This is why a site like TestMy.net is so important... without a site like this there would be nobody to call these guys out. People think, "Oh, it's AT&T... they're huge... they HAVE to know what they're talking about." Well, as you can see... they don't. I've said this since the first flash speed test I saw, flash is a terrible protocol to try to benchmark though. I think it's retarded that companies are relying on stuff that that for technical support. It disgusts me because I know that they know this... I think they're doing it on purpose to alleviate stress on their call centers. They need to realize that unhappy customers do cause the phone to stop ringing... but it's because they leave you! Truth is that the truth can hurt sometimes. And if they want to lie to themselves and their customers they're not alone. This BS has become common practice among ISPs. I think they should be required by law to use a third party for speed testing, because of the major conflict of intrest. I think they have the mindset that if you pretend the problem isn't there, maybe it will go away. ... stupid and unfair to customers. Who knows, if you guys keep spreading the word maybe we can change policy. Yeah, that's obviously impossible with your connection.

No problem Nope, the Auto Speed Test is unique to TestMy.net. Even with scripting on your end it's nearly impossible unless the test site wants you to be able to do that. You'd need to be able to automate mouse clicks to get the test started otherwise. Far too much trouble IMO. You could write a bash script that downloads a file from one of their servers and logs the results... sounds like allot of work considering that I've already built the tool you need. --- Although, upcoming versions of the automatic speed test will have the option to test from any server you want. It should be sweet but I bet your problem is resolved by the time I release that update. Thanks for visiting! Tell your friends...

First, welcome to my website. One thing you'll want to do is run a traceroute to the speed test server they give you. It's most likely hosted within their network. They say that this is to eliminate the variable of the other guys server or traceroute.. blah blah.. BS, they probably don't peer very well. The basically have you test on a server within their network and eliminate the variable of... the internet. I mean seriously, how can it be an internet speed test if you're not even extending the connection beyond the host. I think it should be illegal for ISPs to do this to their customers. I think they should be required to use a third party testing site. But it's become common practice, I'm trying to change this. You may want to run a test on the Washington D.C. server. See if your results vary. http://dc.testmy.net (this will change your default server to DC, links to change back are on the test pages... or clear your cookies) I have very powerful servers and one of the most well connected hosts in the world. Chances are, TDS is just not delivering and hiding the fact with the internal test. You can feel that it's not right, otherwise you wouldn't be here... So what speeds are they supposed to be giving you? Another warning, the server address you go to when you perform their speed test isn't necessarily where the test is coming from. They could host the site it outside of their network.. but transfer using an internal server. Tricky business and it should be against they law. As I've said many times, you're paying for Internet not Intranet. It's just not real world.

I use pretty much one user for my databases... just make sure your password is strong. Bruteforce is pretty ineffective... unless the password is dictionary based. You should worry more about SQL injection hacks than someone actually cracking your entire DB.

This topic was started early yesterday but is just being made live because the counter just rolled over. MILLION PARTY! I've been cryptic about these in the past, basically every million speed tests I'm going to post a theme based topic. Just for fun. Join me in posting videos, links.. whatever that's related to this parties theme. This time the theme is "Crazy People" This lady is nuts!

Different test results between Linux & Windows?
CA3LE replied to Heeter's topic in General Discussion
I hear that... I'm not 100% positive but from my experience Intel based NIC cards usually have good linux support. Can't hurt to give it a try. Also, have you messed with any TCP settings or are you running a fresh install? -
Different test results between Linux & Windows?
CA3LE replied to Heeter's topic in General Discussion
What's up Heeter, I haven't seen you for a while. You really shouldn't have a discrepancy like that. I just installed the latest LinuxMint 11 (Debian Edition). I got amazingly clean, quick tests with that setup out of the box. Very nice and I'm running it on a fairly light virtual machine configuration of only 1GB ram and 1 core. I haven't played with mint since 8, thanks for reminding me about it. Here's a screenshot I just took. lol, I was getting a notification in the background. TestMy.net's method does a good job of highlighting differences between browsers and configurations, more so than other speed tests I've pit it against. But in this case, I'd have to agree with Triran... I bet it's drivers. Your chip may be poorly supported in Linux. If it's a major issue that you're having a hard time resolving here's what I would personally do. Hopefully you have a better network card laying around or know a friend who may. If not, get one. Aim for something popular and well supported and obviously if they state they're Linux compatible that's a good sign. Another thing you can do is look around and see if you can find someone out there that wrote better drivers. They're all over the place. But it can be a tireless search and can often be wasted time... in my experience. Usually just easier to change the card out in that instance. ... realize that I know nothing about the compatibility of your specific card in Linux... just letting you know how I'd troubleshoot it myself. -
If you only put the date it will assume 60 days. You can enter the date either 10202011 or 10/20/2011 (you can actually put anything between the month, date and year put 10%20@2011 for all I care). I'll re-add a calendar function in the next version, that you'll be able to more graphically select the date. So set the date, then the days are the amount of days you'd like to go back to. So 10202011 365 will pull from October 20th 2011 back to October 20th 2010 and graph / average blah blah... If development ever effects the test results I let my community know about it. It's always under development and it will always be under development. I don't think I could ever finish this. It's nowhere near the ideas I have in my head yet. ...but it's going to take leaps in technology to make the stuff in my head. Right now, with it not in development it means that my I'm not getting errors on my end. Cause I only take breaks when things are running correctly. This is definitely the best version of the site so far.

