I'm sorry to take so long to respond. I'm deep in development on the next TestMy.net. Is this a fresh install of Firefox or have you taken time to customize it? I might assume that you're using a fresh install because of how you speak about it but assuming things has made an ass out of me too many times so I try my hardest to avoid making assumptions.

You can do quick download tests with wget from terminal using TestMy.net's URL method. wget -O /dev/null https://dallas.testmy.net/dl-10MB (-O /dev/null pipes the output to RAM instead of disk) wget https://dallas.testmy.net/dl-10MB (saves to disk, like a normal download) rm dl-* -f (make sure to clear tmp files if you saved to disk) If you want to automate the process over a period and average everything out... I recommend using the Automatic Speed Test -- TMN is specifically designed for this purpose. I think you'll find the My Average Tool quite handy for querying and averaging longer periods of time.

I'm digging through your results and am only finding Chrome. Can you run a test in Firefox and paste me the results. Click on the "Share" tab on the results page. If you could capture a screen recording it would help even more. Sometimes I see a pause on my Comcast connection. Always at around 5MB in. I know that this is a symptom of the connection itself because if I leave all of the variables the same and connect my 4G... it runs smooth and never displays that symptom. Have you tested back to back... where you run a test in Firefox... see the pause, then run the same test in Chrome moments later?

The automatic speed test communicates with the server you have selected outside of its normal test sequence... it's testing your latency in the background. When you're using this test, you shouldn't be surprised when my servers talk to you... it's how the test works. If you think I'm doing anything malicious... don't use my program. You always have control over turning it on and off. Fact is, all my code does is try to help you improve your connection. Dig apart the client-side code as much as you want... as with any good program it only does things you ask it to do. I've been doing this for over 20 years, I respect my users and value their visiting and sharing my resources. I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize my users or the trust and reputation I've built. I wouldn't anyway, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." .... it may not have done that for you in the past because you weren't a member. You have to be signed in for that feature. If you think your wireshark is going nuts now you should see what I'm building.

Is your laptop also Windows 10? I'm trying to differentiate your results. If you go to https://testmy.net/mysettings you can select an identifier. Do this on your laptop and desktop to help sort the results. Unless your problem has been resolved I'm going to guess that this is your laptop... TestMy.net Test ID : Qdf6F52b4 ... and this is your desktop... TestMy.net Test ID : otO225XBt Looks like you're in Buenos Aires, is that correct? How old is that desktop computer? Similar in age to the laptop? Have you seen connection speeds that you'd expect to see using that computer in the past? You mention antivirus... have you tried disabling all of that stuff to see if maybe that's the thing holding you back? When all else fails you can try a refresh, reset or restore. [Please read and understand what you're doing first.] I would suspect software issues before I'd look to the controller, cables port or router. (based on the info you expertly provided) Personally, I like to do a complete re-install of windows every 6 months to a year... even if I don't have issues. As windows takes on some of the changes slated into the future I don't see this being necessary moving forward. But right now... it still benefits from a fresh install. Especially if you use that machine a lot. Windows just becomes a steaming garbage pile after enough use...... again, I don't see this being an issue in the future with the changes windows has in the works. But we aren't in the future, yet. ... OSX and linux don't have that issue. 100% of my OSX fleet have never had the OS re-installed. Some still working perfectly snappy for well over a decade. My windows machines are constantly being re-installed, otherwise I feel it. And I'm not anti-windows or pro-mac... in fact I have a big fat bar of black tape covering the glowing Apple logo on the laptop I'm using right now. I'm just pro-having a computer that works correctly. Windows has done that for me in the past, Apple does that for me in the present but I have no allegiance to either into the future. If the SchwettyBalls Pro (or whatever) came out and made my job/life easier I wouldn't care what the name is... as long as it does exactly what I tell it to do better than the others. Please let us know if this helps.

large up/down speed difference between laptop and phone?
CA3LE replied to bp3's topic in General Help
How far away is the MacBook most of the time? What router are you using? Do you know if you're running 2.4 and 5 Ghz or just 5 Ghz? I get highly variable speeds on my MacBooks around my house. As long as you feel comfortable and stable I wouldn't worry too much... you won't match that iPhone's performance. It's not really fair because of what's happening with 2x2 MIMO on the iPhone. Disappointed that the 2019 MacBook doesn't have that yet. Should have 4x4 really. The 10s came out in 2018... and it has 2x2 MIMO. I'd like Apple to also have LTE built into my laptop. I think this experience should show you that you already found the right tools to test that here at TestMy.net. Trust the program, it works. -

Check this out... The iPhone 10s had 2x2 MIMO... It doubles the bands. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIMO -
large up/down speed difference between laptop and phone?

