  1. Honestly , as already stated, we have no gal privacy right now. If not for the general demographics spaz, as in advertising agencies pay big bucks to gather compiled habits, we have the DOJ on everyones trail looking for those nasty keywords such as " hamburgler " , and "chocolate frosty" , to make sure were all safe from the geriatrics that might be harboring contraband in there jammies. In a browser I'm looking for simple and fast " get me to where I'm going " kinda stuff. I want to part of the block this and prettify that masquerade . I'll deal with that before it gets inside the network. Hopefully lol
  2. Wonder why she got all hot -n- bothered ? I mean if you ignore those that allow your company to thrive , eventually the pool of customers will dwindle. This is expected, or should have been. And thanks ca3le for the new " select test size " on testmy.net home page , really is very useful and quick to set what speed I want to test.
  3. There are several reasons I've seen this. If the user is torrenting, many times the IP gets cached somewhere and you have clients trying to get to the specified linked chunk. It never hurts to grab a new IP either way. I do this on average 1- ? times a week. Then again I change the local mac address to grab a new IP, find the best one and store that mac until it gets overloaded with everyone els's leases and do it again. Your running osx right ? Just use automator to restart the modem every few weeks , say at a time when no one is using the connection. Problem solved. Maybe a crappy solution , none the less unless your going to get into a mess with the ISp , seems like a viable solution no ? I've seen people not restart there modems for well over a year, many people don't even know the thing exists , or would seem as such.
  4. I can't begin to say enough about sumatra pdf viewer Why am I bothering to post this ? Because for some reason most of the time when trying to download the standard pdf viewer I wont mention , there is an issue or two. Let alone the fact it is slower than molasses in freezing temperatures to even get locally. Trash the standard , and go with sumatra PDF It just works !!! And without all the crazy corporate lawyer license agreements, sumatra pdf is GPL , in other words , free software. Do as you please with it , just make sure to leave the initial license in place to show it is free , open source , and legitimate software.
  5. Iv'e been capping out recently , almost constantly able to achieve at or even 5 Mbps above my allocated bandwidth. I suppose I should keep my mouth closed and enjoy this. For all the years my connections stunk on ice in pink tights, it's one of the small pleasures of my day.
  6. Please check the post dates, as in 2008 , bandwidth allocation was much less then it is now , although, even at that time , fios should have proven a bit more fluent connection.
  7. Internet is always morphing into another phase, many times overlapping and causing grief to one system or group. Peering issue are cropping up everywhere as nodes become more congested, forcing innovation from the top down to the end user. Ultimately it's left in the hands of the end user to decide which if any options are available. Although most sectors are controlled by allocation for no other reason then financial. Until we get past the political mandates that allow this behavior, you could jockey around from one area to another and always have one or more issues. Where staying in one place , geographically speaking offers long term benefits over constantly moving the benchmark base around. Although i agree there are issues , I would have to submit these are not geographical issues. Reflecting the concerns above, as peering, this is geographical ( end user dependent ). Which takes us back to the arguable political aspects and reasonings behind the ISP allocations. More tools are never a bad idea, time and development are left to that.
  8. Well hey , Iv'e been accused of that myself as well. When you said 5.7 , it was the give away. Although I have not found a solution , the fact Iv'e configured apache for backuppc, was a revelation I'll not get my time back from lol At this point installing bind9 for ldap is futile. Duh-me I'll work on configuring a virtual server for running it, instead of trying to do something that is likely impossible to do with the current machine configuration. Makes more sense .
  9. Your on centOS not debian , yes ?
  10. Has anyone been able to get slapd running properly on the latest debian ? Iv'e worked through just about every error anyone has ever had with an ldap server on either ubuntu or debian , and a few on centos lol Installing via apt-get , gets me no initial configuration. Running dpkg-reconfigure slapd gets me Because there is no core.ldif to copy Iv'e purged everything and used the package manager , that brings me to a plethora of other issues. Thats the latest. Just looking to see who has this server running on debian and if so , whats up doc ?
  11. No I agree , but it's not as if they can do anything about it at this point. And again , this is simply my hypothesis nothing more.
  12. Iv'e been watching this for the better part of two years. I believe they are bringing more sections of this complex online. I'm not saying this is your issue , but your exact issue is directly in line with mine , as well as so many more. As ALL digital traffic is re directed to this complex , there are issues arising. This of course is all of course my opinion based on quite some time of paying attention. I should add that the current datacenter is bloated and causing such a power drain on the current location , the first addition in 30 years to a nuclear facility is being built to handle the new datacenter. http://www.wired.com...atacenter/all/1 Source This is only mid stage from what I understand, the project will never really end. Although I'm sure issues such as this , once recognized , or at the very least acknowledged by providers ect. , and the conversation moves to the realities of this project. ISP's are being forced to upgrade / update there systems to handle the double load they are and will be required to handle. The way I understand this , the data is split , at what point I'm not yet certain , either way , data is copied and recorded at some point in the network.
