Well they didn't exactly just change their name this time. When they were bought from DirecTV, they did not acquire the rights to the name "Direcway". One thing is for sure, complaints have gone down since the change....

Microsoft Scanning your computer for piracy
ghostmaster replied to dlewis23's topic in General Discussion
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16832110001 What about MAC? Retail Mac os will run about 110. Not to mention the fact that you have to run it on Mac hardware. At least when you buy a license for XP, you can put it on almost anything, including a Mac now. At ECU, faculty and staff can buy XP Pro for 20 bucks, and students can buy for 35. Staff can buy office for 35 bucks, and students can for 65. I think its pretty generous of Microsoft to drop these huge discounts for us. -
You cannot run the XP setup in Microsoft DOS, as XP does not use DOS like windows 98 and windows 95 did. You need to download the disks that Coknuk linked you to in order to install, if your XP disk is not bootable.

When you have to cycle a satellite (mainly direcway) modem, it's usually for 1 of 2 reasons. One, to discharge static, and 2, to reconnect to the web acceleration servers at the NOC, which usually resolves "page cannot be displayed" erros and broken images. If the transmitter is propery grounded, you usually won't have to restart the modem for grounding.

An MD5 is a type of checksum to check the validity of a file. You can hash files with an MD5 checksum, and then give a person the key, so that when you send them the file, they can run the checksum on it and make sure it hasn't been changed or corrupted.

Does this look like a bad graphics card to you?
ghostmaster replied to wyantm06's topic in General Discussion
Is it a NVIDIA card? If so, reinstall the driver from NVIDIA's website. One of those last Windows Updates has a conflict with NVIDIA's drivers. http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopics/security/holes/story/0,10801,110755,00.html?source=NLT_PM&nid=110755 -
If you are installing XP you shouldn't need a boot disk, unless your computer won't boot a CD. The XP CD is bootable. During installation you will get the oportunity to delete all of your partitions and install XP in a new single partition. When you put in the XP disk, reboot the computer, and if it is setup right, you will see a prompt that says "press any key to boot CD", just press any key and follow the on screen steps.

Might want to visit http://www.dslreports.com/forum/sat and click on the wild blue tab. They have a lot of WB experts there. From what I understand, there are a few beams that are having slow uploads.

windows desktop won't load normally after shutdown
ghostmaster replied to mmpcsnet's topic in Networking and Hardware
Yeah that sounds like a windows update video driver. Look up what video driver you need and download it. The happens especially with Nvidia cards when drivers are downloaded from windows update.... -

So im playing around with Mepis, and right now Im quite impressed. I like it much better than Ubuntu or Fedora 5. I also like the way you install it. It boots to a live CD, you can try it, and if you like it, there is an icon on the desktop that starts the install program and it's all GUI right there on the live CD. Installs really fast has a great intuitive design. It's the most user friendly distro I've ever used. From what I understand, it's basically Debian with a custom frontend. Anyone else use it? What do you like or dislike about it?
