A good hydraulic press should flatten it well.Or if you can't do that find a street crew & let the roller go over it a few times

Of course it could be the picture the government wants us to see & not really Area 51. Unless that concept is too conspiracy theory.

netmasta I waited for the speed window. The results were close to what MyVitalAgent measured .I didn't average the fractional amount with dialup.FF was slightly faster. IE 62 to 68 seconds FF 60 to 63 seconds

VanBuren: edited in my post above but you added settings in the download & latency boxes & I didn't.Artic Wolf would be 33.6K on the DL & I don't know what his latency would be.Anyway I sure don't use RWIN that small for my 56K.The reason I don't is pages load faster with a larger RWIN at least on my OS & connection.I think this might be because the internet is now setup best for broadband & so are the pages being sent. The larger RWIN seems to work better for loading pages now.

This was with my dialup using MyVitalAgent program to time the test. The test did not have its own timer. If I missed the timer you can let me know.Or there is another way you timed the test.I don't know why the size was slightly different but the difference is small. 903.1KB in 1 minute IE 891KB in 1 minute FF

VanBuren : I tried the 1372 in the calculator it showed the receive window settings as 0(zero) which can't be correct.Edit I did this with Enter MTU on the drop down & I didn't put anything in the DL or latency boxes. When I did it with the 56K drop down it did give RWIN settings. ArcticWolf :

Where Were You or What Were You Doing on 9/11/2001?
cholla replied to monsnet2k8's topic in General Discussion
I was watching the News that morning .They were interveiwing the doorman at the hotel that was in between the towers.Only one plane had hit the first tower at that time. The doorman & the reporter thought it was a small private jet that had hit the tower.I was watching the news live when the second plane flew into the second tower.I have always wondered if the reporter & doorman left in time before they collapsed. -
69 RAT I'm glad I was some help But I'm giving the real credit to you & cak46 .You two worked long & hard on this.I don't blame you for calling it enough. It is too bad the fix wasn't found.

Swimmer the sandra sisoft2005 looked like a good program so I checked it out.Un fortunatly it is for windows 2000 & newer. So it won't help Artic Wolf with 98 or me with ME.btw there is an update if you don't have it.

ArcticWolf Is the change being made in the registry from 1500 to 1400?Or do you use some software that changes the MTU?In cablenut do you have the PMTU discovery set to 0 & size/small /medium/large blank? It could be your ISP limiting to 1400. I can't use the ping function because my ISP blocks ping. But there is a methode for setting the correct MTU for your OS using MSDOS &ping.I used this methode at my old ISP that allowed ping.I did find it sometimes varried I don't know why. At the prompt in MSDOS type ping your ISP -f -l your MTU IT will look like this ping aol.com -f -l 1500 Keep going lower with the MTU until the packets no longer fragment. The l is a small L not a capitol i. You can use any number like 1472 or 576 the highest it can go without fragmenting is your max MTU. The aol.com I used is assuming that is correct for aol if you know the address of your ISP is different use that one.Or the numerical address. Once you have found it use that for your MTU.

Windows doesn't do a very good job of identifying your modem. The best information would be in the control panel modemdiagnosticsmore information highlight your modem (you have to be offline to access this) .System information may tell you some more. then go to the site in the link below. If you will get as many serial numbers off your modem chips as you can find first it will help when you get to the site.If there is software to do the identification I would like to know it too.I did mine manually & went to this site. http://www.modem-help.com/

Heres links to a couple of tests when my dial up was getting better speed. If you are interested http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1739.msg17434#msg17434 http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1582.msg16040#msg16040

amc11890 I have dial-up I usually get faster than 30K In theory you can't get above 53K.I used to get faster but that suddenly stopped. My ISP says they don't cap dial-up.I will see if I can find some of my old posts & link you there.I have my OS about as tweked for dial-up as I can.

Supreme1 Have you had your case off recently? If you have it may have some kind of security you need to reset.

