Yep Swimmer, on XP, it's optional. During the install, you will get to a screen which asks for you to enter an Administrator password. Leaving it blank will continue the install and not hurt anything as you can set one up later through Control Panel/User Accounts. It's not a requirement to finish the install. ODBXXX, if you didn't enter a password during install, when the password prompt comes up for you to get into Windows, just leave it blank and click Continue/OK. You should get right in. If you did enter a password during install and now you want to stop the password prompt from popping up period, here is a little guide/tutorial: 1.) Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords2 exactly as I've typed it here. 2.) Inside of the User Accounts window, select the User Name which you want to stop from getting passworded. 3.) Remove the check from the box at the very top (Users must enter a username...). Everything will become greyed out. Click Apply. 4.) An Automatically Log On window will appear. The selected user name will be filled in already. You just need to enter a password for it and click OK. 5.) You are now back to the User Accounts window. Click OK. 6.) The system will now start without the password prompt. Note: Before following the steps listed, be sure to to enter "Start/Control Panel/User Accounts/Change an account/*User Name*/Create a password" first.

If you buddy changed his administrator password within Windows, it should now be non-existent as you've reformatted the hard drive. Installing from a Windows XP cd should be a clean install, and it will prompt you for an Administrator password (which is optional) during the installation. Could you be referring to the password option within the bios?

fattymcbluff , Lets try this: Open up Device Manager Expand your IDE Controller Right-click on the controller which handles your Hard Drive/CD/DVD-Roms and click properties In the properties window, select the channel which has your CD/DVD-Roms (normally the Secondary Channel) Ensure that your transfer mode is set to Ultra DMA/DMA and not PIO (reboot) Note: If you have/select the option to let bios select transfer mode, reboot and enter the bios to find the option that allows you to choose which transfer mode your optical drives function under. It should be set to DMA. If not, correct it and reboot. I hope this will be of some help to you.

Although my onboard sound uses the RealTek 850 Audio Codec, my chipset (nVIDIA nForce3 250 - Audio Codec Interface) gives me an option to use it's audio drivers/software instead. It has a different set of features included that the RealTek software doesn't have which allows me to customize my sound even more. All of the extras didn't seem to matter much as the output was very low compared to RealTeks'. The bass was low, the mids were muffled, and the highs were non-existent with nVidia's offering. I just stuck with RealTek (which isn't the greatest). As Swimmer stated, the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 would be your best bet. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102163 The Creative SOUND BLASTER X-Fi Platinum 7.1 is nice as well, but without optical. The remote is nice though. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102190

Exactly. I truly believe that the 7800GS is the last, hardcore, stand in AGP architecture. We probably won't see anything else worth mentioning. The 7800GS AGP is significantly faster than the 6800GS AGP/6800GT & 6800Ultra PCIe as a single card. It's right behind the 7800GT PCIe in most credible benchmarks. The only way that any of the PCIe 6800's could beat a 7800GS is if someone were to run them in SLI. The 7800GS wouldn't be able to compete, but I'd still prefer it's newer technology (core wise).
-
Well, I guess PCIe won the battle. Even the release of the 7800GS AGP couldn't help AGP 8x battle back (although it's rumored that this card had certain limitations which can now be overcome if any future releases (7900 AGP?) were to be announced). I know this thread is not recent, but I wanted to get more opinions. Is anyone still using AGP? I am. For now.

What keyboard is it? You may be in need of software to get it to perform correctly.

In addition to the very informative link that Swimmer posted, you can download and install Kazaa Lite Codec Pack. <---- This is the latest version. It will contain everything that you need to play anything. Once it's installed, you can go into the folder within the Start Menu and configure everything the way you want it. Normally, it's fine by default. Attached is a screenshot of the settings that I use, and I don't have a problem playing music/video of any kind.

This following thread I'm linking to will also help. My last post has a link to the latest test results performed at the end of 2005. See here: What Anti-Virus Program are you running now? (Extreme Poll) On the actual test results page, you can go back as far as 2002 and view which anti-virus programs have been leading the field in actual, virus testing. Just look under "Comparative tests of antivirus programs" from the left column. I agree with Van though - (3) Average. Your computer will be vulnerable to a few instances.

It worked!

Download took a hit, but upload isn't too bad considering the distance & latency.

Well, I hadn't used Kerio Firewall since 2004, which was just a trial. It was pretty good, but I never bought and stayed with my current solution instead. Just recently, I began to have compatibility issues with my nVIDIA Hardware Firewall (may just need a fresh install of XP), so I decided to shop around for a reasonably priced, software alternative. Initially, Kerio came to mind, but I quickly noticed that they were acquired by Sunbelt in December 2005. Being that the new price of the app is actually cheaper than what the previous version renewal price was, I decided to purchase it. As far as I know, having the latest version from Kerio would mean that you are all set to go. Both programs are supposedly the same. The only difference is the brand name. When your yearly subscription is up and it's time for you to renew, you'll have to get the Sunbelt version in order to receive any support/updates as they have taken over all technical support. As you've probably noticed, Kerio.com will link you to Sunbelt's site when you attempt to download the personal firewall. There is a trial of the Sunbelt version available. FAQs

What's the link to the 12MB upload test as well as the mirror tests? Edit: Nevermind about the mirrors. Can someone just link me to the 12MB upload test from the main server?
