  1. Thats exactly what I needed - you da' man ! Yea, I'm on 10.8.4 but this will be suffice until I get that together for sure. At the same time , 6.0.4 is the latest v. apple will give me on 10.8.4 -- so no worries
  2. You can head here and detect it, but these things are not always completely reliable - ask me how I know lol I'll dig through the plist for this and get back shortly
  3. One of you out there using safari , grab your user agent string for me ? Some time ago I decided it was a great idea to change it (not with the developer menu) , through terminal. i.e.: defaults write com.apple.Safari CustomUserAgent "\"Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/419 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/419.3\"" Worked great for some time, whenever i wanted to use something null on a site for several reasons, and I could still switch anytime I needed to from the dev menu. Anymore , UA strings have become so important, with the wrong string , the application can't figure out what to serve. At any rate, I grabbed something a while ago which appears close , but no cigar really. More and more sites are hanging on load ect. thanks
  4. I might take ca3les advice, save up for a machine. During that time if you have access to almost any box, run sabayon or debian. Your already on the path , follow it.
  5. That would be the next fad, 'where is my iphone - shoot, I forgot to bring it in the shower with me' lol At any rate, wish you well with your ISP
  6. Try different testing servers, use the CentralUS server as the control, move to washington DC and any other official testmy.net servers. Then you can move to publicly hosted servers for testing routes and providers.
  7. How would we know if the work our proc is doing is useful if it were not for the point system. Yes it's about finding a cure, and many other things. The points are the gauge. I read years ago the percentage of WU tossed due to inaccurate or corrupt submissions is high, of course that may have changed with the hardware, so by them returning a gauge as to what they can use out of what we sent , it helps a lot. Personally i do not believe in chewing through one resource for little or no gain towards the goal. aka the cure.
  8. I should refine my explanation. Folding , gene folding, doing the work of nature in a box , results somehow help those involved understand how disease and growth ect happen. If box #1 has no GPU, just running a client in terminal ect.. set to use idle 100% CPU cycles , it might hand in the work in time, but is a drop in the bucket, compared to the box with the latest graphics card. Why the reference ? ==> Knowing the cpu will be maxed out on box1, drawing power, creating heat. Now for the good part, aka - quality, yes when stanford receives in 50 million PPD in GPU WU's, those are different projects, than the CPU units, ok. At the same time think about how many regular CPU units must come in to come close to a percentage point of the GPU WU's , and the power consumption it takes to match those calculations. Ok? And not all of these slower calculations can even be used , due to many variables. So you see it is about the points, what can be used for results Vs. how many resources were used to get those calculations. Yes, it's great to be up in the pack in points list, that ultimately tells us that contributor has dedicated their resources.
  9. No I agree entirely, virtual instances seem to be very much memory dependent. It amazed me when I first started using them , compared to a box even ten years old, you need 5X + resource for a VPS to obtain the same performance.
  10. Is true here as well, at the same time, I love start-up companies, and if i can I jump in. Been looking for the right setup myself, tired of the limited resources that are offered by most if not all VPS hosts. Images chew through memory like cookie monster.
  11. Yes actually it is about the points. However it is about quality of WU submitted. Hence GPU PPD 1000+ even 3-6+ K / PPD , and anything I've tried on osx, windows or linux, 25-50 PPD. This tells me the heat pouring out of the box, far outweighs the quality of the math they accept. Points are given on a quality level. And by doing so is detrimental to the whole idea.
  12. The problem is unless you have a killer GPU you might as well not bother participating -- at least the last several times I checked -- they focussed in on the fact so many people were dropping costly video cards in their box's and took advantage of it. Linux is pretty much out of the scene with the new cores, and the video cards. Prove me wrong and I'll use a couple of these local 64 bit 4 core AMD boxes immediately. I'll be waiting for that terminal client -- I don't care to see something try and render billions of math cycles per second.
  13. Good advice. That, and you never know who might be the first to sign up and give your services a test drive.
  14. I checked them out, might take a month and see what can be done. Started me thinking , hell , I have a 2U HP dl380 sitting here i could plunk a few drives in and drop it in a rack, once I found the sky high prices for around here I quickly changed my mind. http://www.cisp.com/colocation-ohio.aspx So maybe I'll take a closer look at dacentec while others chime in .......
