on a PC. So really, why buy Apple's Hardware? You can build a PC with Windows or Linux and MUCH better specs for less than a Mac. Thanks, EBrown

TriRan Posted September 1, 2011 CID Share Posted September 1, 2011 i doubt i could find much better since they're putting I7's in the IMac's now and thats pretty much the best you can go atm but i could probably find equivalent hardware for less
nanobot Posted September 1, 2011 CID Share Posted September 1, 2011 Really? Go spec me out a 27" iMac equivalent with much better specs for less. We will even ignore the all in one part of the iMac. Challenge Accepted. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130579 Motherboard: $85 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070 i7 Processor: $315 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104262 x2 16GB RAM: $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066 Case: $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533 HDD: $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131391 Video Card: $350 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824185011 Monitor: $840 Total so far: $1870 A 27" iMac with similar config: $2799 Seems like I saved $929 by looking up my own parts. (Oh, my RAM was faster btw, and I can expand to 32GB.) Edit: Forgot to mention that Apple charges $150 for a 1TB HDD, whereas I could order multiples of mine for $90 a pop. And I don't know what there SSD is, but here's a cheaper one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820249011 SSD: $380 Cost for iMac SSD: $500. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=557294&CatId=4534 x4 32GB RAM: $500 Cost to upgrade iMac from 4GB to 16GB: $600 Saving again. Another Edit: It is $3649 to MAX the 27" iMac. Using the previously listed items, the total to achieve the equivalent is $2340, $1309 cheaper. When I double my RAM size, it's $2720. STILL $929 cheaper than an iMac with 16GB and a Core i7. (This was without the additional storage NAS.) As I add HDD's and SSD's I am still cheaper. mudmanc4 Posted September 1, 2011 CID Share Posted September 1, 2011 Yes EBrown , but your still running windows. Forgetting the fact I've already played MW2 on mac ...... around a year and a half ago , don't remember. Apple has the resources to go further then overstock devices manufactured for there operating system, designed to work together is the key, this is much different then going out and cobbling what might be considered great components together to try and achieve what Apple does by design. And besides , a mac can pee sitting down , OR standing up without splashing on the rim or seat !!!!!!
dlewis23 Posted September 1, 2011 CID Share Posted September 1, 2011 EBrown, First tip. Never use yellow for text. It's very hard on the eyes. Edit: Forgot to mention that Apple charges $150 for a 1TB HDD, whereas I could order multiples of mine for $90 a pop. And I don't know what there SSD is, but here's a cheaper one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820249011 SSD: $380 Cost for iMac SSD: $500. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=557294&CatId=4534 x4 32GB RAM: $500 Cost to upgrade iMac from 4GB to 16GB: $600 Next tip. You never buy Ram or Hard Drives from Apple or any OEM. You should know this because everyone else does. Include the Ram/Hard Drive upgrade price that you would pay on Newegg. Going from 4GB to 16GB of ram on the iMac is about $70 bucks http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=ShellShocker-_-20-231-295-_-09012011_1 The current gen iMac can actually go to 32GB of ram. As with ram no one ever buys the SSD from Apple or any OEM unless you like getting ripped off. So anyone could put the same SSD you posted if you would like an SSD. Taking your config (No SSD) your at $1870 to a stock 27" iMac with 16 GB of ram from Newegg which is $1770. Ill give you that your not at the Dell Display at $999 (The DoubleSight one you picked really isn't equal). Is your config faster? Yes. But on a day to day basis the average person probably wouldn't notice much a difference between the two unless your rendering lots of video. But now if you know were you look, you know browse around a little bit you can find things like this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/FD063LL/A?mco=MjMxMjQ0MjE Hmm. Thats looking pretty similar to your config at $1869 Just gotta put 16GB of ram in it at $70 bucks. For that extra $70 you get a All-in-One design (Only 1 cable coming out the back), dual thunderbolt ports, OS X, better support, it doesn't sound like there is an air plane in the room when its running. I never used yellow. I used Green. 