  2. You need more info before diagnosis. Saying it "freezes" is of little help. 1 How long of a freeze and how often does it happen? 2 Does the game crash to desktop or restart the computer, error messages? 3 What is your internet connection and ping? 4 Are other programs running in the backround? 5 What is your framerate? 3. I read that the 6800gt (near top of the line) 8x agp scored within 3% of the 6800gt 4x agp. Here, PCI Express 2.0 Graphics Cards Tested, shows that the $600 9800GX2 scores the same on 3Dmark06 with x16 lanes as it does with x4 lanes. With only a single lane the 3DMark result drops by 67%! If my estimates are correc...close, then 3DMark06 used 740MByte/sec. All this to say, "I don't think agp 8x is that much better then 4x, especially with your rather old card. I could be wrong, hard to believe isn't it. Remember theres a lot of marketing ploy out there." AGP 1x is 264 Mbytes/sec. PCIe 1.1 1x is 250MByte/sec PCIe 2.0 1x is 500MByte/sec AGP 2x is 528 Mbytes/sec. PCIe 1.1 4x is 1GByte/sec PCIe 2.0 4x is 2GByte/sec AGP 4x is 1 GByte/sec. PCIe 1.1 8x is 2GByte/sec PCIe 2.0 8x is 4GByte/sec AGP 8x is 2 GBytes/sec PCIe 1.1 16x is 4GByte/sec PCIe 2.0 16x is 8GByte/sec Many cards have built in throttling such that if temps go to high the card with underclock itself to prevent damage. If your overclock leads to lower results that might be happening, but you don't have a temp sensor to know if thats the case! lol
  4. On my 6800gt there is 2D clocks and 3D clocks. This allows for gaming and nongaming setups such as underclocking on desktop and boosing both the fequencies and fan in 3D. My 8600gt doesn't have that ability and I would of been forced to have the card run at one and only one fequency if not for finding this guide. By creating profiles with Rivatuner I can save my stock and OC settings and access them with a simple right click. Um if there is no temp sensor its your best guess. I would suggest "ATI tool", its a small overclocking program with built in artifact testing. If your gpu's overclock can pass the test for 15minutes and not blow-up, its stable as a rock. 5. It seems that overclocking RAM gives the least performence boost. Such as doubling the ram speed makes games run 1% faster. All the big name Ram can run above spec, all be it with added voltage. I wanted to add that the e2160 cpu can be overclocked from 1.8Ghz to 2.8Ghz and the e8400 cpu can be overclocked from 3Ghz to 3.6Ghz without added voltage. In these situations the cpu temps are nearly identical to stock. ExtremeFusion, can you notice the overclock on your P4? Do your programs run faster? 6. My edit didn't make it into the first post in time so here's what I wanted to say... The video card is independent and it's frequencies are not related to the cpu. Thus you don't need to OC it. Since cpu speed = (bus x multiplier) and RAM = (bus x ratio) they are related. If the multiplier & ratio stayed the same, and the FSB went up both the ram and the cpu would be overclocked. Thus you now have 3 choices: 1. Buy overclockers ram. 2. Lower the ratio of RAM:FSB to prevent the higher fsb from making your ram run beyond spec. 3. Buy a Nvidia or other motherboard that allows the fsb and ram to be unlinked. My suggestion is to buy DDR2 800 ram (PC2 6400), and here's why. First some specs. If I get anything wrong feel free to correct me. (bus x multiplier) = CPU speed 200mhz x 9 = 1.8Ghz on the E2160 (bus x 4) = FSB 200mhz x 4 = 800mhz Fsb (bus : ram) = ratio 200mhz : 400mhz = 1:2 (bus to ram ratio) DDR2 800 ram tells you that the ram works at 400 mhz and it is Dual Data Rate (800mhz). If your bus is at 200mhz and your ram is rated for 400mhz all you have to do is set FSB:RAM ratio at 1:2. This would result in cpu at 1.8Ghz and ram at 400mhz. Now lets say that your shooting for 3Ghz. Since the multiplier is locked at 9, raising the fsb to 333mhz would give 9 x 333mhz = 3Ghz. If you forgot to change the ratio from its previous 1:2 your ram (rated at 400mhz) would probably fail to operate at 666mhz. By changing the ratio to 4:5 the ram would be at (333 x 1.25) = 416mhz and should be happy. Now since you have exceptional cooling your going for 3.6Ghz. That would be achieved by (400mhz x 9). Well hey thats convenient your ram is rated for 400mhz. Set the ratio to 1:1 and you got cpu at 3.6ghz with 400mhz ram running at 400mhz. Now all you need is a mother board that can do bus speed 400mhz as most well made boards can.
