Finally Vista Requirements anounced for hardware providors..
ghostmaster replied to Swimmer's topic in General Discussion
I heard that Vista has taken a kind of "sudo" approach like linux and doesnt have all the system accounts like XP does....hopefully that will increase security a lot... -
DW 7000 blocking VPN completely (not just slow)
ghostmaster replied to fuzzyjello's topic in DW7000 Information
The professional version of Dway on a DW7000 modem does NOT open up any ports. All it does is give higher speeds. For PPTP to work with dway you MUST have static IP. It does cost 30 bucks a month more. Dway isn't as simple as DSL, if it were, you wouldn't have as many problems. The DW7000 modem is self-hosted, meaning that acts as a limited router. It hands out private IPs to clients, and does not forward any ports with consumer, or professional (dynamic) service plans. I would consider using either SSH, or Hamachi. Bitvise makes an easy to use zero config SSH server for windows that you can try, and a free client called tunnelier that is a piece of cake to use. It has one touch buttons for secure-telnet, RDP, and S-FTP. It's just great! I would recommend this because SSH works very well on Direcway. PPTP does not work well at all even with the static IP. I used to try to use it, and I couldn't map drives or anything without it timing out. Try the Bitvise SSH server, and you won't be dissapointed. Plus you won't need the static IP. -
DW 7000 blocking VPN completely (not just slow)
ghostmaster replied to fuzzyjello's topic in DW7000 Information
Welcome to the forum Fuzzy Most likely he will need a "static IP" from Dway for most VPNs to work. This opens up all ports. If he is on a standard Dway connection, the DW7000 modem disrupts the connection. Also, if he already has the Static IP, he must configure it on the client. The DW7000 modem will hand out private addresses unless you set it up manually on the client. What type of VPN is this? (IPSec, SSH, SSL)? Hope this helps... -
Has hughes always been in control? Nope....I think ole Murdoch had a big say in it until Skyterra bought 50% last year, and finished the purchase this year.....

High Failed Transmissions-DW7000
ghostmaster replied to josephthomas's topic in HughesNet (DIRECWAY)
2 things to check.... Make sure your transmitter is grounded! there should be a screw labed GND on it, and a copper wire running from it to the ground. If not, static will build up on the transmitter and cause this problem. 2nd, there is a manufactuing defect on some new installs, where water will build up in the feed horn window. Just go to the dish and look at the LNB. If there is water, that is/or is another problem that a DWAY tech will need to fix. -
The "interesting" thing about all of this, is that Hughes is getting ready to become a public company, so Ive heard. If that is true, I would expect a great increase in service, because they will have stockholders to answer to. I don't think DirecTV put the money that needed to go into Direcway in to it. That's why it wasn't profitable, and that's why service was kinda bad. With the changes, I think, or hope rather that we will see more improvements. (ESPECIALLY IN CUSTOMER SERVCE...the need it the most there)

Goodbye DirecWay, Hello HughesNet (Big News...well sorta)
ghostmaster replied to a topic in General Discussion
If you did not get the email about the hughesnet mail switchover... go to: http://customercare.myhughesnet.com sign in with your old info go to the the email options then change your password.... Then browse to http://mail.hughes.net sign in, and your account will begin to convert...with your email transferring to the new account. SkyTerra bought out Hughes(DirecWay) from DirecTV. In the deal, Hughes did not retain the rights to the Direcway name....therefore we have "Hughesnet" Hughes is getting ready to become a "public" company. With that in mind, I think they will start changing their ways because they will have stock holders to answer to! -

Have you converted your account properly yet? If you just changed the settings in your mail program it will not work. When setting up your email program, you must also use the full username for the login credentials. Instead of: username password You need: [email protected] password I have no problem accessing the email with outlook, and ive heard of others using Thunderbird. -
Sometimes other factors can affect your speed test results other than the cache. Such as a firewall, antivirus, or any other software. And sometimes the speed tests cough and give a bad result. Before we scream "cached" we should remember these things. on the other hand....showing 55Mbps on a cable connection should throw up a red flag..........................................................................................................

Forced to purchase a new dish?
ghostmaster replied to majicaldreemer's topic in HughesNet (DIRECWAY)
They aren't going to make everyone purchase new systems....they would lose all of their customers... If you are trying to re-commission a DW4000 system, you are out of luck. They are stopping that. If you have a DW6000 or above system, you shouldn't have a problem.... -

Did this happen to be a DW4000 system? -
aaaahhhhhh........ok....sense is being made now... can you post your number of failed transmissions? That way we can better determine some problems... Also post what sat and transponder your are on......
-
as Peter Griffin said when he was trying to make money by pretending to be deaf and passing out flyers... UM....WHAT!?!?!??

3000 systems were hybrid dial return systems, therefore there was no transmitter. Most of the grounding issues come from the transmitter not being grounded. If not grounded, it will build up static and you will see severely degraded service.

Speeds for the Pro Plan are "up to" 1.0Mbps(1000Kbps) So that is about the best you will get, but you will get occasional speed bursts that go a little above that.

8000 seems to be the going number per transponder. The main problem is with equipment at the NOC not being able to handle all the traffic. I know the feeling. Im on AMC9 1370, which is the current hell hole transponder. Speeds are dropping to 275Kbps at night now, and the slowdown lasts until 12:00am.

I love the dd-wrt. They don't recommend going over 70 with it.
-
I wouldn't go over 70. Mine is set at 60. NO heat problems and it is very stable....I would also use the autoconfig to let it pick the best channel....

You may indeed have a bad cable or transmitter also, with that amount of failed transmissions. Have your husband check the grounding, and make sure all the cables are tight. Another issue may be water in the feedhorn. There are several instances of this. You need to tell direcway that your number of failed transmissions are higher than the number of successful ones. That might get the ball rolling on then giving you real help.
