Good point, something for simpleman to keep in mind. And, tommie, I would assume that there is a contract requirement with Verizon, there is with Sprint. And the support? I have never had a problem, so never needed to call anyone, been around 2 years now. I don't test speeds on it much, but I do occasionally get into and area that seems to be a little busy, or saturated.

If you have the service in your area, then yes. I drive all over the city where I live daily while working, and I rarely loose the connection. It is pretty stable. BTW, you should also check the other carriers, but I believe Verizon and Sprint/Nextel are the two biggest EVDO carriers. Both are available in Omaha, NE, where I live.

I guarantee that there is a way to route them, hopefully without the expensive wi-fi sharing boxes out there. Although, that Linksys box is not too horribly expensive. When the wi-fi sharing routers fist came out, they were like 600 dollars and higher. Is it truly running the Revision A today? I have straight EVDO ( 1st Gen ) and get 200-400ms ping times on average. I hear that revision A is supposed to be better, but I did not think it was active anywhere yet. Either way, EVDO anything should be better than satellite for gaming purposes anyways.

Thanks, Sparticus, I think you're on to something. I almost always have the TV up on my ATI All in Wonder Radeon (I know, it's a little out dated) when I am at the computer. It loads up quicker with that off. I will try looking for newer drivers for the video, if any exist.

Yeah, running Java 2 Version 1.5.0_10-b03. I will try the reinstall again, I haven't tried that for a while.

Does anyone else have a problem with a Java applet taking a long time to load up? For example, a weather radar map using java. when I choose the looping image, the browser (both FF and IE) locks up for sometimes up to 1 minute or so. This is annoying. It even does it when running a speedtest with one of the NDT server's (most use Java). Good info there, p0ltergeist. Sparticus, it looks like you have plenty of headroom on both the forward and return. Modems seems to run best between -5dBmV and +10dBmV at the receiver, and between about +35dBmV and +52dBmV for the transmit level. This is from personal experience; so I would say that you have nothing to worry about. I would like to see the downstream SNR ( or MER), but apparently the SA Webstar doesn't give up that info.

The newer components are cheaper and more efficient. You may spend 200 bucks trying to find parts to upgrade your existing PC when you can go all new basic components for just a little bit more. I have a 4 year old P4 2.53 GHz that I wanted to upgrade, but after checking into the older memory and the fact that it only supports the first HT processors, I have decided to go all new. Just doesn't make sense to dump money into an old fart anymore.

Your talking many thousands for 3.5 miles of cable. First, just 3.5 miles of cable is very expensive, and most likely, coax won't cut it as most cable co's only run about 5 amplifiers in cascade maximum. They would need to install at least 6 amplifiers if they used the largest trunk line. The amps alone are 500-1000 dollars a piece. So, a fiber run and a fiber node are probably the best option, unless there are other homes and neighborhoods that they would pass on their way to you, then it would make financial sense. Now, where I am, we have tested a wireless DOCSIS system that has a few mile line of sight range from the physical cable plant. It is not cheap, but alot cheaper than running wires. I have Sprint's EVDO service on my work notebook. I have the Merlin S620 card, and my average speeds are around 500 kbps, so I agree, not bad. It all depends on signal strength and location. I know of a few spots in town where I get slower speeds most likely due to traffic at that particular cell site. The fastest I ever see is 1 to 1.5 mbps. Not bad for a totally portable service.

Yes, very nice ping times, upchuck1jr. Welcome to the forum, btw. Have you double checked for viruses/spyware? All of your levels and your SNR look great, nothing obvious there. Maybe try a longer test like: pathping www.testmy.net from command prompt. This will compute your stats over a time of approximately 5 minutes, if you have never ran that one before.