  7. Hehe My favorate kind of question. $89 Pentium Dual Core that Runs at 3.2 GHz I belive your thinking of E2160 (200x9 = 1.8Ghz). LOL for 2 dollars more you can get E2180 (200x10 = 2.0GHz) Both processors have FSB wall at 400mhz. CPU-z E2160 CPU-z E2180
  8. Um, need a bit more info then that. If his internet cap was 2Mbps and he was at 50% of advertised, then through tweeking he might get closer to 100% of advertised. BUT If your internet cap is at 1Mbps and your running at 980Kbps your not going to get much better. Trying to remove your ISP's cap on the other had is blatantly against every law in the book! So chrisfake1, its only possable if your running in a state of under efficiently. (Below potential)
  9. The biggest single change for me was changing number connected peer limit from 10 (Utorrent) to 150 peers. On the Upload side of things I found uploading to 4 people at 10KB/s uses less bandwidth then 10 people at 4KB/s. Sorry you can't get SmartBro working.
  10. My Road Runner 10/1 on friday night was at at 5mbit down. I figure everyone off school and work cloged it up? (or it could of been the computer in the other room lol) I see different speeds from sunrise, to noon, to sunset. I would be interested to see a few of your tests done over a couple hour span. For the most part, tweaking will change your maximum and not your minimum speed (unless you make it worse). 16. Howdy folks, I'm plugging a USB 2.0 audio recorder into my motherboard which says "Certified High Speed USB", which is also usb 2.0 capable. My hard drive can write at speeds faster then 40MB/sec. The secure digital card I'm using is 133x or 20Mbyte/sec. So my 700Mbyte wave file should be transfered in half a minute, But it takes 6 minutes or about 1-2Mbyte/sec. I just got VIA USB drivers and their certified usb 2.0 by microsoft. I also set the recorder to performance mode which enables write caching of the hard drive. All the hardware supports usb 2.0, but its running at about the usb 1.0 speed of 1.5MB/sec. I need to transfer 2GB a week over this usb and I don't want to do it at 1MB per second... I welcome your suggestions.
  17. Its hard to suggest a substantial upgrade on your computer because I have a hunch that to upgrade one componet you need to upgrade many other componets. Lets see here, the motherboard has a AGP 8X slot, that really narrows your choices. AGP is becoming non existent and so are your options to upgrade on that bus. Power supply is not listed, can you take a peek inside to check it? Sorry to say but Athlon 2800+ is less then half as fast a $80 core 2 duo on newegg. Either that computer can be upgraded to last you another year (of BF2 on low-med detail) or it will have to do as just a Email and webbrowsing computer while you save for a bran new computer. $500 Gaming PC: Day 1 Componet selection $500 Gaming PC: Day 2 Testing & Analysis Best APG Cards for the Money

  19. What is your price range, power supply, and motherboard? FarCry2 requirements. 3DMark Vantage and Expreview say, that the 8800gt out performs a 9600gt by about 13%. While the 8800gt costs about 20% more ($180 vs $150) then a 9600gt. At about $160 is the Radeon HD 3870 which depending on the game will either beat or lose to a 9600gt. Also note that the 9600gt SLI out performs a more expensive HD3870X2. I have seen the Palit 9600gt as low at $112 after rebate on newegg.
