  1. clearing blocked pipes , (I read the stats ) maybe the two tribes is true ? , for sure the UK is fast moving away from the "special relationship " I posted on that about 2 years back, and now the UK is closer to France and the E.U, and my toughts of regret on lossing past relationships , I guess I am getting to old for all this but I can still remenber when America and Britain danced together http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL3mHPmNKRE&NR=1&feature=fvwp ..............indeed the good old days (Sent to me by my Rock and roller grandson , , we share the same humour,) "the dark satanic mills " I guess the quote is lost by non Brits ? ,
  2. Ubuntu , ? I thoght that was a laguage only spoken by teenage African hill tribesmen , or was that Urdu , ? only kidding , keep us posted , maybe I could get weaned off of X.p . ,
  3. yeah, same for me , aparently I live in nowhere land, I think TMN needs a plumber ,
  4. oops, wrong topic or post ,
  5. Wyantm you had we worried for a while with the topic header " Pink" I have overcome simiular problems by asking at computer repair shops , ( they usualy have a stack of faulty laptop/netbook keyboards ) maybe it is generic to all aspire netbooks ? , not sure on that though , I think the key is white with black print ? , use a black key sprayed white with black letraset ect ?, if you can get a correct apspire key but not page up , try changing the print, sorry I can't help more , little point serching from the UK , BTW if it works out but looks a little odd , tell her you personal modified it especially for her is this the keyboard ( http://www.laptopsparesshop.co.uk/acer-aspire-110-uk-keyboard-new-white-kbint00670-free-uk-shipping-758-p.asp about $25 usd , I doubt if you will be able to buy just the one missing key retail , hence my sugestion of checking out repair shops
  6. Just a thought ,have you tried http://www.truecrypt.org/ , now that is unbreakable
  7. Hell, on the fire , sorry for the delay , I am not getting notifications for some reason , I was leaning over the back of a desk top computer atempting up plug in a usb devis when a PSU capacitor went Flash/ bang big time , during the knee jerk reaction I colided with the underside of the desk , this broke the slide out keyboard mounting , I am thinking of ordering one of these for the next time as I already have the "T" shirt
  8. I use an identical drive , 80 Gb 2.5 ex laptop drive for the same reason, in a usb enclosure , the enclosure is from pc world make unknown , It has 2 flying usb leads , which is inconvenient at times , On some computers it will work with one lead connected , but most require both usb leads to be plugged in , I think it’s something to do with current draw on the USB socket ,I think 500 Ma is the max per usb port , and can be seen in device manager , Can you retest the 2.5 drive in a laptop just to make sure it’s still working, ?, and maybe format it that way I run xp , so this bit may not apply , does the computer recognize the drive when it’s plugged in , “new Device found etc” , also I have found the drive can be invisible if left plugged in on computer start up ,
  9. I like the sound of your dad , I think we had a lot in common , Refurbished ? , every thing I own is home built or refurb , including the G/F , well I live in London city , no different to the boonies in some ways , I am surounded by smart asses that can't even tie their own shoe laces ,so they beat a trail to my door , anyway good luck ., I hope you find a home for the stuff ,
  10. I hope someone comes up with a sugestion , I also dont like information getting lost , parts and drawings I guess relate to Electrical stuff as oscilloscopes were mentioned ,? my first thoughts are , are there any local hobby groups that would wellcome the items , or a colledge , if some of the items go back many years maybe the manufacturers may be interested , or did your father know somebody with a simiular outlook ?, is there a magazine that carries adverts ( for sale or free) , ? I have inherited a lot of old car spares and books that way , and I have made sure they will be passed on to the right people when I am done with them ,( living will )
  11. So what’s with the anger shugs , we both been long time members, And indeed you are one of my heroes, along with many other TMN old timers , Too many great guys too mention, for sure I have thrown a hissy fit or 2 , and said WTF , I guess we all have from time to time , apart from T.G. ( another hero of a different kind ) and indeed for me a Bro for me, given time to simmer down . ( with the help of Tdawnaz ) and battling the new forum . ( my school reports from long ago said Roco don’t take to changes ) , not helped by my daughter going to the same school , she delved too deep, so Bro , what’s the real beef ? ,
  12. Xp @ 50Mbps ? , I guess that was a dream back in 2001, but I can recomend TCP optimiser , it makes a back up , although my version stops a 20Mbps , maybe later versions go all the way up ? ,
  13. we now got Live chat on TMN ? , next we will have a man on the moon , I don't do web mail either , I got dyslectic dyslectic , dyslecsic fingers , , dang , my fingers don't spell too well ,
  14. Hi Terry , welcome to the forum , indeed 16.6 Mbps is a speed most of us can only dream about , and indeed Be has a great reputation , I assume your 16Mbps is the 24Mbps package , and within 1 mile to your LLU exchange ? , I get 5.5Mbps from my 8 Mbps package , although my isp is Pipex-Tiscali-talk talk , and about 2.3 miles from the exchange , I think the only way forward is fibre to the cabinet that is slowly being rolled out , although for those in rural areas I don't hold out much hope , Regards Roco
  15. your ATT looks good , Short line , the SNR is fixed by as it says by the noise on the line , there are tools that can change the SNR , all they do is hoodwink the Dslam at the exchange , 8.5 is a little low , in the UK it's normaly around 12-15 dB , depending on your router there is a tool to raise it to +20db , but that causes a decrease in sync speed , most folk are going the other way to 8-9dB for increased speed , I can haul mine down to 6dB , but the packet loss becomes so high it ain't worth it , another aspect of low SNR can be internal house wiring , Sorry I can't help with voice over IP with a ISDN/annex B , ( no experience )

