Different test results between Linux & Windows?
CA3LE replied to Heeter's topic in General Discussion
What's up Heeter, I haven't seen you for a while. You really shouldn't have a discrepancy like that. I just installed the latest LinuxMint 11 (Debian Edition). I got amazingly clean, quick tests with that setup out of the box. Very nice and I'm running it on a fairly light virtual machine configuration of only 1GB ram and 1 core. I haven't played with mint since 8, thanks for reminding me about it. Here's a screenshot I just took. lol, I was getting a notification in the background. TestMy.net's method does a good job of highlighting differences between browsers and configurations, more so than other speed tests I've pit it against. But in this case, I'd have to agree with Triran... I bet it's drivers. Your chip may be poorly supported in Linux. If it's a major issue that you're having a hard time resolving here's what I would personally do. Hopefully you have a better network card laying around or know a friend who may. If not, get one. Aim for something popular and well supported and obviously if they state they're Linux compatible that's a good sign. Another thing you can do is look around and see if you can find someone out there that wrote better drivers. They're all over the place. But it can be a tireless search and can often be wasted time... in my experience. Usually just easier to change the card out in that instance. ... realize that I know nothing about the compatibility of your specific card in Linux... just letting you know how I'd troubleshoot it myself. -
If you only put the date it will assume 60 days. You can enter the date either 10202011 or 10/20/2011 (you can actually put anything between the month, date and year put 10%20@2011 for all I care). I'll re-add a calendar function in the next version, that you'll be able to more graphically select the date. So set the date, then the days are the amount of days you'd like to go back to. So 10202011 365 will pull from October 20th 2011 back to October 20th 2010 and graph / average blah blah... If development ever effects the test results I let my community know about it. It's always under development and it will always be under development. I don't think I could ever finish this. It's nowhere near the ideas I have in my head yet. ...but it's going to take leaps in technology to make the stuff in my head. Right now, with it not in development it means that my I'm not getting errors on my end. Cause I only take breaks when things are running correctly. This is definitely the best version of the site so far.

I wonder what you get to D.C. -- I'll be setting up more servers but I'm not trying to set too many up. I still believe that to truly test your connection you have to hop through some of your providers peers. I'll be setting one up in Europe and Asia in the near-term... that should provide some really nice testing points across the globe. Let's face it, even if you're somewhere else in the world... chances are, the sites you visit are in one of those locations. Obviously testing off servers close to where your getting the rest of your information is a better benchmark than testing 50 miles away. In any case, the extra servers I order will maintain the bandwidth quality that the home server has.

Hey Rick, I actually was noticing your results as you were testing today. I just recently allowed spaces in usernames, so please let me know if you spot any other bugs related to this. The problem was definitely due to the spaces in your username. But that's obviously not your fault. I've corrected the issue and you should be able to search and sort correctly. If you click share and export... ...you'll see an export button that exports to a common CSV format. Thanks for the support, please help me by spreading the word. - CA3LE ... looks like AT&T is winning your benchmark. AT&T Verizon AT&T Stats (formerly cingular) vs Verizon Stats By the way... did you know that you can track those all under one account by using identifiers. You can sign up for as many accounts as you want but I do have options to deal with multiple connections.

Well... again, I wouldn't expect crappy setups at Harvard. Just noticed a couple ~80Mbps results from Missouri State

This will change for you as soon as i really turn this on. Right now, only people who were previously detected as unknown are going off the new system. I want to gather a good amount of data before I turn it on for everyone. Thanks for catching that though... -Damon

This is not a speedtest! (RE:beelinebandwidthtest.com)

... lol, "waiting for a DVD to burn" -- back in 2004 that probably too at least an hour maybe two... apparently I hadn't learned how to spell "elaborate" yet either. -
How about adding Ping testing
CA3LE replied to jkmccormic's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
Thanks for the suggestion. When I get back into production I would love to get something started like this. It would have the same database logging that you've grown to love from the speed tests here. Right now I'm taking some time off, we have a baby due in 4 weeks. Thank you for continuing to visit, I really appreciate it. - Damon -
Well thanks for being so quick to help

...like you forgot it was there? That's actually something I have to battle with as a designer. People become blind to things, if they're used to using the site in a certain way they stop noticing stuff they hardly use. I know this because I do it too. I've never really put the automatic speed test out front because it wasn't in a state that I'd want to put out front. It's working pretty awesome now though. -- maybe I'll throw a campaign on the front page to let people know about it. It can be really useful for troubleshooting, I get more positive feedback on that tool than anything actually... Yet only 1-2% of my traffic is utilizing it. Maybe because they've got their blinders on.

