  1. Close but not the full story , I got an array of Computers running 95,Me,and XP,Pro WHY ? I am a sad person who hoards stuff , ( I still got Win 3.1 and 95 on floppies ) win 98 and 2K I would love to own legit, Maybe my car is coming up 37 years old is the clue , ( and yes I run a Eurobox as a every day car ) , but it's a disposable and has no soul , hell it's a Ford , it's warm, cosy , and does the job requied in these times , but stirs no passion , but it has a once a year service sheduel, unlike my old Citroen at every 3000 miles ( belive me, crawling on the workshop floor at 28F you bond) bit like having a wife I guess , a lot of pain , but contentment when the job is done right on a techknical note the old Citroen has 4 nipples that need loving care O/s's I run Xp pro on a 4 core 3.2Ghz with 2Gb ram, with 22 running services , it does all I need , I don't need a Bling screen , or anything fancy , just a workhorse , updating is turned off , I only work of of Sp's that I slipstream into the original disk , Hell, I never needed MicroS suport anyway, all I do is keep the original M/B disk and other drivers needed taped inside the box , with a note on the box base BTW, my Xp Pro is legit 85 % of coimputers running XP I see are not , maybe thats one of the reasons for new O/s's ?
  2. WTF ,? google has always been my sworn satanic enemy , ever since I got google updater running in the background , without my permision ( search "gupdate " ), yeah right, I give the right to google god to steal my bandwith ? , as we say in the UK "not on my nellie" , and Adobe ain't far behind in my hate list , sun Java **** don't mention that either ,
  3. I run XP pro with full firewall and AV with a total of 23 running procceses , most Xp puters I look at ( it's so slow ) have around 50-70 proceses running , I could get the 23 lower ( wireless mouse ATi card stuff ) I am a great fan of lite is fast , XP ? , you aint seen the price of Vista and 7 in the UK , , clearing prefetch is an old myth , in xp it stores 128 , for a while , and gets replaced by latest used programs , clearing it does no harm , but it takes a while to rebuild , ( slow opening of programs ) , but mabe a good move if you uninstall a frequently used program , indeed in xp you can disable prefetch , but I never saw any puter speed increase doing that , just slower program opening times same as the old Myth of disabling the 25% QOS in the Pro version of XP , it makes no differance on stand alone desktops , it's only there for local networks if selected , and only give priority if needed Microsoft make that very clear , but year on year the myth resurfaces , BTW, xp home dosn't do QOS , never seen a XP home any faster than the Pro version on the web , end of myth I guess ? or maybe not Fast sane computers , don't come from the main sream makers , ( 1 hard drive no partion ) a second drive is esential IMHO, even if it is a plug in USB drive , I keep my "C" drive to 20Gb , all saved stuff goes onto a second remote drive , it just makes for fast de-frags and shaddow copies., I just found Microsofts synch toy , a fast easy way to move stuff to a second drive it saves a lot of cut and paste ,
  4. Just to add to my last post , I just been informed by a Tame BT engineer , ( cup of tea and a cookie on a cold day works wonders ) I will have Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC ) mid Jan 2011 , 4 years earlier than estimated , around 40 Mbps down 10 up , it will sure beat my 6 x 1 I have at the moment , I might fit a seat belt to my computer chair
  5. post to add an insight to the poor old UK ADSL SPEEDS :::.. testmy.net test results ..::: Download Connection is:: 3619 Kbps about 3.62 Mbps (tested with 256 kB) Download Speed is:: 442 kB/s Upload Connection is:: 546 Kbps about 0.5 Mbps (tested with 256 kB) Upload Speed is:: 67 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Dallas, TX USA) Test Time:: 2010-12-12 09:33:29 GMT -7 Validation:: https://testmy.net/db/EIVSTPKBU&q2=B630TPKNI&dual=yes User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727) [!] -------------- "193% of your hosts average! What? Do you think you're cooler than me now? " LOL,how cool is a synch of 6338Kb down 738Kb up ? I have a low cost ADSL connection in the UK ,been with the same ISP for the past 8 years , "Pipe x" the UK originator of Broadband , never had a problem , apart from the time some thieving bars** d stole 1/2 mile of copper phone line , the average home user gets around 2Mbps . although Fibre is a option for some with 40 Mbps but it comes at a cost , within 5 years we have been promised FTTC , fibre to the cabinet ( I ain't holding my breath on that ) BTW, the test result is over 3000 miles, it's night time UK , the sun has set ( no UV shield ),my SNR is falling fast, maybe time to reboot the router ,and take the speed hit ? just posting in case any Adsl UK member drops in, and to say thanks to TMN forum , I didn't get 193% faster than my hosts average on my own ,
