  1. Having a wireless network is great and nearly a must for so many, it seems security has taken a backseat to the authors of the devices used. Leaving this open to thoughts and interpretations of each person, my question is , what are you doing to secure your data while broadcasting or not broadcasting your local wireless network(s)
  2. Off topic a bit none the less - although I have wireless here, I'm always concerned about infiltration, into other area's of the internal network. As having someone USE or borrow the network is at the very bottom of the 'I wonder if' level. Instead , allowing the passerby to find the network, utilize it and move on after seeing nothing more than a gateway has been in my thoughts. Since so much has moved wireless , I had no choice but to implement, but simply locking shares down to local hosts is not nearly enough. Hence the next step in securing your local wireless networks
  3. I believe this macbook pro is at the stage in it's age, that 10.8 is the last viable option. After a few days 'things' just kept getting worse. Heating up to the point of concern, fans full bore 6K rpm, while typing, unless I closed my eyes, I could not type. How is this ? Because the letters on the screen were behind by as much as 3-5 seconds. haha Try that one out. On copy ( anything even one word) spinning beach ball for a second. Web pages load instant- lovely correct ? I watched the network as I typed, prefetch was working flawlessly to pull a cached page in , then upon scrolling, the page would jump all over until the browser recognized I was actually on the page and loaded it completely. This on any site. I did read where it can take a week or more to settle in , whatever this means, but no way could I simply wait for an OS to figure out what it has to do, to perform properly. I can only assume since this particular machine is at the tail end of supported hardware, that it's all too much for the latest greatest. Which honestly I have an ebook reader, I can use google maps, or google earth if I must, I don't use iTunes but rarely, so I found nothing new for myself in there at any rate. So I'll be that one getting left behind. Until of course and only when I must flog my account for a new machine. Some of these last year model mac pro's will be hitting the scene for resale soon, so maybe by mid summer 2014. Geezus i would love to grab the new mac pro. Did a fresh install of mountain lion, migrated my apps back in, and ohh there the apple machine I know and love.
  4. I used to despise netgear, years ago that is. When there was a router virus going around that exploited the firmware, dns changer I believe. Now that I've experienced this and constantly pull falling hair off the keyboard ( ignore that last bit) - So I have a couple here, older ones none the less perform well. Of course i flash with dd-wrt, none the less the hardware is proven.
  5. Ahh yes, and nexdef does not currently function with mavericks
  6. Desktops or spaces, are still active in mavericks. Unlike many articles claim. While in mission control , move your cursor to the upper right corner of the screen , you'll see then a plus sign appear, clicking this sets up a new 'space' . Drag the app you wish to that space. control + the # of the desktop is not working for me yet, but chances are his is a keycap option I'll have to set up. However a two finger swipe left or right , on the display you wish, will take you there. Although this removes the hands from the keyboard, which is irritating as it is time consuming. Can anyone explain how to switch spaces on a desktop that does not have the mouse setting on ? I quit using spaces when mission control was introduced, never really cared for it. So I have been dealing with a cluster f of layered apps, I'm willing to give this another go as the mouse thing has crept up on me since.
  7. Sonova **** ! You cannot stretch *anything across screens, what the world is that all about ? I do this a lot, not anymore no ? I'm sure I'll be finding a tweak for that nastiness. Forget about safari or webkit when trying to test, it's horrible. Whats up with this ? Firefox and chrome are fine - I understand the firefox being ok, but isn't chrome built off webkit ?
  8. Strange because mine is a 2007 pre unibody 3,1 - I though I read anything that ran 10.8 or mountain lion was supported. Well this I did find so fair enough I suppose ~ Mavericks Capable Macs Mavericks, like its predecessor Mountain Lion, requires one of the following Macs with at least 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of available hard drive space: iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) Xserve (Early 2009) I never really used the network monitor, but have used nettop , you can run ....... nettop -nc -m route ...if you want to catch it live. Trying to get ntopng running on mavericks, looks like it'll need compiled Vs. the pkg offered.
  9. Yes, and I am completely out of my element without being able to tap a couple keys and change desktops. At the same time , I hated it , never did like how when selecting an app, it didn't bring it to you , but instead took you to the damn desktop the app was open on. Pissed me off to no extent lol I rarely use iTunes anyhow so I cannot relate. I use a local cloud server so streaming music from that is simple without all iTunes BS. Couple other 'things' are getting under my skin , but I'll see about setting them before pitching a bitch. maybe lol
  10. Mavericks is the latest Apple operating system update. I do like the maps application - useful and fast.
  11. I should not have none the less I updated already. Not a new install. To be honest who ever is not a bit leery of free shit, should be. Not sure why the 'gift' - although I could speculate several different ways, though I have my tin foil hat on, so think about it with everything that we see today. Update went well, first impression - geezus would you have a look at the crisp colors on everything. Memory compression? Ok sure , running less processes combined makes the system several percentage points faster not just by feel. Added menu bars to other screens, yea it works so far for me, although after less than one day into this, I dunno. Overall so far fine, not an issue one in any sense. Updated a few softwares and off and running. Something however has a creepy feel to it, maybe this is in my head, likely. None the less I'll be watching my external firewall logs to see just what traffic is moving when I am not doing anything, and hopefully flagging anything not intended for transmission.