00FF00 And that wasn't a stipulation. You stated, "Go spec me out a 27" iMac equivalent with much better specs for less," you did NOT state "while keeping in mind that I will be using non-OEM parts for the computer." You and Mudman are telling me two COMPLETELY different things. "Designed to work together," and yet you are buying aftermarket? Where does the "designed to work together" come into play there? OH! I FORGOT! It doesn't. Also, your comparison is wrong. "Taking your config (No SSD) your at $1870 to a stock 27" iMac with 16 GB of ram from Newegg which is $1770." You left out the Core i7, the stock iMac 27" is a Core i5*. You, who claims to know Apple so much, should know that. In reality, my config trump's Apple's in the Technical comparison. I don't have $6000 to do a Lab Study, but if I did, I would. And I would use two non-biased parties to judge it. (See note below.) Also, you are all forgetting one HUGE fact: The Mac OS (OS X) is based ENTIRELY on Linux. It is just a customized version. Please don't confuse the issues with the facts. You state that OS X is better, in reality I could take Debian, add a "Dock," and modify the UI a little, and make OS X. Sure, they do packages differently, but the point is, it is based off of the Linux system. *NOTE: If you are going to compare my initial config to a stock iMac 27", use this processor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074 Core i5: $190. Brings mine to $1745. I am still $25 cheaper. Which continues to prove my point. You are attempting to compare Apples to Oranges. Yes, they are both roundish, and yes, they are both fruits. But they have distinct flavours and colours, and even growing cycles. Edit: Forgot to mention, the initial Challenge I accepted CANNOT be completed, because you worded it incorrectly. It is PHYSICALLY impossible to find an iMac EQUIVALENT with BETTER SPECS. (I capitalized these so you can see the point, you worded it improperly; however, I will not hold this against you.) Thanks, EBrown Ok you want to be an ass hole, well two can play at that game. If you want to compare to a 27" iMac first off use the Dell 27" display and not that POS you picked out. The Dell uses the exact same panel as what the iMac uses. That adds $160 to your total. I know a stock 27" iMac comes with a i5 and not an i7 as you had with your config. I gave that to you, just as I gave you the lower cost display you picked out. But will play this game now. Here is your config with using the i5 you just said to use and the proper monitor that you should have used. Motherboard: $85 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813130579 i5 Processor: $190 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115074 16GB RAM: $120 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820104262 x2 Case: $70 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811129066 HDD: $90 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822136533 Video Card: $350 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814131391 Monitor: $999 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824260038 Total: $1904 Stock 27" iMac $1699 + 16GB Ram $70 - Total: $1769 Hmm..... Oh and BTW. Mr. Know it all, OS X is not based ENTIRELY on Linux as you say. Mac OS X is actually NeXTSTEP which is a Mach Kernel with parts of FreeBSD and NetBSD. I suggest you STOP being a smart ass, little 17 year old, that thinks he knows it all and go take a moment and learn what OS X actually is. It's very clear with your "in reality I could take Debian, add a "Dock," and modify the UI a little, and make OS X" that you have no clue what the hell you are talking about and thats a FACT. dlewis...did you really think that was yellow?? just asking cuz it's green...there is a color blindness that sees green as yellow... Well the monitor I was using when I made the post made it look yellow, It's a really old HP/Compaq monitor that is used just for managing a server at the office and it has a really odd color tone now. mudmanc4 Posted September 2, 2011 CID Share Posted