cholla replied to Cobra's topic in General Discussion
Cobra : I use dial-up & so far I haven't had any of the sigs cause me a noticeable problem. Some pictures posted do sometimes load slowly. But the sigs with text do not seem to slow my speed down.Just thought you might want this info. Cholla -

dlewis23: Thats what I said: Winmodem=software modem=controllerless modem All use OS CPU for control Hardware modem= on board controler modem =promodem(short for processor modem) less CPU use for modem However my personal experience my internal software modem is faster than my external hardware modem it just uses the CPU more. This is not the case for everyone.

Just thought I would say my g-mail is working fine.I did have a problem getting it one day but this was OK by the next day it has been fine since. Cholla

peepnklown: Yes I know that a controlerless software modem is sometimes called a WinModem but the modem manufacturers usually don't use this term.I just wanted to make sure 24kbps was looking for a hardware(on board controller modem) The link had limited information on the modem. You can get higher speeds if your ISP supports V.90 standards too. The main difference is the call on hold features. The modem he is looking at is a hardware modem I didn't research it much further.I have heard good things about Zoom modems .I would at least check out theirs.Diamond pioneered the shotgun technology but they went out of business for awhile.I'm not sure they are the same now. 24kbps are you using a serial or usb to connect the modem to your PC?
-
There are several things to consider your link doesn't give enough information.Like does this modem have its own processor or does it use your CPU.I have read other posts & at least some of the time you use a bonded or shotgun connection. If you use the shotgun methode you should get a matched pair of modems that are made for this. With their own processors if possible.

Mr. Dude & all; I think he was just really trying to thank everyone for the help with the caps. Mr.Dude you basically did what REH suggested in the first place download Lavasoft Adaware & run it in safe mode. I later suggested more when I thought you had already done this without success.I glad it worked for you.
-
Mr. Dude : Since you already have the aurora software on your PC I would download the uninstall program & run it . At this point I wouldn't use the add/remove program if you do this sometimes this makes an uninstall program not work. So try the uninstall program first. Have you tried the steps I put in my previous post? Cholla

Mr. Dude : I don't have XP I have ME.I had a simular problem but I only had 2 viruses my anti-avius program wouldn't remove in regular mode.I went to their forum & got the instructions that I am giving you.My anti-virus is AVG but I don't see why this wouldn't work withanother av program.First you need two programs(freeware) you can download they are Stinger &CW Shredder.then start your system in safe mode. All this will be done in safe mode.Run your AV let it clean what it can,run CW Shredder,Run Stinger, then run your anti spyware program clean what it finds.Restart your PC to normal mode run your AV program to see if it finds any more viruses .In my case this cleaned them out.Maybe this would work for you.If not you could try AVG anti-virus program & follow the instructions again.

24Kbps : What is a bonded dial up test? I would like to know.On the wiring pretty simple replace it.Try CAT 3 24g to 18g telephone cable you might go CAT 5 if you have EMI problems. If you don't know what I'm saying do some web surfing to find out there is plenty of info on this on the web. Cholla

This is a data line quality test ran from Hyperterminal. It is for dial-up but might work for DSL.I would appreciate it if some one would let me know if it will work for DSL.It is a SBC test.I don't know if it will work if you don't have an SBC phone line I would like someone to let me know this also. You need to NOT be logged into your internet connection to use Hyperterminal.I'm sure some already know this but i put that in for those that didn't.

dn0 : I heard about it yesterday on the news.I looked up my house too.Last night I looked at the Grand Canyon for awhile. I understand it has been available for awhile as a shareware program called Keyhole but now its free. Cholla This is the short cut : http://maps.google.com/ You still need to select satellite once there.

Barcino : I don't know it depends on what the correct distance is & if Verizon offers 3MB at that distance. If they contract to sell you that speed you should be able to get close to it any way.If they think the distance is to far they won't sell you the service.Someone with DSL may be able to give you a better awnser. If you were really 4 miles I don't think you could get any kind of DSL. Cholla
-
Barcino : I used the DSL reports calculator It said I was 16000 ft from the telco. This was wrong when I called my phone company they said my line is 26400 ft from them.So a good start is to actually call your phone company & see what they say the distance is.If your DSL uses a different line then you need to call the company whose line it is to find out the distance. Then find out which company in your area can connect the shortest DSL capable line to you.If your telco is really right down the street not just their business office then you should definately have a shorter line than 4 miles. From what I have read about DSL somewhere between 16000 & 18000 is the maximum distance.16000 divided by 5280=3.03 miles so you probably couldn't be 4 miles & get DSL .So do some research & find out. Cholla Thanks php I made the corection in this post

Barcino: If you do some research in your location there are sometimes ways to get a closer line to the CO.these may cost you though. There are dedicated lines in some areas ,A data only second line.remote terminals .If none of these are available in your area you may have more than one phone company

cholla replied to dman58's topic in General Discussion
dman58: Van Buren posted a good list in this link below https://testmy.net/forum/index.php/topic,2097.msg4621.html#msg4621 Lower in this same post I added a link to a javacool program called spyware blaster. So I think this will be a good guide. Cholla -
Scared of heights? lol...check this out then!
cholla replied to Indestructable's topic in General Discussion
Indestructable : I was just giving the height of the eiffle tower . That's probably higher than they let you go I can't say since I haven't been there. You know like from the blinking red light that keeps airplanes from hitting it(I don't know if it actually has one of these ).Anywhere they let you go could be called an observation deck. Cholla -

pitbull481 : Nice pics . Just a little info the Eiffle tower is 986ft.I think this would be from the top not the observation deck. The Strasphere Tower in Las Vegas is 1,081 ft. from the top of the Big Shot ride.I have ridden the Big Shot so I am not afraid of heights. The Big Shot is a good ride but over too fast & you can't take a camera on it .They won't let you take anything loose for the safety of people below the tower. I plead guilty Stank_Ho I'm obnoxious at least part of the time. What do you call stirring things up a little if not flaming. How about singeing then (that's not singing mispelled) thats a step or two below flaming. It keeps things from being dull though. Cholla -
