I posted twice to seperate this.I need to know what com port your modem uses & if its external or internal.You need to update the driver for your modem if possible but you may already have the newest driver for your 33.6K. Your distance from the telco also make a major difference in possible speed.You are already close to the max a 33.5K is supposed to do so the tweaks may not help .I would like to see if they will get you over the 33.6K. After I get the information above we may change the com port speed in WIN.INI & hardware manager if it is an external modem. Artic Wolf I will be glad to help if I can.I haven't had a 33.6K modem only a 56k so I will give you tweaks that apply to a 56k.First as soon as you can you need to get a 56k if you are going to use dial-up.I wll try to adjust where possible for the 33.6K.Windows 98 can use most if not all of the settings For ME too.This will keep you busy to start with. Download & install Cablenut;use the ccs file for your OS & connection. I make these adjustments to Cablenut for a custom dial-up file if it doesn't make yours work better you can use the ones that it puts in automatically.On the RWIN use the one of the settings suggested by TCPIP analyzer for RWIN based on MSS & enable windows scaling.On my Cablenut this is Tcp1323Opts set to 1. Check your system at https://www.speedguide.net/ . Select the TCPIP analyzer. If it shows your MTU other than 1500 or your MSS other than 1460 you need to change it to these. I will add this some dial-up's work better with MTU = 576 MSS = 536 so you can try these too if the larger settings slow you down. You can't make these with Cablenut .You need to make them in the registry as in the link at the bottom. In My Computer go to dial-up networking R.click on your connection select properties. GeneralConfigure on the dial-up modem you are usingmaximum speed to 115200.connectionport settingsset your FIFO Buffers to maximum.advanced error control should be checked,compressed data should be checked,use flow control should be checked, Then it depends on the dial-up modem you have Check hardware for an external dial-up modem or an internal with on board controller,Check software for an internal modem that uses the CPU for its controller(this is the majority of internal modems also called winmodems.) For extra settings try W3;S10=50;S25=100 these depend on your specific modem but these work for several. W3 makes the modem report DCE speed instead of DTE speed.S10=50 is a hangup delay that helps keep you connected.Try these last sometimes the ISP won't connect with the extra settings & you have to take them out. Back to the General tab if the phone number you use for dial-up is in the same area code as you are uncheck the use area code box.In the networking tab under advanced options check enable software compression & under allowed network protocols uncheck everything but TCP|IP unless your dial-up uses one of the others to connect. . Open your registry (start - run - type regedit) and change the following registry entries: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesClassNet000X (where X is a number between 1 and 9)there is a value named SLOWNET, change it from 01 to 00. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesVxDCOMBUFF it has a value called Start, change its value from 00 to 01. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesVxDVCACHE, it has a value named Start, change it from 00 to 01. The last 2 are controversial whether the help or not they usually don't hurt performance & sometimes help. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lPriorityControl (if PriorityControl is not there, make the value) - on the right hand side right click and select new DWORD value, name it IrqXPriority (X = Irq assigned to your modem), then right click it and select modify and give it a decimal value of 1. 9. Open your sys.ini file (start - run -sysedit - ME type system.ini) close the boxes until you are at the one with the title C:WINDOWSSYSTEM.INI, under [386enh] add the line ComXXIrqXXbuffer=4096, XX=Com port your modem is on and Irq assigned to your modem, it should look like Com03Irq07buffer=4096. Then select file - save and reboot to take effect. I use 115200 but try the 4096 first. You can check these 2 links they are for 98 or ME you may need the patch in one of them to enable windows scaling. A few other questions What does the cable from the splitter that is not connected to your modem go to? Is the splitter for television signal?I also would use as good a cable as I could get to run over a roof .Can you find a better route? At least under the house eves to protect the cable as much as possible.

I use Cablenut for a lot of settings but I set my MTU in the registry .I prefer it that way I set the PMTU discovery in Cablenut to 0(zero).

I have AVG free & I'm satisfied with it .I have tested virus free for months.If you want to check with Kaspersky you can DL the online scanner below & run the scan.It didn't find any virus in my OS so I guess AVG has been keeping them out of my OS. I would still like to know if anyone has had a simular problem with Sygate as the one I started this topic with & if they found a way to correct it.

I tried the KAV & had problems with it .Maybe the problem was between it & Sygate. Agnitum Outpost Firewall seems to work well it just lacks some of the bells & whistles like backtrace for example. btw I do use Kaspersky's online beta virus scan it has never found a virus in my OS but thats what I want it to report because that means I am keeping them out.

rayray909 I didn't have any problem getting on the internet Or sygate blocking everything.Mine worked correctly for about 10 months then it was like all its functions were removed & it still could'nt be installed again even with a new DL of the software.It was like having no firewall. The free version doesn't expire if its for personal home use.The 30 days is only if you want a registered version with tech support.

I'm not sure about what firewall & AV to run but I thnk you are going to need more RAM.

I think it was newer but a freind had an old Zenith console TV with a zoom feature.

I had Sygate installed for about a year with no problems until this happened.I would install Sygate again because I like some of its features. I just wanted to see if anyone had the same problem.

I recently had a problem with Sygate Personal Firewall (free).It stopped putting its icon in the task bar.It also would not execute from start programs or from Program files.It was like it was no longer in the system.So I uninstalled it DLed the latest version & installed it .It still did the same thing.I then uninstalled the new Sygate & DLed an older Version from a suggestion in the Sygate Forum It did the same as the newer DL.So I gave up on it & installed Agnitum Outpost Firewall. It installed correctly & works .I tested it with Sheilds UP & it is stealth on all ports so I'm protected. I just wanted to post this to see if anyone else had any simular problems with Sygate. BTW the Sygate forum wasn't any help they didn't respond to my post.

You hit that nail on the head.It was several months ago when I first DLed Easy Cleaner I ran the duplicate files option & thought I was deleting just duplicate files so what would be the harm in cleaning the HD up some.I ended up reformatting because the OS needed some of the files in both places. Easy Cleaner is a good program though I use some of it everyday.Just the duplicate files is for experts.The unnessary files option is usually just junk you can get rid of.

Hey all: Just a word of caution .If you use Easy Cleaners duplicate file option you had better know what you are doing.Make sure any "duplicate files" it finds are not needed where they are before deleting them.Unless you like to reformat.

Hyperspace; On the Kerio firewall I think it works like this you get to try the full function version for 30 days.Then you have to buy & register it to keep the full function version.If you don't want to buy it then it turns into the more limited function free home version.I don't have the Kerio firewall but I have checked it out & I beleive that is the way it works.

I use it with dial-up it shows the same as Hyperspace's test Tru Stealth..As far as I can tell it is a clean site .

Looks good added to favorites also.I will check out some of the software there as I have time.

You have to go to a site like tinypic.com or imageshack or photobucket.Do the free registration.then convert the picture or sig you want to use to code there.Then copy the code (I put mine in a note pad & save to MY Documents in case I need it again.) then paste the code in the signature box in your profile. Below is a code sig I will alter the code so you can see what it looks like if I don't all you will see is the sig.This code won't work as a sig with it altered but it will let you see aproxamately what you need.

php the program did seem to work better every thing timed out as expected .The check.log was on my desktop screen if thats where you intended it to be.It was not in my C: directory.
