The thing to do is partition your hard drive! that way you can have a os partition that get rewritten but all of you important stuff can be moved onto the other partitons of the drive. I dont know why companies dont ship computer with a partitioned drive.. it just makes sence!! I am currently in the process of writing a guide to build a custom install disk that you can make so that all of your programs are restored after you run the install of Windows...(look for it late May)

I am not a huge fan of the msconfig way.. You might want to look into blackviper's service page.. a simple google search should yield some good results.. Also a spyware scan and maybe a defrag is also needed.. One other thing you might want to look into is a registery cleaner.. If you have had your current install of windows for a while the registery becomes a road with about 1 million pot holes from installations and uninstalls...

Can't access router or modem while downloading
Swimmer replied to troutforbrains's topic in Networking and Hardware
That is a interesting problem you have there.. Like tommie recommended try by passing the router.. plug the modem directly into the computer that you are using. If that works then you know it is a router/switch issue.. ( do you have DHCP turned off on the router?) You also might want to power cycle the equipment.. just to make sure that it isnt a one time bug.. If that still doent work.. then call the good old ISP.. You should be able to surf the internet while downloading.. You download would slow to allow for the incoming/outgoing traffic generated by the surfing.. BTW welcome to the forum! -
This is another one of those problems.. like rich said check firewall.. if you are prompted for a password.. try the default one.. I think you can set up an account to log other computer on to that computer. Something about Windows XP pro vs. Home vs Ever other edition of windows. what versions are you using?
-
yeah you could do that.. you need a WOL complient motherboard and NIC.. but that is a possibillity.. you are also going to need another computer to send the packets.. Which would be easy to do with this program, http://magicpacket.free.fr/ , and maybe windows scheduler? http://gsd.di.uminho.pt/jpo/software/wakeonlan/mini-howto/ The other thing that you could try is hibernate with a password on the computer. That way the system is saved just as you left it and then shuts down http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/tune-11.html

happy birthday! umm.. benefits? one year closer the 21?

look for new drivers... Also that speed, as php said, might be what you get.. verizon offer a 768 package for DSL.. do to the limited roll out of FIOS that is what I would guess you have. Not a whole lot to do as far as speed goes..
-
umm.. that is most likely going to be a colo.. i dont know that anyone that oven offers a dedicated service that has 10gig for bandwidth.. what are you doing with this? For an unlimited 10mbps fully burstable port and rack space(NO equipement) you are looking at $1500-$3000 per month depending on the backbone carrier.

yeah.. hp is where I have been..never tried epson.. but have had a canon.. that thing uses so much ink it was crazy.. I have a few friends with the epson all in ones and those are pretty nice I must admit.. So far this year I have been able to get by on 2 black inks and 1 color.. Not bad for a college IT student..

are the same name and password on the server? otherwise it wont work..
-
yeah.. it is norton.. I just help someone else deal with this.. you are going to have to write a rule that the local IP of those computers are trusted.. that should take care of the problem.

Phishing: Can anyone do anything about these fake sites?

sounds like a compromised server.. and one that is hosted over seas.. -
It depends on how they have the network set up... It could be that their ethernet, hardware, and wireless are separate physical networks.. This way security is maximized.. Speed wise I would have expected the ethernet to be faster.. but due to other stores, consoles, and other network traffic.. Again it is really hard to know with out knowing anything about the network WEP.. pretty much the first security protocol for 802.11.. based on the RC4 encryption and a CRC-32 check sum.. basically what happens is since WEP is based on a stream cypher.. the same key can never be used twice.. since the IV packet is transmitted in plain text all you have to do is capture the packets and assemble the key. WPA2 Personal... Basically it is a improvement on WPA as far as security goes.. It allows the user to have government grade encryption on their network.(FIPS 140-2 AES) WPA2 personal uses a setup password similar to WEP/WPA, I believe, to secure the network. WPA2 Enterprise.. This is for larger implementations and where security is extremely important. It uses a server instead of a password to secure the network. here is some more info on WPA2 and how you can implement it.. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0505.mspx

there is one thing that you are going to want to be careful of.. if you dont have USB 2.0 you are going to want to get an add-on card.. trying to transfer files over 1.1 is just painful.. if you are interested in turning your external hd into a networkable drive check this product out.. http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1119460471050&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper I have seen it for about $80..

you are selecting the partition you want to install the os on.. I always delete the partition, then create a new one, then formate it NTFS.. This is all in the setup part of XP.. nothing to do in dos.
-
well... i dont condone piracy on any level.. But you might want to look into doing a full format during setup instead of quick..
-
yeah i saw this on the new today.. pretty cool.. if you want a torrent.. here is a copy.. http://www.mininova.org/tor/296239 the site currently has the dugg effect.. might want to try later..
-
sounds like speed step might not be installed correctly... did you reinstall the OS? Compress air should get rid of the dust build up by the fans.. The problem is that the cpu is cooled passively, using a heat sink and heat pipes, to bring the heat to the fans to deal with... At least that is how dell does it.. If there is something wrong with the heat pipes then that could be your problem.. You might want to call tech support if the product is still under warranty.

not thrilled about this.. just gives the government one more big brother.. Hell maybe bush is already doing this it could be a part of the wire tapping that he decided to do.. I personally think that you should have to have a warrent to tap/capture any information that could be used against you in court.. -