It has nothing to do with the test itself... there is some reason why your speeds to that machine are limited. I see it's a Mac, how old is it? Have you tried wiring with ethernet? Not that you want to keep it that way but that test may help shed light on what's going on. Connect with ethernet, disconnect wifi and then run a 200 MB download test. -
Re-watched that and realize that Linus kinda scares people away from this option because of the price of the switch. I'm pretty positive that it can be done for WAY less than he says. Here's a switch that I'd try. $160 https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Ethernet-Unmanaged-Multi-Gig-Protection

Depends on your use case and what you're trying to accomplish. Tell us more about your network. Give us some of your common scenarios you encounter that make you think, "this needs to be faster." A possible great in between comes in the form of 2.5 Gbps ethernet. Here's an excellent LTT video from a few months ago on the subject. Currently TestMy.net is using 10G SFP+ for its internal network in the data center. Here's the simple 4 port switch I've been recently using. 100% reliably running for 1.5 years now. MikroTik 5-Port Desktop Switch, 1 Gigabit Ethernet Port, 4 SFP+ 10Gbps Ports (CRS305-1G-4S+IN) You need adapters and cables for each machine. If they're close to the switch then I'd recommend just using copper twinax cables [example]. Longer runs you'll need to get multi-mode transceivers (2) [example] and fiber patch cable to your length [example 10M length] Two computers 10G connected can be anywhere from ~$400 on up (switch, 2 adapters, 2 copper SFP+). And that's going the inexpensive route. Trust me, it only gets more expensive, as deep as your wallet can go. Unless you have particularly long runs, copper 10G is just fine. In fact, you'd never know the difference... unless you're a computer scientist. BUT, if you put fiber in you can upgrade to 40G and beyond easily later. Really, if you're already running cables... why not? They aren't as expensive as they used to be. If I were building a new house, fiber runs would definitely be in there. Again, knowing your use case would help us know which option might be best for you. For most people, that 2.5 Gbps option that uses existing cabling looks very promising. They have a bunch of USB adapters etc for 2.5 Gbps too, just search and you'll find it.

I'll do some more testing where I'll try to emulate a variable connection like yours and make improvements for the future to help in situations like yours. Thank you for the feedback and updates.

Please send a video, that definitely can help.

Does this happen only every so often? I'm looking into this and trying to reproduce the issue on my end. Next time you encounter this try to manually select your test size instead. I'd try a smaller test size than what fails because I suspect that your connection may be getting dropped or something during the process, causing the test to fail. I'll work to detect the issue so you can get a more useful error or make it so the test can correct for whatever the error is and report to you that it happened.
-
Looks like you've had results since you posted this. Did you find the issue?

Are you certain that the test was running? Did your computer go to sleep or hibernate? When signed in you'll get an email when it's complete. Here's all the results I see right now May 22 and May 23rd ?t=c&d=05-22-2020+%2F+05-23-2020&l=50&q=1010344289368's Speed Test Results

I haven't tried cFosSpeed. They make it sound like it would make a difference but I'd be curious to see the details of how it performs here. Run a speed test with and without it installed and share your results with us here. Also run a latency test and share those results.

Hey Gabe, made a little update to that. There's a copy button now. Before it was set to select the entire textarea when you clicked it. Now you can make your own selection and copy like you normally do. Or click 'copy' and it will copy the entire text area to your clipboard.

Cool, I'd love to check it out, post up the links when they're available. I started the domain TestMy.net in 2001. But my speed test pre-dates TestMy.net, going back to 1996. The original domain name was lost because I couldn't afford to pay for it -- maybe I just forgot to pay for it -- somewhere around 2003. WebArchive surftohere.com year 2000 --- membership / usernames started in 2004. -
What's your zip code? -- are you certain that there aren't any other options? A week ago I emailed the President of Buckeye, Geoff.Shook... pretty sure the email got to his inbox, no send return error. ... no response, not like I expected one. But I was hoping he might notice it and shake a branch to get things moving for you. Long shot. If I were in a similar situation, being ignored (by someone I was paying for service) first, I'd make a phone call and give them a chance to make it right. If it continues and you see no hope of it getting better, hopefully there are more reliable options available in your area. You may have to look outside of your normal consumer options. The advertised speed may be slower but if the connection sustains that speed and doesn't fluctuate heavily like you're seeing now.... then maybe a slower speed will be an improvement overall in your case. Sometimes you have to vote with your feet and walk over to the competition.

Is your modem a modem/router combo or is your router a separate unit? If there are multiple ethernet jacks out try connecting to a different one. I've seen where one is bad but the others are fine before. Because if you're testing on wifi just fine and testing at your friends house on ethernet (using the same cable) just fine... you've eliminated a lot of possibilities there. You're right, it really just leaves the ethernet connection of the router. If your modem is separate from your router you should try connecting directly to the computer from the modem (instead of the router). You already did this test at your friends house but I would still do it for good measure. You may have to powercycle the modem to get it to address the new device it's connected to. If your modem is combined with your router... and you don't have alternative outputs to try then yes, you might need a new modem. Whatever the case, please let us know how it goes.
