To make shadows cast on something like a web from a spider. First do the shadow for the spider get it how you would like it, dup the layer of the spider with the shadow, flatten the layer so everything is in one. Erase the spider from one layer and the shadow from the order. Now you should have 2 layers, one with just the spider the other with just the shadow of the spider.

Select the web layer then choose the spiders shadow invert the selection and delete. You should now have the shadow on just the web. The spice it up, take a semi-fat eraser that is very soft and go around the edges of the shadow on the web this will make it look like the shadow is rolling over the web ie. more natural.

Hopefully you can understand that, its very hard to describe in text, how to do this.

CA3LE reacted to Blako in tcp optimiser and speeds
I am on a 10 mbit connection. If I start a download from a server thats a little busy and is only sending me data at 6mbit/sec then the other computers in the house have 4mb/s available. The faster your connection the harder it is for you to find a server that can fully utilize your capacity. If I get a server sending me data at 99% of my capacity the other users have 1% left.

The TCP optimiser (which changes RWIN) has been explained in the following way: Consider you have to move a pile of dirt from one side of the yard to the other. If you fill your wheelbarrow to the brim you will make less trips but if you loose control and spill its going to be a big mess. On the other hand you can make many small loads where any accident is going to be relatively small.

RWIN is the amount of data in bytes that can be downloaded withOUT confirmation of arrival at your end. By increasing RWIN you receive more data before saying "I got that delivery, send another one". If your on a 30mb/s line then open TCP optimizer move the slider to 30mb, select the network adapter your currently using (wireless/NIC), then at the bottom select optimal and apply.

Mind you that if your provider is have problems then all the tuning in the world won't fix their messed up network. What company are getting your internet from? speedtest.net will tell you your best case while testmy.net will tell you when there is a problem.

Internet providers show speed in Kbps, Mbps and Gbps because that's the correct scale for line speed. You use kB/s, MB/s and GB/s to describe the speed of a file transfer.

Well, your max speed isn't far off from where you should be. But you have a few lame results in there.

Check out the Automatic Speed Test. Run it for a while and gather some more data. I wouldn't worry about the cap. When I worked for the cable company the same policy was in place... but I've been told that it's not strictly enforced. If you're using your connection normally you'll be fine. What the cable companies are really looking for is massive outgoing traffic on a connection ... people abusing the terms of use. Trust me, Cox has a similar policy... I draw Terabytes and nobody's shutting me off.

Also, if you read online, in forums about people saying that they got shut off because of that. I'd bet you a thousand bucks that every single one of those people was sharing files on a ridiculous scale. Just don't get stupid, limit your sharing and you'll be fine.

speedtest doesn't usually pull accurate numbers for me.. take now for instance i'm having pretty big local issues here modem keeps dropping out, signals are bad.

so when i test at speedtest its as though nothing at all is wrong.. look

if i go by that then i'd never know anything is wrong with my connection. but the ISPs can't fool me... i'm going to keep having them come out and look into my issue forcing them to spend thousands until they fix it and give me what i'm paying $89.99 a month for, a good company wants a happy customer and i will be one when they fix my problems which they are trying to do

if i test to testmy.net or any other speedtest site that does not use flash i see results like

as you can see speedtest isn't even close. even if i test to a server over 1400 miles away on speedtest its still showing incorrect results

CA3LE reacted to dlewis23 in My New Toy (Netgear Readynas NV+)
I am quickly running out of storage space on my servers and I needed an effective way of expanding that storage and having some redundancy would also be nice. I looked into just building a basic server and put a bunch of drives in on Raid 5 but thats not really cost effective since I really need a way to expand as I go and you can't really expand a traditional raid with out rebuild it. I looked into a few other things but everything I came across wasn't cost effective or worked with in my power requirements since I'm going to be using it in a colo.

I came across the Netgear Readynas NV+ and its a pretty sweet little product. I paired it with 4 of these 2 TB hard drives http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148681

I went with 5900 RPM drives because I needed to use as little power as I can since I'm paying for the power and I wanted less heat. Plus it didn't hurt that they performed better then the WD 7200RPM 2TB drives.

I like the Readynas because if a drive fails, I just have to pop in another drive and it rebuilds the data for that drive automatically. It's pretty fast too, I'm getting about 35 MB/s read and 17 MB/s write. The write speed should go up once its in the datacenter because the switch will support Jumbo Frames, my current router doesn't support that feature.

Right now, it has 5.4 TB of protected usable storage space. If this box works out good I will be upgrading to the NVX which has more twice the read/write speed and can support 3TB drives.

My only complaint is that the fan likes to rev up and down randomly even when the box isn't being used, or just by going in the control panel.

Yeah, companies always get away with stuff in the fine print. The best we can really do is try to educate people on their practices and recommend ISPs with better practices. I just hope that the information here has and will continue to help make the internet a better (faster) place.

Note: Linking to speed test sites other than testmy.net is forbidden in this forum. This includes score images and signatures. Posting scores from such sites defeats the purpose of this benchmark. A benchmark is only a benchmark if everyone is scored based on the same criteria.

If you post a score from another speed test site... your post will be removed. If you post a link to another speed test site... your post will be removed. If you don't like the tools here, use another site... simple as that. Allowing such links only confuses things. We can only give support and recommendations based on our own benchmark that is run under known conditions. .... for all we know the other test may have the math wrong.

You post will no longer be removed for posting speeds from other sites... but realize that TMN is different than other speed tests and we give no support for their results. TMN does not know the validity of any results other than the tests taken at TestMy.net. If you have questions about results that differ from other speed tests or want to know more about why TMN is set apart from the rest read the following topics...