Thanks, let us know how it goes , I can recomend some good Router stat programs , depending on the router you recieve , I recently started a topic here http://www.testmy.net/forum/uk-and-european-providers/u-k-members-only-on-our-peculiar-adsl-broadband/msg319486/#new it shows some collected stats , I unfortunatly headed it "UK members ", but I think it applies to Australia also . it's where I got my Router firmware update from , While you are waiting , have you tried a quiet line test , ? with the phone dial 0 , there should be very lttle or no noise , if you get static or crosstalk that could be the problem , it lowers the signal to noise threshold, not enough to drop the router , but will bring things down to a near standstill
  17. Personal antivirus 2009/10 , I have seen that one 3 times , (not on my Box ) unfortunatly clicking on close makes no diferance nor does pulling out the phone cord , by the time it's on screen it's 2 late , (Superantispyware also removes it , well it stops it running , ) but it leves bits all over the drive , once a computer has been compromised , I do a format and reinstall , with a clean shadow copy , I find it

    Ping Issues

I think ADSL 1 in Aus is the same as in the UK , my ADSL is running interleaved due to line length , I get pings of 20 within the UK , fastpath would not be a wise option for me , (High FEC errors ) "The FEC count is the number of CORRECTED errors and in itself is not a problem. When your line is interleaved (rather than fast path) extra checksum bits are sent with each data packet which allows the receiving end to detect and correct FEC errors. " Prucent , I found using a modem/router combo ( Thompson 585v5 ) gave me better speed /pings than useing a modem , far more stable , and the easy way to get and monitor line stats ,
  19. It's often caused by the CD game changing the screen resolution , Might be a good idea checking there first ? I have seen that one about a dozen times in the past ,
  20. got to be your bandwidth IMHO , a dual core 2.4 Ghz proc, cant handle a 30Mbps input ? I just don't see that somehow ? , maybe I am wrong on that ? Personaly I would be watching my stats from task manager , just maybe too much background stuff going on ? , a great tool for monitoring that http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
  21. .....with a down speed of 30+ Mbps ? , I have never used a connection over 8 Mbps over here , with 30+ , I would be afraid to blink in case I missed something
  22. ,computer spec for 50Mbps broadband , anything above this is just iceing on the cake PC - Computer Specification for 50Mbps BB Processor 2GHz (2000Mhz) single core Memory 1GByte RAM (xp ) ,2GByte for 7 ?