I love the idea. Totally possible, I'll be happy to work that in for you. Although, right this moment I'm taking a break from production. Look for this added feature on the Auto Speed Test in the near future.

Yeah.. any server to server file transfer in linux. Works very well in my experience. Going to be nice if I start putting up a bunch of mirrors, I'll just update the code to a local folder on my machine... then propagate it out to all the other servers. I've written it so that all servers will run on the exact same copy, not like the mirror servers have a slightly different version or something... only portions of the program are being actually utilized on the mirrors but it's just easier to make them all identical... then I just have them detect their own hostname so it knows what server it is when it executes the program.

D'oh! I renamed that on the main server and forgot to sync the two servers. I'm getting rsync in order so that it's automated from now on. That was the only problem you had with that server, correct?

https://testmy.net/ho...ory/harvard.edu This is one of many schools that are now being detected because of the change I made yesterday... pathetic speeds, huh. I hope those are off WiFi or something. If that's what they give in the dorms, just lame. Arizona (ASU) and California (UCI) look better https://testmy.net/ho...ats/arizona.edu https://testmy.net/hoststats/uci.edu Georgia tech too.. https://testmy.net/hoststats/gatech.edu ... but Harvard... super weak for such a powerful school. Thread Update: You can now see an up-to-date listing of schools that have had recent tests taken. This will eventually be ranked. For more information please visit > Schools and University's Speed Test Results

Cool, so you're going to have a home weather station? I bet that would come in handy where you live... Kinda pointless in Arizona since it only rains once a year -- so I have no idea about that stuff. I just wanted to say... COOOOOL. Anyone else?

No more Unknown hosts. I've taken care of it. ... Because the data is being stored a little differently in the database for this upgrade it will take me some time to gather some data and flip over the FULL conversion of this upgrade. For now, if you were being detected as "Unknown" the data is being stored in the old table a little differently.. The hosts with underscores in the name most likely would have returned 'unknown' before. After I turn on all the features of this upgrade (as I said, after I gather sufficient data) the hosts will be displayed by their correct name, minus underscores, cut offs and other things I had to do to make the data compatible with the old format. nJoy! - CA3LE

I would feel ripped off too. You're paying for internet, not a local area connection in Atlanta... right? This is just the kind of information that I try to educate people on with this website. I feel that this is happening allot more than people think and in many cases ISPs are not delivering what they're quoting. This is also why I don't have servers every 50 miles. I don't feel that testing so close is an accurate depiction of your internet connection. A true test of a provider is the quality peering relationships that they have. Some providers love sending users to tests that draw information down the street... then they say, "well, there you go... it's running correctly." -- How is that running correctly if you can only get your speeds to their servers... stupid. And you're smart for not falling for it. funny... In years past many more ISPs used to send users here... until they realized that my methods expose their weaknesses. ... don't get me started. I'm sorry, but if they can only deliver 5Mbps when you barely leave the state... they need to sell their service as 5Mbps. Who cares what speed you get in ATL, how often do you think you're on a server in ATL? And if they can't peer well with my provider, they suck. I get my bandwidth from the largest names in the game. So, yeah... I think you're being ripped off, given the information you've told me.

Seriously, but I would bet you a thousand bucks that would violate your contract. Would be awesome though, open a neighborhood WiFi and charge people... get a free GigE connection out of it. ... too bad you'd be sued if the provider ever found out. That's why they have business class... and charge out the ass for it.

I see why you titled this "Man..." -- that's exactly what I thought, "Man, I want that!" One day my friend... one day. If it was available here I'd pay the $350 and get it for sure. That would totally be worth it. 1000Mbps, at home... damn.

I'm now also showing a form field that you can cut it from by hand if flash isn't available... failsafe option. I should have some apps in 2012... going to be allot of work though.

Werd... yeah, there was a shit load of bugs I've had to work out over the last 48 hours after the mirror addition. There was more to that addition than it appears. I had to make it function the way it does without having duplicate information. If I just through a clone of the site online search engines would ding me for the duplicate content. Thanks for helping me spot that, one of those variable specific errors that I could duplicate on my end no matter how hard I tried. But we nailed it down in the end, working on that also helped me refine allot more code so it was a good bug in the end. I've worked all day and all night until the Sun came up for pretty much the past week straight. God, I hope I'm at a point that I can take a little break. System seems to be kicking out number the way it should, no anomalies... so I might get to have a weekend! WOO HOO!

I think I trying to do something the wrong way... I've redesigned the function that prevents that from happening. OKAY... try it NOW! lol