I wonder what you get to D.C. -- I'll be setting up more servers but I'm not trying to set too many up. I still believe that to truly test your connection you have to hop through some of your providers peers. I'll be setting one up in Europe and Asia in the near-term... that should provide some really nice testing points across the globe. Let's face it, even if you're somewhere else in the world... chances are, the sites you visit are in one of those locations. Obviously testing off servers close to where your getting the rest of your information is a better benchmark than testing 50 miles away. In any case, the extra servers I order will maintain the bandwidth quality that the home server has.

Hey Rick, I actually was noticing your results as you were testing today. I just recently allowed spaces in usernames, so please let me know if you spot any other bugs related to this. The problem was definitely due to the spaces in your username. But that's obviously not your fault. I've corrected the issue and you should be able to search and sort correctly. If you click share and export... ...you'll see an export button that exports to a common CSV format. Thanks for the support, please help me by spreading the word. - CA3LE ... looks like AT&T is winning your benchmark. AT&T Verizon AT&T Stats (formerly cingular) vs Verizon Stats By the way... did you know that you can track those all under one account by using identifiers. You can sign up for as many accounts as you want but I do have options to deal with multiple connections.

Well... again, I wouldn't expect crappy setups at Harvard. Just noticed a couple ~80Mbps results from Missouri State

This will change for you as soon as i really turn this on. Right now, only people who were previously detected as unknown are going off the new system. I want to gather a good amount of data before I turn it on for everyone. Thanks for catching that though... -Damon

This is not a speedtest! (RE:beelinebandwidthtest.com)

How about adding Ping testing
CA3LE replied to jkmccormic's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
Thanks for the suggestion. When I get back into production I would love to get something started like this. It would have the same database logging that you've grown to love from the speed tests here. Right now I'm taking some time off, we have a baby due in 4 weeks. Thank you for continuing to visit, I really appreciate it. - Damon -
Well thanks for being so quick to help

...like you forgot it was there? That's actually something I have to battle with as a designer. People become blind to things, if they're used to using the site in a certain way they stop noticing stuff they hardly use. I know this because I do it too. I've never really put the automatic speed test out front because it wasn't in a state that I'd want to put out front. It's working pretty awesome now though. -- maybe I'll throw a campaign on the front page to let people know about it. It can be really useful for troubleshooting, I get more positive feedback on that tool than anything actually... Yet only 1-2% of my traffic is utilizing it. Maybe because they've got their blinders on.

I love the idea. Totally possible, I'll be happy to work that in for you. Although, right this moment I'm taking a break from production. Look for this added feature on the Auto Speed Test in the near future.

Yeah.. any server to server file transfer in linux. Works very well in my experience. Going to be nice if I start putting up a bunch of mirrors, I'll just update the code to a local folder on my machine... then propagate it out to all the other servers. I've written it so that all servers will run on the exact same copy, not like the mirror servers have a slightly different version or something... only portions of the program are being actually utilized on the mirrors but it's just easier to make them all identical... then I just have them detect their own hostname so it knows what server it is when it executes the program.

D'oh! I renamed that on the main server and forgot to sync the two servers. I'm getting rsync in order so that it's automated from now on. That was the only problem you had with that server, correct?