  15. NO VPS Dedicated hosting for one buck / month minimum 1000 Gb public transfer minimum 4GB RAM minimum 60 GB HDD storage no panel needed (although I don't write it out) - working ssh 1 GB connection preferred but not entirely needed at this point. Does it exist ?
  16. Time to move hosts. Here is the rundown over the last 7 weeks. I have repeatedly brought up the previous facts, as well as shown them their DNS has some intermittent issue ( for lack of proper DNS terminology ) This virtual instance does not exist anymore and has not for more than a month. This (above) is directly what their own system (along with the above) is reporting , yet they deny it has anything to do with their DNS Yet CS is claiming and I quote " that icon simply means the DNS zone is assigned to a different server," Yes, I know this , and this is why I am repeatedly contacting you. Helooo ? lmao The records clearly state the DNS is in fact pointed to the correct server, yet 'intermittently' the www resolves back to a nonexistent virtual instance. What is so difficult to understand , get a DNS admin on it. Simple. This appears to be propagation between primary and secondary DNS servers at mediatemple. As I explained to this gentleman , my dad taught me quite a bit, one of these valuable items was this, if you do not know the answer , allocate it , or find out who specializes in the particular field, do not attempt to make the questioner appear as if they are at fault by re directing the issue or question back at them. I am left with no other choice than to move the 25 domains some hosted and others simply using tucows, to somewhere more able to resolve issues when they arise. They obviously have no qualified DNS administrators on staff, and with this issue, which appears to be isolated right now, it is not worth their time to investigate. Then again , with what little DNS experience i have, NO DNS issue can be isolated. This will likely snowball at some point. Hopefully not, at the same time DNS is the backbone of the 'internet' , so one fault leads to multiple faults eventually. Rant over, searching for decent host with at the least bind9 servers, which I am doubting mediatemple is updated to, due to their length of time in business, ( which with the sheer amount of records they must have would be very taxing on the admin and many issues are reported and caused due to improper transferring) and they way they hold their business plan. Which is overall good, that has to be said.
  17. Outside of a BIOS flash for the specific board number. Can you open her up and grab that ?
  18. I've moved a site to my host, nearly two months ago. Set all DNS as it should be, nothing special or out of the ordinary. Clients are making phone calls of a 404 - google is sending messages complaining they cannot access the site, and even in the hosts own AC, we see the following -- The host claims everything is fine, clients trying to fill out a form located on the site to expedite their job , have another story. I have moved the domain to their registrar ( this should not matter) , tested with newipnow.com and find no issues, none the less , there is an issue. Not being a DNS admin ,the way I see it is the secondary DNS for the host is not letting the primary DNS know of these changes, since i did host the site for a couple months on another server of theirs ( which at times doing a whois and trace route , still comes up at that server ( which the instance does not exist anymore). I have to resolve this, and when the DNS owners I am using claim nothing is wrong , this puts me in a position. Do I move the site to a new host , hoping their DNS deletes the domain ? Continue dealing with this until i get an actual DNS admin to look into it , instead of just telling me "no worries MOST everyone around the world can access your site" Yea thats what he just told me -- duh me ?
  19. You might try changing AHCI to IDE within the BIOS - or another option. But never change that setting after a successful install, it will render that install useless.
  20. Run a few tests from the publicly hosted servers - just for curiosity reasons , can you ? That is very choppy I agree, no real consistency at all.
  21. Hi Todd, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it sounds like the typical TWC overloaded / bad card in the node. Keep talking with tech, they have gotten much better over the last several years. They will eventually come out and check for leaks in the main line and have a peek at the quality / integrity of the node you are on.
  22. As with anything at some point there is a 'step back' time , instead of attempting to improve something, work on the issues and plan, instead of chasing.
  23. Remember discussing this some time ago, not sure it got too much attention. If i remember correctly this went in front of the US congress as some of the FSF affiliates raised suite against MS. Here is the article on FSF http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/secure-boot-vs-restricted-boot/
  24. lol - we have an 'old' tech section , made for posting images and such of early tech , DX procs ect -- it's here just hiding I vision when you wrote that, you had one hand resting on your right hip bone , that at the time was pokin out to the right, and your left finger pointing at the screen
  25. Hey, I'm not laughing, I use a LG 220c -- whoopdidooo lol
