first the express 200 or the correct name Xpress 200 is a chipset that includes an x300 integrated. That is what was needed for betas as the IGP were not supported for the most part.. I realize that some people have been able to run Aero on the RCs... however, the latest that I have been able to find is that the xPress 200 is vista capable not vista premium ready. Meaning that the chipset and graphics are capable of running vista but may not be capable of running all of the add-on as they do not meet the requirements by themselves. So a dedicated graphic card is recommended to meet the full requirements. I was able to find :

I have not played with the new edgy elf 6.10 yet.. but one of the main reasons that I ditched 6.06 for Xubuntu was because it took so long to boot... I am able to boot in about 1min or so which is about the same time it takes to boot my xp machine. The only other thing that was kinda surprising was the fact in 6.06 the menus would not render correctly. I dont know if it was graphic driver problems or what but the screen would get pixelated.. Either way Ubuntu is a great distro if you are looking for a quick setup with what seems to be the least amount of tinker time required to get the system functioning.

motherboard and cpu are not going to work... if you want that motherboard then you need to get a CPU based on the AM2 socket. otherwise you are going to have to get a 939 socket motherboard.

What I was trying to get at was a case like this.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817165004 That would be a very bad idea.

are you sending the kill statement at the end of your php files? I am wondering if the connections are taking to long to time out.

Ubuntu... that is an interesting story... I found the installation to be really easy.. However, like just about every single other distribution my wireless card was not detected As a little side note the only distro that I have played with that actually detected and then installed the wifi card correctly was Fedora Core 5. One of the problems that I ran into was the fact that Ubuntu, 6.06 Draper Drake, seemed really slow on the computer that I was running it on. Which didn't really surprise me all that much since Ubuntu was designed, I feel like, to mimic Windows soooo much that there wasnt that great of a performance increase when ditching XP. 2400+ Mobile, 512MB, 40GB 5400rpm.. So I tried some of the variants of Ubuntu. I tried Xubuntu, the lightweight version of Ubuntu, and it was pretty good but I am still a SuSE fan. Ubuntu's claim to fame is the fact that as of right now it is the most likely distribution to allow a Windows user to make the move with the least amount of problems, be it hardware or software, and enjoy the experience. The only reason that I use SuSE is because it offers the balance between power and usability that I am looking for. It really is kind of a combination of both but with the reliability of linux and the fact that it is free!

Alright that would work... I am not all that impressed by the CPU... I would rather see either an X2 or a move to the Intel platform... For some reason Newegg has no boxed 939 X2s... kinda odd but then I guess the 939 is dead.. So here is what I would go with.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128321 This would get him the chance to run SLI if he ever wanted to and onto a platform that will have some room for some upgrades down the line. Also it gets him the dual core processor for the video editing and gaming... For processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103733 As for the case looks decent.. will work fine for this type of application.. For the power supply I would be looking at 400-500 watts. Anything that is less that $40 pass on.. There is on reason that you should hook up your computer that is worth over $1000 to a power supply that is less than $40. The quality is better and your system will be able to perform better on a better power supply. For cooling AMD is know for their cool processors. That is one of the main points this day in age since Conroe came out.. The are no longer the kings of the CPU so they are pushing Intel with who can make the coolest/least power consuming processor on the market. If you wanted to you could get some 80mm fans to go inside of the case.. I would hold off and see what the temperatures look like during the break in test.

Yes you can dual boot. This is one way of doing it... http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-15778 The other way would be to install windows first.. then partition your hard drive and install linux on the other partition... I guess I will write a guide or post a link on how to do that at some point cause it doesn't look like this forum has that yet.. But onto the first impressions... First I must say that the installation went fairly smooth and was a lot faster then 10.0 or 10.1... The reboot after the first cd was not needed.. which was nice! The new KDE is awesome! I love the new launch menu. It acts kinda like the vista start menu in a way but at the same time it is unique and pretty sweet. The only think that I would change about it would be the fact that when you move to different part of the menu you have to click to move down the directory listing. It would have been nice if it was activated by a timer.. so if you are over the directory that you want to go into after 5 seconds or so it would automatically drop down. The only thing that really bugged me was the fact that even though the wireless card was detected correctly and oem driver was installed by the installation process... It failed to work correctly So I am back to using ndiswrapper. Which isnt to big of a deal it is just one more thing that someone who doesn't know/want to tinker with the os has to do to get their network up and running. Other than that the standard software is all here.. Firefox 2.0 is installed.. Here is the first test on the system via wireless from a DD-WRT 54G router.. ::::::::::.. testmy.net test results ..:::::::::: Download Connection is:: 8820 Kbps about 8.82 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 1077 kB/s Upload Connection is:: 895 Kbps about 0.9 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB) Upload Speed is:: 109 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/12/12 - 9:22pm D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-8B5WZSAHD U-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-QANPXK49Y User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061023 SUSE/2.0-30 Firefox/2.0 Not to bad I had a windows machine at 9500Kbps earlier tonight on wifi.. BTW dlewis... I installed xp before all of this to flash the BIOS to the most recent version and since then the high pitched noises have gone away

