That's not really a burst. Some users consistently see speeds like that. (yes even on a 6000) You are just lucky enough to be on a really good segment of your transponder. That's one reason you need the 12k test to be the most accurate. Dway is a bursty connection to start with. I can watch my bandwidth monitor jump from 1500Kbps to 300Kbps and back up to 1600Kbps all in a matter of 3 seconds. If you are getting more high download bursts than low one's, then your average for the test will be higher. That's why larger tests are always more accurate because there is a larger test sample.

Im a linux newb myself, and I haven't had much time to use it. Ive had a few redhat classes, and I've never used sudo before I tried Kubuntu. Therefore, I did not like sudo because I didn't understand it. After reading more about it, I think it's a good idea. Im not big on Linux or Unix yet because I havn't had to administer it before. So take my earlier comments with a grain of salt....

Don't get too excited...all my tests are coming in inaccurately high tonight.... EDIT: Well my last test just came in accurately...maybe its back to normal now...

No bursting...tests are not accurate right now. I watched my bandwidth meter run at 1100Kbps, while the test resulted in 1650Kbps....

Writing Program Need A Bit of Info Though
ghostmaster replied to lan_darklord's topic in HughesNet (DIRECWAY)
That is correct.....rolling 4 hour period.....the whole bucket theory doesn't fit anymore, at least it doesn't for me.... And I think it's realtime checking, so at 4:30pm...anything before 12:30pm would be dismissed.....at 4:31pm, anything before 12:31pm would be dismissed and so on... -
The version of Ubuntu I used was Kubuntu actually, maybe that is why it was so confusing. If so, my apologies to all the linux radicals out there, and I'll try the Ubuntu original next time. I still prefer ye olde Red Hat/Fedora anyways. (Although lately it's a bit bloated) Most of the linux people I know swear by "Slackware", but I fail to understand why.

I tried Ubuntu and thought it was aweful. First, its too user friendly, in that it uses "sudo" code. Meaning that you can't login as root to do command line stuff, unless you disable "sudo" mode. It's really flashy and all, and has a nice interface, but I don't like the functionality of it. Yes you can network between the 2 if you want, but you will need to setup Samba to do so. If you have a powerfull enough computer, I would get a copy of VMWare, and use it to run Ubuntu on your Windows XP machine. That way, if you don't like it, you can just dump it without having to reinstall windows!

If im not mistaken, the 7740 is NOT going to be availiable to US customers. So the whole conspiracy theory about VOIP might be a moot point. Angela, they will probably give you a credit on your account for the poor uploads. The only thing I can say is be nice, but be vigilant when you call!
-
Is there any reason that you wanted Vonage as opposed to landline/cellular? I have no idea what the problem is. The main problem is that the DW7000 was rushed into the market, and DWAY wasn't prepared for the increase and shift in customer base. So they are having to work out all the bugs. As for VOIP, I can't tell you which one to choose, mainly because I don't use VOIP. The best answer I can give you is to post a thread on http://www.dslreports.com/sat They are lots of experienced DWAY users there, who can help you with the VOIP stuff.

Don't worry. They ARE slow at fixing things, but they'll get it back up. When it is running correctly, you should get that 200kbps. But, that is not going to fix the vonage problem you had in the other thread. Vonage just doesn't work with dway anymore, and they aren't going to fix it aparentley. Net2Phone and Crystalvoice do work, as does netzero voice.

Use the 579Kb test for uploads, as it is more accurate for DWay, and it will help us in troubleshooting your problem. The 97Kb test does not give your connection enough time to "warm up" so to speak.

Have Satellite and slow upload speed...
ghostmaster replied to angela641's topic in HughesNet (DIRECWAY)
This topic needs to be moved to the Dway forum... Angela641, do you know what satellite and transponder you are on? You can find out by going to http://192.168.0.1/ and clicking on system info Your satellite will be listed as "longitude" and the transponder will be listed as "frequency". If you are on 83W and 1370, the problem is most likely with DWAY, as many of us on that sat and transponder are having a slow upload speed problem. As far as Vonage is concerned, DUMP IT. If it does work on Dway, it won't work well, and is a well documented issue. Netzero or anything that uses Cystalvoice will work well. I think Net2Phone works well also. Other things to consider: Check your transmission stats, it will be on the http://192.168.0.1/ page, listed as transmission info. If you are getting a lot of tranmission errors, there may be other problems with your setup. -
When the system is working correctly, I get around 650 to 800ms on pings. Average being about 725. Dway exaggerated on the "cut in half" part. But you would notice a nice jump in browsing. My advice is that I wouldn't upgrade until they fixed all the problems, spaceway is launched, or switch to Wild Blue.

Post your fastest speed with Wildblue
ghostmaster replied to andythedrummer's topic in Wildblue / Exceed / ViaSat
By downloading faster, you use more of you FAP bucket. It's really a moot point in this case though. A gain of 100k won't do much against a wildblue FAP bucket..... -

You guys should use the 2992KB tests to get the most accurate results.... -
After reading on DSLreports the "current status" pages, everyone is having much higher speeds. Maybe DWAY finally fixed their crap. Upload are erratic one minute to the next for me...but no trans errors...

Hey Bird Fan, have you tested with IE6 instead of the beta? I get much slower speeds with the beta than I do IE 6.

Lets see what happends tonight.....maybe upgrades? Maybe it just happend?...I can't wait to get home and see how it is.....

Being that the problem is widespread, look for it to be an NOC problem, NOT a satellite problem. You have to remember, those same transmissions have to be recived at the NOC from the Satellite properly, or will have to be retransmitted and count towards trans errors. If the NOC is having trouble, look for high errors. On another note, I was having the same problem, unplugged the modem for about 5 minutes, and cleaned the dish with clorox bathroom cleaner to get off bird crap. Transmission errors virtually gone. Could have been bird crap...could have been long reboot...who knows... One thing you will find is that a lot of problems are at the NOC (GateWays), not usually the satellites.... And in ANY case, DWAY still needs to get THEIR CRAP together...

For those who experience the slowdown....

A download of NVIDA drivers does NOT have the same effect though...this is Weird... -
OK...this is strange... I just took this test. Notice the speed. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 425 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 52 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (server1) Test Time:: Mon Feb 13 20:46:56 EST 2006 Bottom Line:: 8X faster than 56K 1MB download in 19.69 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 47.01 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com) But if I download big driver file for ATI, I get normal speeds. No it wasn't a cached download.... Everyone who slows down, try downloading the 35MB file from ATI and see what speeds you get...

Is LimeWire not opensource? If so, why would they put in spyware that users of the source code would find?