September 2, 2011 hahahaa , and still yet , my mac can pee sitting down or standing up , without of course splattering everywhere , try that with a windows box !!!!! btw EBrown , I have to correct a couple things , Apples hardware uhh ( the logic board , or the motherboard ) , is in fact designed for apple proprietary operating system annnnnd kernel. side note : if it were not , then you could simply install any apple OS on any hardware, without hacking it all up, effectually removing any and all stability , security and mostly useability. And people really need to understand , that linux is NOT an operating system , the different " flavors " or distros of linux run with a GUI sitting on top a kernel. I forget where it started without searching. Geezus , we need a real effective trojan for OSX , seriously , people are so dang ready to discredit something because it's simply better then something else. Lets all just grab some popcorn and wait for that huh ? lol You all know it's inevitable anyhow, so get the threads started now. oh btw Elliot , when did you learn to use colors ? Man , your really coming along

Go Fuck Yourself Dlewis, Elliott Vincent Brown, Honour Student P.S.: The fact that Apple stole from Sun only adds to my disgust of them. Thank you for telling me that. And it's also based HEAVILY on BSD, of course, I don't expect you to know that. You wouldn't believe it if it were true anyway. WOW. Getting frustrated are we. Your Vocational professor must be making you watch MSNBC or something because bull shit is just flying off you left and right. Your processor must be one of those far left loons if he's teaching you facts like this "Also, you are all forgetting one HUGE fact: The Mac OS (OS X) is based ENTIRELY on Linux." because thats not a fact, and yet you say I'm terrible at reading facts, your terrible at stating facts. You can't really be this dumb to think that I'm 30+, for someone who thinks he has all this knowledge of computers, yet he fails to click my name and figure out that I'm 24. Just so you know, I do this to challange people who put false information out there, you know people like you. I don't spend hours thinking up counter-arguments or googling around, I pull this out of my head while I'm typing. I've been fucking around with computers and tech for a very long time. Almost as long as you have been alive. I know my stuff because I have to know it. It's my job to know it. Yea thats right I actually do this for a living. Your not the first 17 year old to come around and think he knows it all and you surely won't be the last. Here is some advice for the real world because it I think you would maybe like to go in IT maybe some day and I suggest you listen up because this is the only advice i'm ever going to give you. Saying things like this "I get suspended for beating the shit out of people like you almost monthly." Gets you nowhere in the real world. All it does is make you sound like a total fucking retard and that gets me to when you say this "This is yet another person you have pissed off to the point where they have quit Testmy.net, you sorry excuse for a human being. I hope CA3LE is proud of you." All that does is put a giant banner over your head saying "I can't deal with any kind of pressure". And no one in the real world wants to do business with someone who is a fucking retard or can't deal with pressure. You need to grow up real fast because everything you wrote shows how immature you really are and your lack of experience. ninjageek Posted September 2, 2011 CID Share Posted September 2, 2011 Ok, While I am Not gonna take sides/get in the middle of anything. Yes, In certain Forums on the net I do Flame/get flamed. I always thought this site was a bit more adult. May Not agree with everything posted, I thought the whole Idea of Adult forums was to Share Ideas, The Ability to disagree, and let it go. Or Debate the subject with some bit of respect. If I am wrong, Ok, why do you think I am wrong ? Maybe I am. Or Maybe I still think I am right. No matter, Let it go. In the end what does it matter ? What effect does it have on your personal Life ? I just think People are taking the internet/forums a bit to serious. We don't agree. Thats cool, Lets agree to disagree, its all good. Thats my 2 cents. Oh yea if you think im wrong then your a poo poo head.

