I agree that I might be in for an uphill battle. My supplier keeps referring me to a speed test that's basically run by TooWay and it consistently reports speeds at around the mark that I'm paying for *. I keep pointing out that, whatever this test says, it simply does not represent anything like what I am actually seeing when sitting at my computer. It has nothing to do with individual websites or contention issues (see, I'm learning fast), this problem is across the board at any time of the day or night. Still they haven't stopped talking to me, so I suppose that's a good thing.

    * So far, all I have paid for is the hardware - I did my own installation - so, if they can't improve and get somewhere closer to what they offered me, I'll just not pay them. I presume I can find another supplier, where I can use the same hardware, but I'll cross that bridge if I come to it.

PS: Just got back from a night out with some friends, visiting from the UK - so at least I'm not hungry

you know this could be a hard drive issue, with the way this site seems to work i've even seen it pick up issues like that try running a benchmark on your HDD and see what sequential write speeds you can achieve typically a HDD can support speeds quite a bit higher then your internet connection but you never know o.O

    CA3LE = CABLE

    CA3LE6UY = CABLEGUY

I posted to this thread years ago... here's more..

First I got the nick from people on IRC because I was one of the first cable internet users... then from 2000-2005 I worked for Cox Communications ... I was a cable guy for a year then was promoted... just a coincidence that I already was being called CA3LE and CA3LE6UY.

A little late with a response, mainly cause I was trying to figure out the best way to explain it, without taking up half a page..

On the fateful day, I was sent to a administration building for a school, which shall remain nameless for now, to fix a refrigeration line that the non-english speaking workers decided to cut through because they were "dee dee dee".
Mind you, I was not supposed to be the one to go to this job either, as I was turned around from my previous destination.
So, I arrived at the building, met the supervisor to get the 411, and he directed me to the roof hatch(pictured below in case you don't know what it is..access to a flat commercial roof).
The hatch was located in a closet, filled with janitorial supplies, mops, tools, and also one of the main electrical panels.  There is a steel ladder which is mounted to the concrete wall.  This runs up to the roof hatch.
So I attempted to climb the ladder to access the hatch, as I was directed to do so by the supervisor of the particular building...

Well, I got to the top of the ladder, and reached out for the handle on the roof hatch, and POW! It grabbed my hand, and sucked me in.
At this point I knew what was happening, and I tried everything in my power to free myself, but the juice was going from my right hand, across my chest, and out my left hand to start.  Then as I tried to use my legs(which were still free, thanks to rubber soles), to bash my head into the hatch(was trying to break my arm off..Not figuratively, but literally).  Eventually my shins got stuck to the ladder, and I lost all ability to move...I guess people in the building either saw the lights flickering, or heard me thrashing around.  I thought I had screamed, but witnesses said they only heard me for a second(I think my mind was screaming, but since my chest muscles were contracting uncontrollably, I could not scream).
The hatch was live because the morons on the roof decided to start ripping the roof apart without reading the plans(oh wait they couldn't read or write or speak english).  Basically, they left a live wire touching the roof hatch, and removed the ground for the roof hatch, therefore leaving the electric no where to go, until someone grabbed the hatch.  The power was for all the exterior lighting for the building..
Eventually I began to beg to put an end to it..I don't mean just stop the pain, I actually was begging to die.  Let's just say it takes a lot of pain to wish death upon yourself.  Just as I began to lose any hope, I heard a loud pop(which till this day, I am not sure what it was..I believe it may have been me hitting the floor).
The supervisor must have realized what was happening, and he turned to building power off..Problem was, the main panel was in the closet I was in, and if he had gotten to close to me, both of us would have been killed...So he had to get the key for electrical room in the basement, then get to the basement, open the door, and turn it off...Took about two and a half minutes(one and a half of which I think I was conscious).
They carried me outside the building(which was totally dark now), and I preceded to spit blood everywhere(thought I bit my tongue, but I just popped blood vessels in my mouth).  I thought I was fine,  , all I wanted to do was get my keys from my truck(i have no idea why).  And I kept asking who was going to take care of my ferret(I think shock was settting in).
Eventually the ambulance came, and gave me a ride to the nearest hospital, where they pumped me full of morphine, and ran every test under the sun.  Then I spent a few days in cardiac care, until my blood levels were back with in normal range.
I got lucky as hell, by all accounts I should be 6 ft under.  There were little things in my favor.  I am thin, I was not soaked in sweat yet, and I was young.  Doctors said had I been either: 10lbs heavier, wet or 10 years older, I probably would have been cooked.
For the most part, I came through it OK.  I had a heart attack, but so far tests have shown it is ok.  I lost nerves in several parts of my body.  Below is how they fixed the thumb nerve(looks a lot better now).

Guess I never added to this topic. I was trying to come up with a user name about 7.5 years ago with my 18 month old son sitting with me.
The kid kept mashing the keyboard as I was trying to type in "danno" and it eventually came out as dn0.
I just kept that username for years until I recently changed it to dann0.

CA3LE reacted to Smith6612 in Connection reset and speed test issues (upload)
Hey guys, I'm not quite sure if I reported this previously. I remember tying up this post some time ago and then forgetting to submit it afterwards. Anyways, it seems the current version of testmy.net has a few issues that should be addressed.

