  3. The signal strength won't have any effect on your download speed. It has to be something else. Once the receiver "locks" on the signal, variations up or down just don't have any effect. It is a digital signal, so it is not like a radio signal that can fade down etc. Once you hit the noise threshold, it just falls apart completely and looses contact. The stronger the signal level though, the less chance you will have losing it when bad weather hits etc. My signal sits at about 62 as well, slowly dips during the day to around 56, then slowly back to 62 by sundown. It drops out completely at about 30. Did that once when the feedhorn filled with water Removed it, dried it out and sealed it up. Great since. Jim P
  4. I use the Cisco VPN client (version 4.0.3) to get into work. Works OK here with the DW6000 CE. The speed will be slow, so expect that. It does work fine though. Addionally, our company uses IPSec over the vpn. Enable Transparent Tunneling - Should be enabled in most cases, with one of the two following IPSec protocols enabled. I could not get IPSec over TCP to connect, but when I tried IPSec over UDP it connected right away. This is something you may want to check with your IT folks. See if the VPN gateway host supports IPSec over UDP, as it appears to directly support a NAT'd client. 1. IPSec over UDP (NAT/PAT) <-Default in most cases. 2. IPSec over TCP - Ports available 80, 90, 900, & 2020 Peer response timeout (seconds): Should be left at 90 Several ports and protocols are used, or can be used by vpn. Your firewall should allow you to pass the following: Protocols 50 and 51 UDP 500 For IPSec Over UDP UDP 4500 For IPSec over TCP TCP 80 TCP 90 TCP 900 TCP 2020. Jim P .

  6. Welcome SK. I've been on DW since late march. Couple things. What browser are you using? IE gives the best speed (by a couple hundred Kbs) Don't know why. You have good signal strength and that will help when it rains etc. More memory will indeed help you out. Make sure you have the proxy settings set as was described above. I'm on an older system as well with win 2000 and the DW6000 and my speeds are consistently right at 1 meg down. Even with early tweak-needing etc., my 30 day average is 950K. OK, not cable speed, but WAY better than the 28k dial-up I had before. Have fun, Jim P

  8. AMC-9 is a new satallite for Direcway to use, but it is not a "new" satellite. Apparently it has some open channel bandwidth that Direcway has purchased. It is quite low in the sky, so some locations will have problems getting to it. It has an elevation angle of 30 degrees here on the West coast. Very hard to not have obstructions with that low an angle. They were going to put me on it as well, but we could not get to it. Should work fine if you are locked on to it. By the way, there are some who will swear AMC 9 is not used by direcway,. Once again, they are wrong. Good luck, have fun! Jim P
  9. Hello shufdog. Well, it depends on what you are looking to do. Presently, there are two main providers of consumer satellite access for the internet. Direcway and Starband. While they have slight differences, what you need to have knowledge up front about are today's realities with satellite access. If your expectations are in check, you will make the decision that best fit's your needs. All of these comments apply to both Direcway and Starband. 1. The Satellites are 20,000+ miles away. Even at the speed of light, the time it takes to get there and back introduces a time lag (latency) that is much higher than what a local DSL or Cable connection experiences. Typical latency on DSL or Cable can be from 100ms up to 300ms. A satellite connection involves a latency of 700ms - 3000ms. While you will probably never notice that with casual browsing and email, it can absolutely drive crazy things like on-line gaming and Voice Over IP applications. Most peer to peer applications that expect (or assume) some kind of response within a relatively small latency will probably have problems. 2. While downloads of data are at a decent throughput 500Kbs and up, the "Upload" throughput is very meager. From about the same speed as dialup, up to 100Kbs or so. If you intend to upload alot of data, this can be very frustrating. By the way, that is a concious control limitation by the satellite control centers. High speed uplinks are available, but VERY expensive. Catering to large business and Govt use. 3. All satellite operators over-sell their capability. If you read the comments on this board as well as other resources, you will see some folks who have not had an easy going with their satellite installations. If you happen to get put on a transponder (like a channel) that is over-crowded, your throughput can be very bad. Yes, the operator can do things to get you to a speed that is acceptable, but that process can be long and frustrating. What I'm saying here is that the there can be bumps in the road, expect some. 4. The technical support can be pitiful. Most of it is out sourced, and the person you talk to probably does not have English as a first language. That too adds to frustration. 5. All of you data routes through a National Operations Center (NOC). As funny as this might sound, if the weather above that location is very bad, you won't have access. Does not happen often, but if the weather is very bad at the NOC, OR, your location, it will adversely affect your connection. Expect that. If you have DirecTV, or Dish Network for TV, a heavy rain will do the same thing. 6. Installation procedures will make it or break it. It has to be done by an approved installer. Some are great, some are REALLY bad. If that dish is not properly setup, pointed, grounded, and cabled, you will suffer forever because of it. I can't stress that enough. If the installer nails it right, chances are you will have a great time with it. Check out these boards and print out anything you find on installation do's and Don'ts. 7. All operators "limit" how much bandwidth you can use within a specified period of time. This keeps a small percentage of users from "hogging" all the bandwidth. While this makes sense from a fairness standpoint, it can drive you crazy if you download alot of data. DirecWay calls this their Fair Access Policy (FAP). With a consumer account, you can download 169MB of data in a four hour period. Exceed that, and they shut down your bandwidth to that of dialup for 8 hours or so. The Pro account raises that amount to roughly double that, and you can get very high FAP levels, but you pay for it. There is indeed other competitive operations getting close to coming online and that will be good for everyone. Wildblue is one of them. Not available yet, and it has been postponed numerous times. The proof will be in the pudding. Now, after saying all that, I have a Direcway system that has worked just fine for me. I also have it networked wireless's. LOTS of expertise on these boards to help you with that. I have also seen Starband folks who have no problems as well. The 169MB FAP level on my consumer account just does not bother me, since I mainly do email, browse alot, and watch my download usage closely. Not much download needs. I typically get 1Mb download speeds. I think that's great. My install was miserable, but I was capable of cleaning it up afterwards, grounding it. etc. So my advice? Read as much as you can about other folks experiences with any service before you buy. Most (if not all) of the offerings tie you into a 12 - 14 month contract. So once you jump in, it is a commitment. Good luck, and don't be shy on asking all the questions you have. You won't regret taking the time to do it. Regards, Jim P