Hey Artic Wolf When you tried my settings was this with the registry settings also?If you only did the Cablenut settings it wouldnt work very well.Which MTU worked best for you 576 or 1500? On the test at Broadband reports did it show window scaling enabled? You can try this in your win.ini under [ports]

I posted twice to seperate this.I need to know what com port your modem uses & if its external or internal. You need to update the driver for your modem if possible but you may already have the newest driver for your 33.6K. Your distance from the telco also make a major difference in possible speed. You are already close to the max a 33.5K is supposed to do so the tweaks may not help .I would like to see if they will get you over the 33.6K. After I get the information above we may change the com port speed in WIN.INI & hardware manager if it is an external modem. I wiil put a screen shot of my cablenut settings you may have to click on the link at the bottom of the Screen shot.DL & open it to veiw it larger so you can read it http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=5673.0;attach=2503

Artic Wolf I will be glad to help if I can.I haven't had a 33.6K modem only a 56k so I will give you tweaks that apply to a 56k.First as soon as you can you need to get a 56k if you are going to use dial-up.I wll try to adjust where possible for the 33.6K.Windows 98 can use most if not all of the settings For ME too. This will keep you busy to start with. Download & install Cablenut;use the ccs file for your OS & connection. I make these adjustments to Cablenut for a custom dial-up file if it doesn't make yours work better you can use the ones that it puts in automatically. On the RWIN use the one of the settings suggested by TCPIP analyzer for RWIN based on MSS & enable windows scaling. On my Cablenut this is Tcp1323Opts set to 1. Check your system at https://www.speedguide.net/ . Select the TCPIP analyzer. If it shows your MTU other than 1500 or your MSS other than 1460 you need to change it to these. I will add this some dial-up's work better with MTU = 576 MSS = 536 so you can try these too if the larger settings slow you down. You can't make these with Cablenut .You need to make them in the registry as in the link at the bottom. In My Computer go to dial-up networking R.click on your connection select properties. GeneralConfigure on the dial-up modem you are usingmaximum speed to 115200.connectionport settingsset your FIFO Buffers to maximum.advanced error control should be checked, compressed data should be checked, use flow control should be checked, Then it depends on the dial-up modem you have Check hardware for an external dial-up modem or an internal with on board controller,Check software for an internal modem that uses the CPU for its controller(this is the majority of internal modems also called winmodems.) For extra settings try W3;S10=50;S25=100 these depend on your specific modem but these work for several. W3 makes the modem report DCE speed instead of DTE speed.S10=50 is a hangup delay that helps keep you connected.Try these last sometimes the ISP won't connect with the extra settings & you have to take them out. Back to the General tab if the phone number you use for dial-up is in the same area code as you are uncheck the use area code box.In the networking tab under advanced options check enable software compression & under allowed network protocols uncheck everything but TCP|IP unless your dial-up uses one of the others to connect. . Open your registry (start - run - type regedit) and change the following registry entries: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesClassNet000X (where X is a number between 1 and 9)there is a value named SLOWNET, change it from 01 to 00. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesVxDCOMBUFF it has a value called Start, change its value from 00 to 01. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesVxDVCACHE, it has a value named Start, change it from 00 to 01. The last 2 are controversial whether the help or not they usually don't hurt performance & sometimes help. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lPriorityControl (if PriorityControl is not there, make the value) - on the right hand side right click and select new DWORD value, name it IrqXPriority (X = Irq assigned to your modem), then right click it and select modify and give it a decimal value of 1. 9. Open your sys.ini file (start - run -sysedit - ME type system.ini) close the boxes until you are at the one with the title C:WINDOWSSYSTEM.INI, under [386enh] add the line ComXXIrqXXbuffer=4096, XX=Com port your modem is on and Irq assigned to your modem, it should look like Com03Irq07buffer=4096. Then select file - save and reboot to take effect. I use 115200 but try the 4096 first. You can check these 2 links they are for 98 or ME you may need the patch in one of them to enable windows scaling. The one below is to give you higher connection settings for your modem. With a 33.6 you may not be able to use over 57600 & have a stable connection Try 115200 next I use 230400 but I have a 56K. https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1772.0 This is for the registry tweaks most are for MTU settings. There are 2 different MTU settings above you need to use the one that works best for your connection.(576 or 1500) & the MSS that goes with it. https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1633.0

A few other questions What does the cable from the splitter that is not connected to your modem go to? Is the splitter for television signal?I also would use as good a cable as I could get to run over a roof .Can you find a better route? At least under the house eves to protect the cable as much as possible.

I use Cablenut for a lot of settings but I set my MTU in the registry .I prefer it that way I set the PMTU discovery in Cablenut to 0(zero).

Is AVG free edition a good choice for antivirus?
cholla replied to destructionfever's topic in General Discussion
I have AVG free & I'm satisfied with it .I have tested virus free for months. If you want to check with Kaspersky you can DL the online scanner below & run the scan.It didn't find any virus in my OS so I guess AVG has been keeping them out of my OS. Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner Beta version 5.0.50.0 Link to install the online scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/beta?product=161744315