  13. Great thought , what did or did not say to apple before he left. And yes I too am in a way glad I was able to experience more reality, if not some of the last generations to know what life is without being tied to social media as if it's some sort of device that we all must do. Funny though , todays version of what your buds are doing is what the world is doing, which is looking to see what everyone else is doing. There you go again , being all reasonable. You must have went outside to see what your friends were up to as well.
  14. Glad to hear this news, I'm sure that Mr.Jobs ( everyone calls him Steve like they know him , yea , so do I lol ) aar , I'm sure Steve knew well what the procedure might be after his untimely death. And I entirely agree ninja , he taught the rest of us how o think forward. Yes i can't stand that saying ( forward thinking ) , but in this case it really applies. Just as you say , look at all the copies that the world enjoys , simply because of one man with a team of dedicated people around him to peel away the reality rom his futuristic thoughts and idea's. Good for APPL As far as my appl comment , if you need productivity , reliance , and overall want to stay in the know , or the peoples movement that pushes forward on free software and it's usability , apple is the only way to go, it's just that way. Interconnectivity is so much more fluent using a system thats built around the worlds most widely used developmental systems. I'm might be the furthest away from having a disposable income as I have been in more than 20 years , at the same token, it would be utterly impossible for me if needed , to get anything other than an apple machine again. Anything less is not in the question at this point.
  15. Yes , we take what we know for granted. And somehow go on assuming everyone knows at the very least how to do more than send an email or tweet something. But thats just not the case , in any sense of it. Really it is amazing the amount of people that literally work on a computer for there income , and know less than someone that might have been using a machine for a couple years.
  16. I remember talking to people and telling them you can use another browser to access " the internet " , some of these people said things like " what is a browser " , and but I need to see my email , and " thats the only way I can get online " . Yea , wasn't that long ago really.
  17. There are a few people here that know DSL much better then myself , I hope they chime in for you on your thread.
  18. DSL , explains why you would be averaging a bit lower than your cap. How are the lines inside ? Many times they have been tapped into and have a few unethical connections over the years. Which can lead to a bit of packet corruption. There are a few people that are really good with DSL on testmy.net, I hope they see this and give there idea's soon. It's been some time for me using DSL so I would be a bit off. But make sure your filters are only on the phone side , not on the net end. Keep power lines away from the phone lines, and make sure all the connections are clean , inside lines are in good shape, and request a tech to come out and check the outside lines.
  19. The browser used to be the most popular , until ( un named ) took it over , killed it , and firefox was born.
  20. Yes i see that. Why don't you start a thread in the making it faster section, so we can get more personalized assistance , and get your connections properly set to achieve the best results we can , with what we have to work with. Because honestly , you should be reaching on average , at least 768 up , with a 1Mb connection. Post your modem / router model , and the information you just did here , ( for posterity ) , what operating system your running , and any other information you think will help , I'm sure there will be quite a few people here , in there own specialties that are more then willing to get things tweaked with you. In fact most people here are waiting to dig in and help to get the most of your connection.
  21. You likely use a modem , and or a router / switch , they may be combined with the modem. If it's combined , you should be able to access the page HERE , if that doesn't work , list your modem name and or model and we can find it. Some use xxx.xxx.xxx.254 None the less, you should be able to access some settings and adjust them to your needs.
  22. After I've used over 20Mb down on a clean line , really browsing is no different at 50 or 60 Mb, maybe a little snappier but that it. If there is an issue , there's an issue , and no amount of bandwidth will fix that lol Sure am waiting for something with the upload to come in. Soon as they get there infrastructure opened up to allow symmetrical throughput , I would think we'll see it more broad spread. Of course thats just my assumption. Of course there are still a few serious peering issues in the US. I wonder if this is a money thing , or if there are specific technical reasons why an otherwise great ISP , that supplies overall flawless connection, would have " dead zones " , ( dead zone used for effect ) lol Hell then again , I remember using 56k , it was fine at the time , not many pretties on the net , code was teensy , and all this constant tracking and programs talking to each other , phoning home , updating , all on and on , was nearly non existent. So it was fine , other than those that knew nothing of putting a smaller size image up , reducing the quality in lue of getting the browser to display it in a decent amount of time. I suppose I'll always want a little more speed, and I suppose as time goes , I'll get it , as well as need it due to so many factors in complexity.
  23. You results really are constant slowfreddy, what is it again that your connection package should supply ?
  24. Yea people get rid of them on ebay and such. I generally just keep my eye's open, so many people use the membrane style. And don't want to hear the clacking. I freaking love tactiles. when i see an old keyboard I hope it has alps and it's owner is ready and willing to let it go lol
  25. Iv'e had there 50 Mb down / # Mb up for around a year. They now offer 105 Mb down / 5 Mb up So it seems they bumped us up from 50 to 60 Mb down and kept the up the same. I would grab the 105 Mb down , but not for 179.00 / month , not a chance with only 5 Mb up , no way. Hell if they would go 50 /50 , or 100 / 50 , Id'e jump on it in a minute. I'de host everything here instead of paying for a server elsewhere. I'm sure eventually this will become a reality. Either way , nice surprise.