Unlike us poor working stiffs who upgrade when neccessary not when we have the loose change and momma will let us. And they get insulted if you surmise that theyonly have it because of the money, and even force the comparison of more expensive brands just to prove they are right. facts if you have the money and "maybe" the need get a mac. For the average working stiff windows does us fine and does what we want. Undeniable truth. I would buy emachines or gateway way before shitcanning lots of cash on a apple or mac cash draining machine. But then I dont need a machine like that either. And the "AVERAGE" joe doesn't either. PS, if you people think that is flamimg for TMN? You have either just joined in the last year or two ............ or the memory is the first thing to go. What was there was nothing. Yea I'm suppose to be more mature yet your the one saying "Fuck you" to me, so I should just let you get a pass because your immature? Thats not how the world works. You have got a lot to learn. mudmanc4 Posted September 2, 2011 CID Share Posted September 2, 2011 Hey gorman , one question for you so long as were letting it all hang out here hahaha Correct me if I'm wrong ok , as I'm questioning because I want to understand you ok Are you equating " physically working people " as POOR WORKING STIFFS " ? Poor ? Working? Stiffs ? Huh ? what the hell is that ? Sounds like one of those blips you see on the news about all those " poor working people " where others are holding them back , and the world and non union people , and the right is picking on them " kinda things , yes ? Just checkin so I know where your coming from. Yes yes , I know your in construction ok , makes it even more strange your speaking like this. And the other one " For the average working stiff windows does us fine and does what we want." your kidding right ? Are you saying that windows is for democratic labour union people ? For the record , for nearly 20 years to the year I worked as a laborer in construction, started hanging drywall with professionals at the summer of my 13th birthday, soon realized not for me and someone asked if I would get into plastering. So I did . I worked my way through the years to owning my own business and employing many of the same people who I worked with , who taught me, some taught me what not to do lol All the while still playing with my hobby since about the same age I started , computers, yes those old clicky clack tactile keyboards IBM made. Started another business years back somewhere once the construction business was self sustaining with employees, which is again a computer repair / small time hosting type thing. Once i could easily afford a mac, I made the move, and never looked back. So it raises my eye when I hear about those poor working stiffs that cannot afford a mac. Hell it was not soon after I started playing with windows that I realized it was a cluster f@#k for anything more then end user. IMO , and i assume that whoever actually created a GUI initially for any one of the first initial kernels , may have felt the same.
tommie gorman Posted September 2, 2011 CID Share Posted September 2, 2011 Average Joe. His/her kid needs a computer (or maybe just wants) and he/she has to make it fit into the budget. Which way is he/she gonna swing in todays economy. He/she is gonna probably buy a PC. Is he/she gonna buy a Ford or Lincoln PU just to show what he makes? He's gonna make bills and buy the Ford for less. (I could have said Cadillac and Chevy, but would not be buried in one personally ) Anyway average Joe will save the extra money and buy PC. And thats exactly why more are sold. And to us the most bang for the buck. Not saying a few of you have justified it for your income. That you do over and over. mudmanc4 Posted September 2, 2011 CID Share Posted September 2, 2011 I think I understand , but then again , your saying " us " as in separating people by what you think there financial situation might be. See what I'm saying ? It's been rather rough losing revenue of 300k plus annually, after the fed took over all the banks and stopped construction. I lost close to 30 good guys, moved where I live , sold the harley and the 4 wheeler, on and on. Thats the point , Iv'e adjusted by budget, unlike the government. At any rate , point is , I'm still using a mac, and I'll continue to do so, it might take me a bit longer to get another one if this last one pukes out ( btw macbook pro 15" late 07 still screamin along ) So if I do the math, three years out of one system, for what I paid then , that would equate to roughly this month $700 a year. If i look at my increased production due to this architecture, that number actually goes to the green by many zeros ok. So it is not a status thing , at all, with me at least, I'm sure it might be with others. Hell , I wouldnt have an iPhone , way too much cost , I'm actually cheap believe it or not. Oh lookie what I found , and there all over out there in the gazillions http://www.gainsaver.com/Catalog/Detail.aspx?cICode=43710&CID=103&SID=M9687LL/B&gclid=CP-Q-8Td_qoCFYZrKgodl2ZllQ
CA3LE Posted September 2, 2011 CID Share Posted September 2, 2011 It's going to take me like 4 years to catch up all the reading on this post. From what I've read so far it looks like a couple of people crossed the line. The biggest way that you guys have crossed the line is the language. Especially when talking in a thread that my 11 year-old son started. DUUUUUR! You f****ng r-r-r-retards! I'm leaving this thread online (censored for our younger visitors) as a reminder of how NOT to act in here. ...see Christian, I told you people get passionate about the whole PC vs Mac thing. -- Dang Son, your first discussion went crazy!