  14. Could not have said that better. Bigger dish equals more consistent signal. Really helps with weather and sun related variants. Does not necessarily give you better speed unless you have very poor reception now, and have re-transmits and receive locking errors. If your operation is steady now, you won't see higher speed, just better reliability. Jim P
  15. I thought I would show the settings I have used that work great for me. I wanted to have a Hardware Firewall like I use at home. Just my preference to firewall with hardware. The DW system is at a second place we are at 3 days a week (getaway). Hope to retire there some day. I also wanted to have an access point so we can use the laptop wireless, as well as let a neighbor have access when she does email. So this is what I have: Plug your PC into the Firewall only, don't have anything else connected. Set these with your PC plugged into one of the LAN ports on the Firewall with a standard straight-through cat5 cable.. Netgear FR114P Firewall / Print Server. Basic settings menu. Internet IP address setup. Static IP of 192.168.0.2 Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 Gateway IP of 192.168.0.1 DNS Address heading checkmark - Use these DNS Servers 192.77.116.8 198.77.116.12 LAN IP address setup. IP address of 192.168.1.1 Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 checkmark - Use Router as DHCP Server Starting address of 192.168.1.10 Ending address of 192.168.1.254 Save these settings. Then plug the DW6000 into the Firewall WAN port using the cable that was previously used to connect the DW6000 to your computer. It is the cable that came with the DW6000. The "uplink" switch on the Firewall should be set at the "normal" position. Power cycle the Firewall and It should then alow you access from the PC to the DW6000. Netgear WG602 wireless access point You will need to setup the access point without it connected to the firewall, so either use a wireless computer to access it stand-alone, or plug your computer directly to the access point. Basic settings menu Internet IP address checkmark - Get dynamically from ISP DNS checkmark - Get automatically from ISP WAN Setup menu checkmark - Get automatically from ISP LAN Setup menu IP address set to 192.168.0.4 Subnet mask set at 255.255.255.0 Chechmark - Use Router as DHCP Server Starting address of 192.168.0.10 Ending address of 192.168.0.51 Save the settings and log out. Then plug your PC back into the Firewall LAN port, and also plug the Access Point into a firewall LAN port, from the Access Point WAN port. Standard cat5 cable. Power cycle everything and you are good to go. Really works well. I know there are MANY other ways that you could do this, but this worked for me and I have no problems at all. I do limit the Access Point to only accept connections from the MAC address of the laptop, so the whole river can't use my connection. Thanks for listening. Jim P
  16. Howdy HawkEye. That was obviously from the heart, and that's OK. You wrote a great write-up on what you had, what you wanted to do, researched, and did to get it to wok. On a public BBS you are always going to get folks that add to it, disagree, have a better way etc. It will always happen. Keep with the fact that you portrayed some info that I'm sure helped out alot of folks. Everyone has a different view, of what is being asked. I thought most of the comments on your write-up were positive. Really. Yeah, you get all the variables of 'what if", and "but if'..", That's part of a BBS. Everyone has a different need. Doesn't mean the other need if deficient. It's just another view of another situation. For the record, I have a DW6000, Hardware Firewall, and Wireless access point. They are not all treated as just switches either. I had to use a crossover cable as well in my situation. And guess what? It all works great! Everyone has a unique setup, and I know what you wrote of your experience will help those in the similar one. All of us take half of what we read and say, "yeah, I get that", and the other half we say "not my issue". Don't sweat it. Keep your experiences coming, that is what a BBS is all about. Jim P

  18. OK, with a DW6000 a switch or router will do. Why ICS though? Just another layer of un-needed S/W.. It is not needed at all to share a connection with the DW6000. Jim p
