Orignal_Cronicus : I didn't think you were trying to power through the battery port.I don't think cak46 did either what he meant was the batteries are recharged from the DC imput .If there is no voltage regulator on the power supply you are using the batteries will over charge :Heat up & expand & burst open probably not literally explode with a bang.If you were trying to power through the battery port I doubt a DC transformer would have enough power to run the laptop with the battery removed. But if you just plugged in the unregulated power supply when you were using the laptop & watched it for excess heat in the battery area I don't think you would have a problem. Provided you get the positive & negative wired correctly. peepnklown : Considering the quote below I don't think he wants to spend much money on this laptop.

Little help for an inexperienced broadbander?
cholla replied to FlailSpound's topic in Make it Faster...
FlailSpound : First glad to see your speed improved with the ethernet hook up. I will let someone correct me but there are caps on your connection if there weren't you would only be limited by your own equipment. -
newguy : Try the fix in these ms articles. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=193637 This one is for XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825826

Orignal_Cronicus : Your partly right 20v dc @ 3.5a is the same.Does the laptop have 3 pins on the power imput? If it does my guess is this is a Voltage regulator(or something simular) to the origional power supply. That turns down the voltage when the laptop is not in use so its cooler. My other guess is it a fuse of some type inside the origional type power supply. But if you know which is the + & - I think you could use a regular transformer .I would just unplug the power to the laptop when you are not using it. I could be wrong like you said someone that knows needs to post.

JustinPO : Basically what FallowEarth is having you do is a through power cycle..You should have unpluged any power cords or power supplies to everything but the PC & monitor when doing this.Bring up means turn back on (plug the power back in). Then the wait is to let the modem come completly back on; then the same for the router; then start your PC

Randon: Forget about the spybot disk for now.I am just going to assume that she doesn't have the origional disk so going to recovery is probably not going to be possible. At least if it can be accessed another way I don't know how. After you open the case & look for loose RAM or anything that looks loose or broken.Try to remove the RAM stick (VERY CAREFULLY) if you don't feel comfortable doing that don't for now. Then make sure the RAM feels tight in its socket. You need to make sure the PC is off & ground yourself to the chassis to something metal in it before touching the RAM stick. If ther doesn't seem to be anything wrong put the case back togather. Since you probably won't have an origional instalation disk the best thing to do would be to buy an XP home edition ,install it, & loose any data in the laptop. That being said if you still want to try to use it with the windows 2000 in it.Then read my post before this one .You will need a PC that you can connect to the internet with.Download the win 98 start up disk so you can get into DOS & maybe run the FixMBR read the MS link I put in about this. You will also need to DL the setup disks from the link so you can try them.I'm not sure just how these work. You are going to need to get into DOS unless the setup disks help you use recovery.Read the links in my last post they should tell you how to do some of this.

Little help for an inexperienced broadbander?
cholla replied to FlailSpound's topic in Make it Faster...
FlailSpound: It always helps to post the speed you are paying for.The reason you might be at 50% of your hosts speed is your host has faster connections they sell.So 50% of your hosts speed could be good for your connection.I haven't used a usb to connect a modem everything I read says they slow you down.Ethernet should be better. -
Br26 :You're last DL test is pretty good. You ask will all that help.A lot of the tweaks are pretty standard for maximizing dial-up.You should try a larger test & test several times to see what your average is.Pay attention when you do the MTU tweaks because it depends on your ISP whether you should use 1500 or 576 all using the wrong one will do is slow you down & you will need to change to the other one. When you DL cablenut choose the ccs file for 56K & your

Br26 : Check out my post here.Even if your speed seems bad it might be as fast as you will get .A lot depends on your distance from the Telco you can call your phone co & see what the distance of your line is.If it 9000 ft or less you will probably get better speed for every 6000 ft after that there should be a load coil on the line .these are for voice quality but are data killers so for every one you slow down some. https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=5856.msg55526#msg55526 This is a link to a hyperterminal test if you can do it every drop in the graph should be a load coil on the line. https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=4277.0

Randon : A reformat is basically a new install. You may lose some or all of any stored information or programs on the hard drive. It will give you a new clean windows. But I have some other things to try first.I had to find some information on Windows 2000 it does have some simularities to XP.First we need to get it stable enough to not shut down & reboot continously. If you are unable to start your computer, you can run the Recovery Console from your Windows 2000 Setup disks, or from the Windows 2000 Professional CD (if you can start your computer from your CD drive). You may have to go into the BIOS & select CDROM as the primary start. In this link It shows more on using Recovery. Read & try the fixboot &fixmbr you will find in the link. http://www.usbfireinfo.com/windowsnetworking/regusers/wxprcons.htm The Windows 98 boot disk might let you do some DOS commands if the above doesn't help. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm There are also setup disks for 2000 & a make boot disk if you can download them with another PC. The link below gives information in using SFC in windows 2000 .If you can get to a command prompt even the one with the 98 startup disk. When you use it C: may not be the hard drive letter test D: &E: Test the letter by typing dir /w/p by each drive letter this will give you the directory of that drive. You need to find the regular C: directory of your hard drive. You change the drive letters in DOS by typing the new letter followed by a colon & hitting enter.Example A:>C: try to go to windows if C: or the letter of your hard drive doesn't have SFC /scannow. Example C:>cdwindows http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;222471 It wouldn't hurt to check this too.

69 RAT: I don't know if the problem could be in the MBR .I am putting in some links on the MBR & fixing it.I thought it might be something to check because the error is starting before your OS. http://www.ntfs.com/mbr-damaged.htm This link is to make a boot disk that will bypass your typical start up boot files. http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips14.html http://mbrwiz.bigr.net:8092/ This is a MBR wizard download & there is some information on using it at the site.

Hi Randon Good to hear from you .I thought in the start of the topic you could get into safe mode with the laptop.I 'm not as good with XP since I don't have it.She should try to uninstall it anyway. Sometimes with a bad download the uninstall doesn't work correctly either & you end up with an incomplete uninstall.I meant when you

69 RAT: I've found a few things useful at Doug's site I use a simular patch from their to fix the help on ME.Thats why I thought it might help you. The site below has some information on XP &DOS The information at the site on windows 2000 & dos looked interesting becasuse it discussed it a little about the NTS file system .Some of this I am trying to learn & it still over my head But it looked useful. http://malektips.com/windows_xp_and_dos_help_and_tips.html I will check out the link at elder geeks.I have been to that site before also.

69 RAT : You might check this out to see if it will fix your blank help(system information screen) http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fixwinxphelp.htm cak46 I've read you can go to DOS in XP with aWindows 98 start up disk I don't know because I don't have a way to test it.

cak46 I thought it might be a good idea to ask 99 RAT about the start of the problem again. So if he just ended processes they should have automatically came back on.It doesn't look like it worked that way.Unless he did disable or delete them some way guess we need to find out if he just ended processes or did more.Would ending processes ever cause the 60 second shutdown warning & shut down in XP? Or would it take more to do that(like disabling or deleting.) I know its not the same as his network connections window but his network adapter list looked long to me. Just some thoughts on this to see if this might lead you in a direction to find the problem.

69 RAT ; Just to refresh my memory didn't the lsass.exe problem begin with the install of Silent Hunter 3?

billybob12345 I'm guessing my PC doesn't have a temp sensor.Or it doesn't work.It could be turned off somewhere in the BIOS I will have to look.Since I'm not overclocking I doubt if my PC is overheating. On your friends PC build sounds like he's doing it the right way I didn't think he was going to build his own boards .
