  1. Hi Rom-Dos , nice link , but I stopped at the "insert the windows CD" nobody I know in the UK has the CD , I have tried using a Xp home upgrade disk, but it will not accept the license key on the original computer, any suggestions , I have on my computer XP pro with a ASR backup made every month, so for me it isn't a problem , but friends bring their computers round with the problem , and I can't help them , apart from saving their data, any advice would be much appreciated Roco UK
  2. Hi Cholla , I like the look of your program I think it has more detailed info, Tick is much plainer looking and basic, but suits the people I know. they just use the little screen box (it can be set for size and to hide when the mouse goes over it , and for those on PAYG it keeps a cost and time log, and it's free , been using it for years, just to watch the speed on downloads or for dead links but I am going to check out MyVitalagent , Thanks I am using Tick logs to decide on my possible BB upgrade , I use 1.3 Gb a month , but sometimes 2 Gb at the moment I have 256Kbps unlimited with 3 e-mail addresses my ISP (Pipex ) can give me 2 Mbps with 2Gb limit and 1 e-mail address for the same money per month, I could move ISP but this one has been faultless so far , and support has been really good with the one problem I had with the phone line (BT) Pipex techie gave me a lot of inside info on line testing, and he monitored the result, and e-mailed me 2 a day on the progress , with a address I could contact him on , + a free dial up connection for the duratation of the problem ( BT exchange upgrade that went wrong ) ----------------------------------------------------------------- BTW, been getting a lot of = "Connection Problems Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.." you getting the same ? ----------------------------------------------------------------- P.s. is myVitalAgent Free ? I am wary of downloads that say download free , but dont mention free to use Tick is totaly free, and works on any connection , used it for 56 K dial up to 8 Mb cable , no nag screen and uninstalls like a dream , Regards Roco UK

  4. Hi Yappa wellcome to the forum I don't do much techie stuff , I have DSL. 256/150 Kbps here in UK , Tcp Optimizer works OK for me , current settings MTU 1500 TCP rw 64240 it will check latency and MTU , with the push of a button , great tool for me I can recommend a little program called Tick from Really Effective . co .uk it gives a online reading of your speed in real time, great for slow pages as you can see if anything is happening , or if you have a dead link, I have just done some speed test from UK -OZ using Chola's link , I lost about 25% of my speed 184Kpbs down 108 Kbps up . normally to UK- USA I get 243Kbps down 142Kbps up just thought you may find these figs. usefull for comparison Regards Roco UK
  5. Hi Karthic, you still running OK , did you remove the old wininet.dll, or rename it ?
  6. Thanks for that Roco UK

  8. I just got impresed with spybot search destroy , it found trojan Zlob B on a machine I was working on ,Ad- aware ,ewido, missed it , Karthic have a look at http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/dlllibrary/wininet/ or http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wininet
  9. After a scan with Grisoft AVG , it allways shows a change in boot sector, not just on my puter but all that I have seen running AVG, so I don't think that is a problem , this happens on clean installs that haven't been online , just hope this observation helps
  10. I see we got onto the meaning of life earlier in the thread, I have been giving this a thought, well IMHO, no it isn't 42 , it can only be the meaning you put into it , whatever you choose that to be, is for you alone to decide,
  11. lets agree to disagree on this , if advertising gives options , why do 90% of the UK vacuum cleaners buyers still call them Hoovers , I have no objection to advertising per se but it is the must have that disturbs me, we had a successful car add. that started by saying "make your neighbors jealous " it was a crap car Regards Roco UK

  13. Duh. funny to think someone is sitting there wondering why the latest promotion isn't working to well ,
  14. sorry Water I beg to disagree , I think must, is the key word , because you cannot want something that you don't know exists, Advertising is the real key here , a powerfull tool , the kids must have expensive trainers , to lay on the sofa and flick the TV channel changer , middle aged men with enormous beer bellies must have a football T shirt 2 sizes too small advertising also tells us we deserve it , I think they got that bit right anyway
  15. Hi Tommie , It was something I just knew I had to do, no guts involved I ain't that brave, , i just looked up the promotion ladder at the guys in those positions above ,they talked, ate,and slept the job, and were dead inside, I just knew it wasn't for me, great story about the truck , yeah people are strange, I get the same about my old 2cv, My accountant said, buy a new car , "why I am happy enough with this one" But you must want a new car ! MUST ?
  16. sums it up for me, Thanks Ca3le , still I got a lot of housework done on the puter
  17. Hi Cholla sorry to abbreviate you post, I came to that conclusion some 20 years back, I woke up on a wet Wednesday in some strange hotel, I hadn't been home for 3 weeks (Commissioning engineer ) and thought WTF am I doing with my life, so I just walked away , gave back the company car , kissed my career goodbye , traded down the house, kicked the TV into the trash can , took a year off working, renewed old friendships, No Regrets for me , 20 years on Roco UK
  18. I think it all comes down to what level you want to run at , for just cleaning up a photo Ifranview is ok , I have got Adobe and paint shop pro, I found that for normal photo improvement they were too complicated, I have been using Adobe Photo Deluxe home v3 , it came free with my scanner, it works well for me, so well that I haven't reloaded Paintshop pro or photoshop , P.S any one tried Foxit pdf reader, much lighter and faster than Adobe reader, ? (free )
  19. Just a bit of motoring news from the UK, The A.A. (not alco. anom. ) Automobile Association ,have done a survey in London on garage charges for service or repair , some are charging $312 per hour makes my $42 p.h. look to cheap mind you many of the cars I work on are not worth $300 ,
  20. Hi moon monkey I just noticed your request was for unlimited downloads, ouch, that is what costs the money, I only do 1.5 Gb a month on average , I notice Pipex do a unlimited up to 8 Mbs for
  21. Hi Moon monkey ,wellcome to the forum , good to have another UK member on board , The are My own personal thoughts on UK providers, and I expect others will disagree, the line speeds with B.T. are in a world of there own, a BT engineer line test on my line indicates a max of 2Mbs , but BT are offering me 5 Mbs ? do you know the distance to your local exchange building, anything over 2 Km , will downgrade the speed , also the age of the phone line , most UK ISP's will sell a fast 5Mb service , but you will not achieve that speed , so why pay for something you won't get , is my view , your question why can BT offer speeds that are not availible with other ISP's ? I think some sharp selling practices are going on there I am with Pipex.com, unlimited but only 256Kbs @
  22. tarnation , you are right first time cholla