  6. Thanks Mudmanc 4 for the explanation , or may I say Muddy ? , sure I am just a average Joe on the internet , and indeed I have asked around with friends ( email and google search folk ) none have heard of the Net neut thing ,or sadly bothered to read up, sure I have a interest in ileagle Music downloads , I never hid my view on that , my view is Blah de Blah and not in this topic , but I agrree, I have freedom of the net , to read what I want to read , and wish the same for my grandchildren , BUT ,I do now see much disinformation on the web ,Does the Internet need policing ? , I trully don't know the answer , is the disinformation just going agasinst my veiw, ? maybe , I am easy on that that , either way as I see it the net has opened up,, (ex win 3.1 ) I have heard a rumor even cell phones can connect ? , My vote? ,,,,,,,still undecided , hell I am never sure if I take 1 or 2 spoons of sugar in my coffee , Regards Roco a member of the undecided , still siiting on the fence and still plucking splinters , and no that dont read as F**king sphilnters , ,
  7. Muddy , I admit Net neutrality thing kinda passed me by , as I guess it did most folk that just use the internet for mail and " book a cheap holiday" stuff , sure I can read up on it , but all I get is hotheads from both sides , I dont do p2p or download ilegal stuff , Just the average Joe ? , well maybe whiter than white ,I dont do Porn either , , ( past my teens and have a great g/f ) anyone got a full easy to read in plain English , why net neutrality affects me ? , and why net neutrality maybe needed or not , I aint had any problems for the past 14 years ,
  8. -------- I dont often comment on geek stuff ,as am still running Xp pro , I guess ike mot of the sane world , indeed pefetch appllies, deleting it's stored pefetch doe's nothing nor does disbleing q.o.s on a stand alone comuter indded Xp Pro has a great stand alone shadow copy facility , as long as you have floppy drive and a second hard drive , and the original disk I make one a month, and keep the original first time fully loaded copy , worst case senario is I fall back a month ,but avoid the hours of disk inputing,
  9. Just installed the arctic cooler heat pipe , sure Xp dosn't make the best use of Multi cores , but today I fitted the artic cooler pro 7 rev 2 ,(heat pipe ) I have been testing , result = OEM cooler Idle 34/34, at full cpu usage , +60 c Alarm point on my M/B after 2 mins the Arctic cooler heat pipe idle 25 /22 ,.at full cpu usage 42/40 , at that point the Temp maxed out after 10 mins of testing , .. BTW the ambient was for both tests 12 C , the interesting point for me was the added bonus of the 40% in cpu fan speed , I just like queit computers , BTW , my ambient Temp , 12 C = 53.7 F , for both tests , I had doors open and it's zero .C or 32 F in the UK , and we got snow in Nov, first time I can remember , normaly not due to end of Jan , Doors open ? . I just been fitting thermal insulation to my roof space , never needed that before , But hell, I got a socialist Goverment grant , it cost me in total $45 USD for DIY , , Dam another 5 years and I could have got it for free ,( age related ) , But was it free ? I paid enough taxes over the years, I figure just getting some of it back ,
  10. Hi Muddy sorry for the late reply , at the moment I don't know Whether I am on my ASS or head ( family stuff )...AGAIN indeed I am using the AMD OEM in the box with the Cpu AMD 3 core 440 ( 3 Ghz ) , but since unlocking the 4th core the Temp has risen , by about 2 C at idle , but the new unlocked phenom , hits the alarm point on my M/B (60 C ) while running a stress test (OCCT ) , yeah I know that is a low set point , but I value my CPU , and another build is 2 years away , I have logged running temps on the Oem heatsink , I will post up the result using the artic cooler pro 7 rev 2 ,
  11. Just to wrap up this topic Roco just got a kick into the 21 century as Computer hardware is twice the price in the UK , I build with last years components , my last new build was Mid 09 , using an AMD athlon 3Ghz 3 core , I just discovered it is a AMD phenom 4 core , with one core disabled along with 6mb L3 cache , now enabled , and running OK apart from a 4 C rise in cpu temp , now at 42 C idle , with a ambient room temp of 22 C , but stressed it hits 60 C , I just ordered a new heatsink ( running stock fromn the box at the moment ) anyone got any experiance of the http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_43&mID=305 ( I just ordered one ) Dang, I can remember the days when the CPU had no fan ,and running at 66Mhz , boot time was enough to make a cup of tea and a sandwich , now I boot in less tjhan 30 seconds ,
  12. I fully agree, Cloud ? , far to dependant on internet connection , especial in the UK , where 2Mb is the norm , I guess 8 would sell if the price was right , I recall Xp being around $400 USD , Win 7 is down to $ 250 USD in UK , my reason apart from UK cost for staying with X.p , is hardware related , ( old scanners and printers etc ) BTW , I just loaded an old box ( 1.7Ghz ) with Ubuntu 10 10 , it's early days , but so far it looks promising , apart from some driver issues ( no sound etc , ) and the add on's ? , but I need more time before commenting,
  13. Happy Birthday from Roco :'> just keep doing what is say's on the tin
  14. Hi Ryan nothing beats a new build , happiness is booting to a working O/s , well it sure beats bleep codes , and a blank screen
  15. BTW, just to add I have downloaded Ubuntu 10 10 , along with infrarecorder , and burned a disk , ( nero 8 failed ,making 3 coasters ) ran 10 10 from disk , it looks good , soon as I get some time I will install it on a spare computer , it could be my O/s of choice , and save me from loading questionable o/s's suplied by friends , ( I seem to be the only one with a legitimate Xp.Pro ) also many thanks Ca3le for the link leading to Infrarecorder, Best regards from your UK news anchor Roco
