You need a hub if you want each computer to use an external IP address. A hub is kind of like a router, but obviously you don't have any internal IP addresses. I'm pretty sure that you set up each computer as if it were connected directly to the modem. The hub is what directs the traffic to the right computer.

Firefox Support Windows On Windows, Firefox can be used with Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE). It can not be used with the Microsoft Java VM, as that can only be used with Internet Explorer. Versions of Sun's JRE older than 1.3.0_01 will not work. It is possible to install JRE 1.4.2_01 from within Firefox, using XPInstall technology. By far the easiest way to get Java working is to install Firefox with the Unofficial Installer, then install Java using XPInstall. If you have already downloaded Firefox as a ZIP file, you can add the registry information that JRE 1.4.2 and later require by hand. To do this, save this registry file to your desktop, and double-click to import it. If you are asked if you want to add the information to the Windows registry, click Yes. After this is done, you can install JRE 1.4.2 if required, then restart Firefox and use Java. If neither of the above solutions work, you can use JRE 1.4.1_05 until the issue you are having is resolved. JRE 1.4.1_05 does not require the information in the Windows registry that JRE 1.4.2 does.

Whether (insert name of browser) is the "best" is open for argument. I say no browser is 100% better than the others. Each has it own good and not so good things about it. I personally prefer Firefox. BTW, yes Opera is now free. I never understood why someone would want to pay for a browser when all of the others are free.

Ping has it's own program 'ping.com'. It's just usually launched from cmd.com/command.com.

I don't know why I didn't notice this before, but you 'TransEdGe 03' asked why your host said Transedge.com instead of Bellsouth.net, yet you have Transedge right in your user name(s). ....

I don't have FIOS, but I look in the FIOS forum sometimes. The Fiber goes to an ONT, (Optical Network Terminal?), a grey box outside your house that replaces the POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) box. Then from the box to your router or computer they run Cat5 networking cable. There is no modem with FIOS.

That's a good question. I bet a PC could especially since we already use light technology in elecronics. E.g.:FIOS and optical audio in a surround system. I have no idea how light speed is delt with in those applications.

Some sites are already starting to do just that with a technology called Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), which only refreshes part of the page just like you decribed. I haven't seen it much, but I do know that Yahoo! mail has a new beta version (invite only ) that will use Ajax. It seems very interesting to me.
