I have used this model of ethernet-USB adapter, and from my experience it is great. Since it is a laptop, you may need to be sure that you have IRQs set properly (you don't want 3 devices on the same IRQ# as your USB). Can you perform a traceroute? -start > run > type cmd and click ok -type tracert testmy.net and hit enter Post your results.