  16. not sure we have a equivalent to newegg , I use http://www.dabs.com/ , I note the Mini Mac is $1006 USD , to put prices into perspective wages in the UK are around 10% lower than in America , and our taxation is higher , ( Petrol around $8 USD a gallon etc ) the UK is very much a Make do and Mend society , and I guess the reason this latest recession isn't hurting that much ? I will give Ubantu a try on a spare computer , thanks for the link ,
  17. @$900 USD in the UK , , Although I am sure they are great , I only know one mac user in the UK , ( at work ) she say's it's very good for graphic stuff ? , But with Christmas comming up who knows ? , my last build cost $450 USD , (Tower unit ) I always build with last years must have ,( Cheapskate ) it's a AMD 3 core , running XP Pro I got Christmas 2002 , I rekon Santa's got Alzheimer's , he ain't been back since , Ubantu ? , I tried Linux Mint but never got it online , and gave up early I guess , as Tommie says , it does what I need , and Xp supports all my old printers etc , (cheap ink ) , my latest Cannon all in one costs $60 for ink my old Epson costs $15 and has twice the print run ,and good enough for letters etc , I never saw the "Xp no support" as being an issue , I got puters running win 95 , security ? , there are pleanty of 3 rd party app's that seem to cover that , I just talked myselfe into staying with XP :grin2: ,but then I was running Win M.e before that , never had a problem ,and indeed I nearly switched back after istalling XP , BTW I got an old Junior school report that says Roco don't take change easy , maybe it was right ?
  18. , I am still om Xp Pro , but due to a deal with a local charity shop ,. I am running extended desk top with 2 TLF monitors , both wall mounted , best move I ever made . apart from not buying vista , over here in the UK talk of Win 8 for 2011 ? ,anyone got any info ? , I guess for me if it's true , maybe by 2014 ,(if I live that long ) I could move on , I see Apple Mac as to expencieve , Linux and all it's versions as wanabe windows cloud as just a cloud that floats by , ( maybe I just don't trust the internet for my personal stuff ) nothing beats a second hard drive IMO, anyone got any views on the way ahead ? ,
  19. Having tried most , I only got I.E. 8 , firtefox went out the window a long while back , Google Chrome ? I tried it once , it went out the window also , but then I don't use much google stuff anyway , ( a pet hate )
  20. I stillk find a stripped down XP pro takes some beating , my note book (advent ) boots in less than 35 seconds , my desktop in less than 30 the advent has 30 mins batt power , fast booting counts batts at $200 USD , note book value $20 USD , it's no contest
  21. RTB is in the UK ? he might be a close neighbour ? , btw my speed tests to Holland are crap, but TMN USA are with 17 hops . 12 are within the UK , may be Rado's problem , it seems to depend on the ISP routing , any news on the UK testing site , we ain't got much avalible at the moment ,
  22. Oh no, the blinkered Patrotism rears it's head again , we are all world citizens , the other guy has his own ways and thoughts , sure be proud of your country , but don't go deaf to other views , Personaly , I was stateless for most of my life , in later years I became British , ( not English ) so waving a flag seems pointless to me , I owe no alegence to any Country , or Ruler , President or flag etc , only to other folk in this flea bitten world , I kinda like it that way , But if I ever felt the need to wave a flag it would be , but I don't get the urge often a cold shower soon cures that , sorry to interupt please carry on flag waving BTW, my vote was "yes shed a tear " America is special to me , I don't always agree , and at time feel like a Troll , ? maybe I have been around to long , but TMN forum has a world wide spread , my views are my own , with a European influance , and no insult ever intended Best Regards Roco UK
  23. any chance your old pc is a freebie ? , I am still on a tricore AMD and xp.
  24. We got fibre to the cabinet , ( just 300 ft away) rolling out in the UK , by 2015 my old 2 mile copper phone line will see a boost no doubt , hopefully my 8 Mbps Max will be a past memory , 8 Mbps max ? is for folk living close to the telco exchange , after overheads it comes down to 7150 Mbps at best , I syn at 6000 , on a line rated at 4000 , thanks to TMN knollege base, and a bit of DIY from accoss the pond .I hit TMN speed test in 17 hops , 11 are within the UK , ":::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 5659 Kbps about 5.7 Mbps (tested with 6152 kB) Download Speed is:: 691 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Houston, TX USA) Test Time:: 2010-08-31 13:08:04 GMT Bottom Line:: 99X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 1.48 sec Tested from a 6152 kB file and took 8.906 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: Seriously? 25. resurrected topic ? but as far as I can remember ( and that ain't far these days ) Fat 32 don't support dives bigger than around 130- G.B , with out lot of hassle . but my memory goes back to the days of 512Kb being very big drives , a cut down win 95 could be around 180Kb , , and 100Mb ram was a luxury , Hey , I must have been a rich kid I had a vid card with 16Mb of memory , nah I wasn't rich , I sold my granma in a slave auction to pay for it , now I am thinking of selling the wife for a quad core the same way ,