So the latest installment of the SuSE 10.x series was released today and is now available for download. I would highly recommend downloading the torrent version. As it is currently seeded pretty well. Either way I have 40 minutes left on my installation onto my second laptop... and one of the more impressive things that I saw during the auto detect was the fact that SuSE now is detecting broadcom wireless adapters. Which is great news! no more ndiswrapper! This has been one of the largest sticking points for Linux to move to a real possibility for users who dont have a strong willingness to tinker with the os to make things work. Here is one of the screen shots from a review using KDE.. I am really excited about the new launch menu! I am planning to take this on my three week trip to Hawaii for winter training.. I have used SuSE 10.0 to the present version as an operating system for 3 servers and one laptop. I will repost my thought and recommendations on this version of SuSE once I get some play time with it.

the product that I posted and most of the new graphic card have a converter that goes from DVI to VGA.. it is that little adapter in the pictures. Here are some other great combos.. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2717610&Sku=MBM-A8N5X-3700 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2532189&CatId=1619

yeah $190 for a video card that is going to be run on a socket A system.. I would agree either put the money towards a new motherboard or CPU. There is only so much you can do on the socket A platform anymore before it becomes a money pit...
-
yeah... there are no chipsets for the socket A platform that support PCI-E.. So you have two options... either get the agp version.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150210 or make the move 754/939/AM2..

That is an interesting little project... still in alpha so I wouldnt recommend it as a primary os.. but looks like it could yield something pretty cool down the road

I would agree with that one.. Also at some point before soon you might want to think moving to an Athlon 64 or x2... The XP series was great but they are beginning to die out and it is almost impossible to find the chips anymore. If you are even thinking about running vista get at least 1GB of ram if not 1.5GB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130017 Slightly over clocked..

Alright... I tracert'ed you IP address.. you are getting some packet loss on the comcast network.. 16 * 74 ms 76 ms 68.86.148.10 17 81 ms 73 ms 72 ms 68.86.148.42 18 83 ms 110 ms 73 ms 68.86.148.106 19 72 ms * 83 ms 68.86.148.70 20 73 ms 73 ms * 68.86.148.74 21 92 ms 75 ms 91 ms 68.86.148.102 22 78 ms 78 ms 74 ms 68.86.148.90 <- not the final ip.. But the connection still looks pretty solid.. post a tracert to testmy.net.. The only other issue that I can think of would be a personal router causing the problems.. Have you tried to direct connection the xbox to the modem?

Right... However, it is all dynamic in the GMA 950... So it boot with 64mb reserved.. + 16mb for start-up processes.. The from there it has the ability to dynamically call for more ram if it is available.. Meaning that it can go up to according to the whitepaper on the GMA 950 192mb of memory.. or on intel's quick facts 224MB.. I am not sure which is correct... The thing that I am interested in is.. since this is one of the first to have Dynamic Video Memory Technology how it would decide what, video or system processes, are more important. With vista we all know that 512mb is the minimum according to MS... However, the recommended is 1GB and at least 128mb graphics supporting DX 9 to run Aero. The GMA 950 will support 128mb.. however, how does it decide what processes should get the extra system memory? Since the system boots with 76MB, 16MB + 64MB, reserved that is still means that it is lacking 64MB to meet the recommended specs to run Aero. However, a fresh install of RC1 took between 550-700mb of ram and RC2 took 46% of 1GB or about 471MB of ram.. This I guess what with no programs running. So there is improvement.. So with a system that is trying to run Aero and has a GMA 950 with the standard 76MB of system memory reserved on boot. Leaving you with a total of -35MB of ram.. or pretty much disk caching the os which would lead to really poor performance. I am not saying that it can not be done.. You are going to need at least 1GB of ram whether you are running integrated or dedicated graphics. That has been pointed out already.. I am sure if you don't install every little theme package and all of the extras you could save some system resources.. White paper on DVMT: http://download.intel.com/design/chipsets/applnots/30750801.pdf Product Brief on GMA 950: http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/gma950.pdf Vista Memory usage: http://thevistaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=3731

alright are you running their version of the LAN driver? If it crashes again can you pull the error number from the screen?

Welcome to the forum... Unfortunately you are in a very odd situation.. The problem is that the way that the % of host speed is calculated is based on IP addresses registered to the ISP.. So verizon in your case. This is great if the ISP only offers one speed for internet connection. Well Verizon does not.. It offers everything from FIOS which can max out at 30mbps download and 5mbps upload. They also offer DSL ranging from 768kbps download and 128kbps upload to 3mbps down and 768 up. So looking at your test result it looks like you have DSL.. yet the comparison % is being calculated over all of the tests run from the provider regardless of technology and package speed.

right but that is shared with system memory.. I am not 100% sure.. but i believe that system processes have first dibs on memory before video

It does qualify if you have enough ram for it to eat..
