wow that IS quite a difference...

hopefully someone here has an answer

there are more than a few linux gurus in here...

i have ubuntu...but i'm pretty lame in how it all works **snicker**

i just like to say things like "run a test and post your image" so the techie guys can help...

it would also help if you post up some info about your  hardware...what's all in your box and connected to it.

CA3LE...good call on the "in-house" tech. Yes, they are night and day different from the regular installation techs. They'll also figure out the problem pretty quickly.

If you haven't tried re-booting the modem, try that. Power it down. Sometimes mine (different model than yours) gets quirky and erratic. Many times clearing the memory by powering it down and back up again has resolved the problem.

If that doesn't cure it, try plugging a laptop directly into the modem (other stuff disconnected) and see whether the performance is better. If it is, you probably have an issue with your equipment. If it's the same, then it points to either the cable modem, or their signal integrity. Signal strength doesn't guarantee that it will work right. The signal can be too big as well as too small and cause problems. If you do have the problem when plugged directly into the modem, call Cox back. Usually on repeat performance issue calls they will first try to help you over the phone, and if that doesn't resolve it they will send a tech out to troubleshoot. More than once Time Warner has found problems with their equipment outside at their amplifiers and switches.

Mine refers to my favorite cartoon show, called Code Lyoko. It's from France, of all places!

The antagonist is the character named XANA, one of those never-seen characters.

The "virus" part of my username refers to XANA's 1) ability to infect computers at an alarming rate, and 2) its AI nature of its creation.

For instance, one episode, XANA infects a miltary satalite - first using the local school's antenna, then from there it infects the TV antenna, which it then takes over the satalite armed with a deadly lazer.
All this in the span of a few minutes!

XANA, the character, has a symbol, which is my avatar.
If you're into tech and anime, you'd probably like this show too.

    CA3LE,
your analysis confirmed my beliefs.  It'll be awhile before Havasu's infrastructure is upgraded.  That said, there isn't anything Suddenlink (or any one) can do.  I'm not sure what areas Comcast services; I know they are on a long list that doesn't service LHC. No option but Suddenlink; unless you go with Frontier and get a 7.0 Mbps DSL connection that costs just as much.  Thanks for the response.  What part of Phoenix?  I spent 10 years in Mesa (82-92) and built pools all over the valley.  Been back a couple of times and am amazed at the continued growth. When I was there both Ahwatukee and Fountain Hills were basically just ideas/dreams of developers.   Thanks again, not only for the reply - also for the great site you maintain.

    Hey Swizzle, welcome to Testmy.net!

You're right on par with what you're paying for.  80% of the advertised speed is generally thought to be good.

As for them only offering 15/1.5 ... it's because of the market you're in.  Suddenlink actually offers up to 107 Mbps in select markets.  Havasu isn't very big, you've got about 53k residents there.  The cable infrastructure is probably older and that might limit what they're capable of up there (I say up there because I'm down in Phoenix myself).  They'll upgrade it eventually but they're going to be more likely to invest in new infrastructure first in markets where they have more customers.  In a smaller, less profitable market, they're likely to do the upgrades over a long period of time in sections.  As areas are upgraded they may start offering faster speeds to select neighborhoods before it's available to everyone in Havasu.

You're paying for 15/1.5 and getting 16/1.2 ... I don't think you're in bad shape at all.  In my experience dealing with Suddenlink's customers... generally they are all very happy.  Many get more than they pay for and some have incredible speeds that make me jealous.  They seem to be a good provider.  But their hands can be tied behind their back if the technology in an area isn't up-to-date.

I thought Comcast was in Lake Havasu.

    Howdy kfahern,

I also have Wildblue (Execed 12).  I just moved from Hughesnet, since they won’t hook folks in Southern Arizona to their “New” Gen4 (which is having major problems).   When I was researching Wildblue, I noticed a lot of people would start off working O.K., but then in a week or so, their system slowed down and starting “resetting” all the time (especially if you used a router).  On Hughesnet, I had a similar problem with the last Satellite modem (HN9000) that I had.  I found out that it had a major thermal problem, which I fixed by putting a 4 in. fan on the modem.  When the Wildblue installer left, I put the fan on the Wildblue modem.  I have never had a problem with my speed or the router “resetting” problem that everyone else, seems to have.

I am not getting the 2 mbps upload speeds, but I think that is because the installer did not “tweek” the alignment of the dish – he just “eye balled” it and it was close enough to the “acceptable power” range, so he never went back up on the roof.

