i have said it before and i will say it again. put up an off topic news section then. i personally think that the news should not only contain tech items. any tech site has that. to me tmn is great because we don't loose sight of the big picture and think outside the box.

roco, you need to become a news anchor.

it's funny. here in puerto rico the locals all speak spanish. schools (public) suck and if they do teach english the teachers barely speak it themselves. the funny thing is you are more likely to run into older people that are bilingual than kids since the older generation is better educated and knows the vlue of speaking english. they are all american citizens so when i have the time i will let them find someone that speaks english when i'm getting assistance in a store. i only use spanish if i absolutely have to.

i take it this is the clip of the crew getting ready to launch a shoulder fired atgm? they launch and the soft-launch charge that prevents the ain motor exhaust from blasting anyone near the launcher goes off as planned but then the main motor fails to ignite causing the missile to flop to the ground panicking the crew? (btw, no real danger there. the missile will sense that something ain't right and not arm itself. the warhead actually only arms once it has traveled a few hundred feet downrange so as to protect the launch crew.)

Suggestion for tmn
resopalrabotnick replied to disturbed's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
oh yeah, forgot a suggestion. one beef i have is that to start a new thread i have to go through the top menu bar to the comunity home then to general discussion or wherever else i want to go an then create the topic. how about an entry in the menu bar which reads "new topic" and defaults to general discussion with a dropdown to off topic. that way just one click would bring up the form for a new topic. -
Suggestion for tmn
resopalrabotnick replied to disturbed's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
first thing i do is hit the new replies link to see what's going on in the threads i've been in. once i work through those i hit the unread since last visit to see if anything else interesting has been thrown up. i prefer this to starting from the homepage since new off topic topics also show up there. if i create a new thread i always throw it into general discussion. that way it shows on the homepage when others come in. if it's off topic then the mods can move it there. but at least the crowd that might care for the topic will have usually seen it and had a chance to reply which puts it on their replies list. on another note, as a news anchor, i try to keep the posts in the news section tech-related, but if anything sounds interesting to me it gets thrown in the news too. since there has been some complaints, i will put really obviously off topic and not big news item type stuff in GD more, the mods can then move it if they want. how about making the news section on the homepage larger, or adding an odd news section or off topic news or something... as for keeping the site free of non tech stuff, i don't see why. there are always plenty off tech threads active and providing some off topic stuff not only broadens everyones horizon a bit it also gives more variety when browsing through the site. to me it's fun to look at tech stuff, throw in help where i can and not have to leave the site to catch some light banter or non tech related discussion. -

dual core in a nutshell: instead of one core like a normal processor a dual core processor has two cores that process commands. under ideal conditions it will be able to run twice as fast as a single core processor of the same speed. however, each core represents a thread. and since most apps aren;t set up for multithreading they cannot run on more than one core at once. there is still an advantage however. dual core cpus can run all the system and housekeeping processes on one core leaving the other completely dedicated to a high powered app.

wep uses an up to 128 bit key for the transfer of information. it can be brute forced fairly quickly. wpa uses a passphrase to set up a connection and then a key generated from that key for each transmission for each transmission.(it's a lot more complicated, but that's it in a nutshell) since it recalculates new keys so much it is slower than wep, it is not actually certified for WiFi because of that, but it is a lot more difficult to break. one has to interrupt the connection then be able to listen in on the connection being rebuilt to be able to draw conclusions about the initial key. and all this multiple times. then one can try to force a disconnect again and log on to the net as the connections are rebuilt. if you can use wpa or even better wpa2 if the last ounce of speed isn;t an issue.