1: For those of us who like running a more sustained download and upload test for, say connections that need time to ramp up the speed on the upload (due to TCP/IP Auto-tuning, server settings, routes, etc) but have slower connections such as a 768kbps upload, I find that to servers such as the East Coast server if the upload test doesn't complete in a certain amount of time the file finishes uploading and I never receive a result back, instead getting a connection reset message. Sometimes it goes through but it's generally to a connection reset most attempts. I do not see these issues with fast connections or short (10 second) tests.

2: It seems as though the upload speed test has an issue where it is reporting a speed based on how long the test took. From what I see on my network monitor here when doing a 29.2MB test, I can see the line pushing 85-90KB/s solid according to a WAN network graph built-in to my router (DD-WRT and a Windows Network meter) however testmy.net reports back indicating the speed is half of that, at about 40KB/s or about 320Kbps. This is a random problem that seems to occur regardless of how long the test runs, but it seems improved in some browsers such as IE instead of others such as Firefox and Chrome. I know Firefox has an option to adjust the Sending Buffer, but this doesn't make a difference. It almost seems like it's something Javascript or test related since the upload file seems to be dynamically generated.

3: On machines with a small amount of RAM or a weak CPU, it seems the upload test when running a large file test (most often 17.5MB and higher files) tends to cause the browser to consume a good amount of processor time, depending on the browser of course (this mainly includes IE and Chrome). In addition, the browser uses double to triple the amount of additional memory based on the test size. This may be something to fix as it really decreases the performance of the test.

Aside from making sure the signal levels your receiving are at the appropriate place the only other thing you can do is keep complaining to them it is most likely an issue with their peering and they most likely already know about it I would keep complaining it could be something as simple as a bad amplifier on your node it can't hurt to complain right?

I was getting intermittent web page loads. What bothers me is that when you test the connection with their SpeedTest.ohio.rr test, you can watch the analog meter wander around between 0.4 and 1 Mbps upload during the speed test, and even when the need stabilizes at about 0.5 Mbps for the last 1/2 of the test or so, the digital readout at the end indicates 0.97 Mbps. There should be a class action lawsuit against them for that BS.

The TMN upload test was presenting a reasonable result showing about 0.4 and at time much worse than that. I tried 3 other speed test sites, and the only one that displayed the Upload speed being low was SpeedTest.org (showed about 0.5 Mbps). All the rest of them showed some distorted result that made the system appear good at 1Mbps.

Thanks TMN for having a good test system.

You can close this thread. Or if I can, how do I close it?

if it is a routing issue its nothing testmy.net can fix nor is it a problem that testmy.net has it's the peers job to fix the issues whatever they may be infact it could be TWC that has the problem there is just no way to know... testmy.net does have multiple servers in multiple markets to test

Damon has a server on each coast aswell as one centrally located so you should be able to test from at least one

try one of those and let us know

Actually testmy.net is telling you there is an issue somewhere along the testing route. Which is the very reason for it's being.

Running traceroutes can tell us where the lagging router is, checking peer availability , congestion and availability is another.

There was a time where this was not an issue , yet with the recent national routing changes, specific cross continental advertising and video streaming services, not to mention the latest knowledge of the Utah datacenter for national security , and it's special routing procedures , have caused a few peering issues that the ISP cannot and does not have any say in.

For instance , I can test to testmy.net dallas from silicon valley area ( Cupertino ) like it's within my ISP's internal network, but testing from NW Ohio , renders drastically different results. This is not a flaw, this is valuable information.

You can get information on the status of various peers if you so choose here , I use these tools regularly.

Have a look at the image below to understand main routing

Doing a Auto Speed Test for Upload only. Doesn't seem to want to work right for me.

    Setup:
I turn off Express, set it to every 15 mins 5 times at 29.2 Mb.

    Results:
When I start it uploads 265 Kb then 1.5 Mb and thats the end of the first test.

Why is it not uploading the 29.2 Mb?

Auto Download Test is working fine however, no problem there.

Good to hear -- I hope your connection gets sorted.

I haven't had any reports of it not working. It may be an issue with the browser. I just checked it in IE and it was working perfectly. I'd really like to know why it wouldn't load... but if I can't duplicate the problem it's very hard for me to solve.

Realize that TestMy.net is as much of a browser test as it is an internet speed test. Different browsers perform differently and can vary from version to version. Most speed tests are passively ran in the browser, TestMy.net really puts it to the test... if the browser don't hold up, neither will the test results. The results from TestMy.net can definitely point to misconfigurations in your OS as well as browser settings. My recommendation is to stick with the browser that not only performs best with my tests... but also feels faster. In my experience, IE in some cases runs faster... but actual browsing doesn't feel as snappy as Chrome or Firefox. It's all personal preference.

... the graphs here are based on very popular javascript libraries. (not saying there isn't bugs... there is ALWAYS bugs in programming even if Jesus is at the keys) It's highly compatible. If it's not loading, it may be something messed up with the browser.... and it may be causing other things to not load properly. Stick with a webkit browser like Chrome, Firefox or Safari -- your online experience will be best with those. Now, in the future... who knows... it changes all the time. ... as for IE, it seems to be sensitive and I often hear complaints about it being broken in some way or another.