  12. Running pfsense on an HP box with 4-GB nics split by a cisco 2924-xl for local KVM acess ect, a DGS-1224G GB switch, one card to a wtr54g with ddwrt, a wap11 which acts as a repeater. I pulled cat6 through this old plastered house and dropped GB nics in all the machines. The wireless is controlled through 'captive portal' ( which plays hell on the kids 3dsx hahah ) on the pfsense appliance for external access. All hardware devices are on seperate subnets from any servers and or wireless networks. Using turnkey PDC to keep things in order.
  13. Well he was as far as anyone could see a happy man. Had a lot of good laughs. So long see you around the corner
  14. Now you are getting somewhere. Some companies seem to assume the " give the customer the run around until they just stop bothering us " mentality. Having this thread also is and will help you. Thanks for keeping us updated, I for one will cheer when you finally get whatever small issue is causing your problem repaired. All the while watching the carnage the company is causing themselves in order to avoid taking proper measures to insure the product you have purchased is delivered. Kudo's on your tenacity
  15. Hey uwais , welcome to testmy.net forum. First I would assume there is a tel line connection loose or frayed at or around the drop. Although with you saying there is a speed drop, not a total disconnect, this could be a direct short - hence the damp as well as windy. Only advice i could give is to relentlessly use the call center, when I say relentless, I mean to say be kind and assertive the same. Call back much more frequently than 48 hours or less, if you can call several times a day. You know what has taken place in the conversation thus far, use it to passively aggressively push your way to getting the attention of a higher tiered tech. Or someone that can actually diagnose from their knowledge instead of just passing a ticket. You could also take another road, call in and stake a claim that you are considering canceling the service due to not being able to utilize the service you've signed for. With reasons why , keep to the repeated contacts and tickets, many times this gets the attention needed. Please post back frequently as to your outcome , when you can yes ?
  16. Yea I noticed that, then thought, hell it does not take much to spoof. Interesting enough though , even here at tmn I have seen posts that I have made, with IP's not associated with anything i am doing at the time of posting.
  17. Nah - just never thought of a computer as a political tool, in the sense i read it. Elliot, you'll do as you see fit for your needs I understand this. However personally , I would never rely on a hackintosh for work. This may be due to never successfully setting up one on any hardware I have here. I have every Apple distro on original disk since late PPC days here from previous machines, and just about every hacked distro I found when trying to get soothing pure and stable / permanently reliable. None of which I have been successful at getting something that didn't bite me in the tail at some point.
  18. So mac users are now stamped liberal ? Lil' bit of a stretch with your mac hate there ? Sad Elliott, but hey ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
  19. I would try several different test servers, unless you have and this is what you mean when you say any upload test. Then do a ping and traceroute to testmy.net To ping a host... Windows Start > Run > type CMD [enter] > from the command prompt type ping google.com and/or ping testmy.net Linux / Mac Under Applications/Utilities open 'Terminal' > type ping google.com and/or ping testmy.net Paste those results here. To run a traceroute... Windows Start > Run > type CMD [enter] > from the command prompt type tracert google.com and/or tracert testmy.net Linux / Mac Under Applications/Utilities open 'Terminal' > type traceroute google.com and/or traceroute testmy.net Paste those results here. This information should tell you what your path and latency look like. As for the latency, unless you are on satellite should not be very high. Within the 30-80 ms range as an example. Many times situations such as yours reflect a local issue , such as you have stated, local firewall issue , or even many programs used to 'protect' the system , actually hinder performance and cause a plethora of issues. Please post back any findings.
  20. I would say ok to someone getting my login , but I was the one who changed the email.
  21. Hi Nkrumah , welcome to the testmy.net forum. Your test results show rather consistent, so the next question is what tier are you paying for , or what bandwidth does this 101 package claim to be supplying ? I like that excuse , the poles can't be reached ? Why would they toss that in there ? Unless they know of an old line issue that will cost them, just guessing of course, but as you stated, they'll reach it right quick on the day the customers payment is overdue lol
  22. DOH !!! XD
  23. Super nice score !
  24. Just changed my information on ebay, ebay of course sends a message explaining this was done. Below is the email from ebay to the 'old' email account. Doing a traceroute to that IP , this is what comes up..... I would really enjoy an understanding of this. Outside of my initial thought , that in some way my firewall has been compromised. And if the ISP is randomising IP's for some reason , i can appreciate that for sure , at the same time , not the whole china thing. And certainly not the sprintlink thing.
  25. In any situation.
