Because the first instant of testing is typically slower due to the requirement to establish a connection. Then there's often a sudden burst which is typically irrelevant to your speed. Speedtest.net is more useful for a total-throughput test. It's often handy for gamers to test what the typical speed of their connection is. (After all, they are using UDP mostly which is connectionless, so there is no establishment of a connection.) Testmy.net uses a pure HTTP based approach, and does not remove any data. Why? I test on both the Dallas server and the Washington DC server because where I'm located, they are similar distances from me. Plus they are east and south of me which covers a large area where I'd likely be routed for typical web surfing.

No, actually there was a bug. Well, not really a bug... a setting on the server was defaulted to the wrong setting. This has been corrected. This was only an issue for the largest test sizes and was affecting all the new servers I just put online. No longer an issue. Sorry about the inconvenience.