You might want to try the fan trick.

    Hello existing members!

question I'd like to to gain some insight on: on a 15Mb Down/1.5Mb Up connection provided by the only cable company here in Lake Havasu - Suddenlink - our uploads are so pathetic?   Here are my combined averages DL is ~ 7% better; UL ~ 20% worse - than advertised:

             Download :: 16.2 Mbps 2 MB/s   Upload :: 1.2 Mbps 145 kB/s.

What I wonder is why Suddenlink only offers a connection that is slightly better than 50% the National Average.  Anyone got input?

DOCSIS 3.0 Channel Bonding and You

If you have a pre-DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and your connection speed is suffering, this might be exactly what you need to bring you up to speed. We've been telling people this for years... but this article does a good job of explaining why it helps.

Again, another case where an Ookla speed test failed to provide real results... and TestMy.net worked as designed.

Well so far not much has happened. I wrote a heck of a post on their facebook wall about the whole deal. We had lightening take out our modem on Saturday night. A tech came out Monday afternoon and swapped the modem, but he left without testing our internet connection at all. So the modem he put in had a Ethernet port that didn't work. After I wrote a post on their facebook about the modem and the thing with the cable line not being grounded I got a phone call from the general manager this morning. First thing he did was apologize for the whole incident and immediately offered a month of free internet service credit on our bill ($130). unfortunately when he called I was on the way to a college class so I couldn't talk for long. A tech was leaving the house as I got home today from class and now I have another new modem, which thankfully works. I didn't want to pursue the incident with the cable not being grounded till I knew that it was their responsibility to ground it. My mom was with the tech when he first checked to see if the line was grounded and he told my mom that it was not grounded in any way shape or form. Which ever cable tech hooked up the lines made no attempt to ground them. The fact that he told my mom that he was going to go ahead and write that it was grounded is what sounds fishy to me. It makes me think that he was doing that to cover the cable company's butt.

I'm not sure if I'm going to try to get anything out of this though. I get the feeling it would be way more trouble then its worth. The only thing I could ask them for is to pay for the TV and computer that were damaged from the power surge, but im sure there is no way to prove the the cable line not being grounded caused it. I think I will just consider my self lucky I got a credit for a month of internet, and that everything is fixed and up and running. We are going to go through home owners insurance like last time for my desktop computer, and the TV repair. And on the plus side I ended up with a different model modem then I had since we cancelled our phone service so the original issue in this topic should be fixed now, what a heck of a way to get it fixed haha.

TestMy.net's new home server is online. Most people will almost immediately be on this server. It's a monster. With 2000 Mbps of connectivity, 4 200MB SSD in RAID5 array, 16GB RAM, Dual Intel Xeon-SandyBridge E5-2620-HexCore (24 threads of processing). Intensive mySQL queries I've ran query 10X+ faster than the old server. Some things that were so intensive that they couldn't execute on the old server pop right up on the new server. It's amazingly quick. This means snappier response all around.

The old server was starting to reach full load during peak hours. Still operating correctly and handling the job, plenty of bandwidth available on tap... but the CPU load was getting higher than I'd like. So I put a more powerful server online.

    Enjoy!

Hey Dave, What is it.... like noon over there! As you can see, I don't sleep... am I a robot? You be the judge.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll be exploring more detailed statistics, basically like you're saying, in my up coming versions. It's been a goal of mine to provide detailed statistics like that literally since version one. I have new techniques that I'll be implementing that will provide my users with exactly what you're talking about.... without having to bug all my users for private information. Although, it takes time. I am the entire website... I do every aspect of it myself. But I feel that what you're talking about is 6-8 months off and that's factoring in the fact that I have a baby due in early November. I actually wanted exactly THAT to be in version 12 but I want to take some time off for the baby so I released early.

Thank you for taking the time to make a suggestion and let me know what you think. I really appreciate the feedback. Please tell your friends, TestMy.net is word of mouth

    Cheers!

    Hi Marvin,
When exactly does it shut down? In 15 years I've never had anyone tell me this... I don't think that Comcast or my service are to blame, you have to have a deeper issue it just happens that the methods that my tests evoke may be making the issue more apparent. ... or it's coincidentally shutting down.

Go to my forum at https://testmy.net/ipb and post your issue, maybe someone has your answers there

    Cheers,