[r.4.01] External Links, Affiliate Marketing Links, Signature URL's and test results from the competition
[r.4.02] Note to anyone wishing to post affiliate marketing links: this is not saying that links in general aren't allowed, the point is that links that are linking to external resources are to have the same standard as the content hosted here at TestMy.net. The link also may not be a link to any affiliate program, furthermore the link may NOT forward to any affiliate program or have links within the page that link to affiliate programs. If you are caught linking to affiliate programs in our forum not only will you have to deal with repercussions here at TestMy.net, you will also have to deal with your affiliate program owner because you will be reported for illegal linking (almost all affiliate programs disallow linking to the program in forums or in sites that you don't personally own). Many affiliate programs will drop a publisher if they see activity like that and 99.99% of the time they will withhold 100% of money owed to you because of being in violation of program rules. It's not worth it... so DO NOT post links to affiliate marketing schemes, you will only hurt yourself. [r.4.07] If you try to get around a rule by purposely playing on words your account will be banned.
[r.4.08] We value all of our members but we also want a clean discussion. We have no need for anyone that is going to make our users experience less than awesome... therefore we will not and do not hesitate when it comes time to ban. Please listen to the rules and enjoy your stay. - Damon

CA3LE got a reaction from sparky in Please Help My Internet Speed To Slow
Actually, you're not in bad shape in my opinion. If your package is 256 Kbps and you're getting 229 Kbps you're only off by 27 Kbps or 3.3 kB/sec. You're also in Lithuania, dropping only 27 Kbps over that distance isn't bad.

    Now you said...

That number 30 is kB/sec NOT Kbps. The difference is in bits vs bytes, and it's a big difference... and it confuses allot of people. ... Hopefully I can explain this without losing you.

A bit is the smallest amount of information that a computer can store or manipulate. The word kilo means 1000. So if you put those together you have, kilobit or "One Thousand Bits". Metric meaning for Mega is 1,000,000 and Giga is 1,000,000,000. So when you hear, "1 Megabit" it means "One Million Bits" ... "1 Gigabit" means "One Billion Bits" -- the "s" in bps, Kbps, Mbps and Gbps stand for "per second".

Now, bytes are a collection or bunch of bits. An octet or 8 bits to each byte. Bytes are usually used to express binary transfer rates. Now, there are 1024 bytes to 1 Kilbyte so the real conversion is (bits * 8.192).

The reason we show our results in bits AND bytes is simply because different people want their information given to them differently... Some people use this site to see if they get what their ISP says they're supposed to.... and they usually like it shown in bits. Then, others use the site to calculate their maximum transfer rates (like for bit torrent)... and hence, they like the information displayed in the bytes system.

So, when talking about the connection speed of a line... use bits or bps, Kilobits or Kbps, Megabits or Mbps and Gigabits Gbps

When talking about the speed of a file transfer use bytes or B/s, Kilobytes or kB/s (the lowercase k is really just a personal preference of mine, KB/s is fine too), Megabytes or MB/s and Gigabytes or GB/s

Frontier do not cease to amaze me with yet more issues!

So recently I have been having issues with what I am going to call Semi-Disconnects on my DSL service, extreme ping times of 150ms and for DSL that SUCKS!

I made the usual phone calls to get a response of "oh, we will look into that"... yeah right. I ran some software I use to diagnose issues with my connection to find out yet again its Frontiers network causing the issues as seen in the image

I have also noticed a lot of comments in my modem connection logs like this "WED DEC 29 08:31:10 2010 LAN PC Unable to communicate with DNS Server. (error = 'connection timed out', count = 21)".

So after a little research and testing I found out that Frontiers DNS servers are probably not very reliable, just like there network... anyway I run a local DNS server on my Windows Home Server which I did have set to use the DNS servers of my DSL Modem, obviously this is the issue and now I have reconfigured my DNS server to use the following servers.

    8.8.4.4 Googles Open DNS
    8.8.8.8 Googles Open DNS

    208.67.220.220 OpenDns
    208.67.222.222 OpenDns

All of which are free and your more then welcome to drop the Google ones if your worried about Google, anyway I use all 4 so I have some redundancy if some go down and now my Ping times are back to where they should be and every single address is being resolved with no errors in my modem logs!

You may find if your using any ISP being it cable, DSL, Dial up or whatever you may want to at least try changing your DNS settings to reflect some of the above, you may get an increase in speed, OpenDns also provide a free version of the software to do this for you if you do not have a DNS server of your own and can be found at opendns.com.

Why I have a DNS server you may ask! well in a nutshell I have a lot of machines in my home with local resources that I need Domain Name Resolution for hence the DNS, it Caches all external requests speeding up my time as my computer does not need to go looking for it, I get almost a 2ms Response from the server which is fantastic! Enough of my toys already!! lol

Anyways, I hope this may be able to help some of you out there in Puter Land! it helped me and I just wanted to share my findings with you..... Hope someone gets some use from it. Ohh I also added the results of the new DNS settings

...I think it really depends on how involved you want to get with the OS. You can install a very user-friendly, hold-your-hand-all-the-way distro like Ubuntu if you like. This has the advantage of being basically the same as a Winbloze install...easy, straightforward, most decisions made for you, etc. you'll get a great, functional OS with lots of bells and whistles and FAR less bloatware than a Win build. This is probably the best choice for 90% of new-to-Linux users.

Alternatively, if you really want to build the thing from the ground up and make all the decisions yourself (window manager, services, applications, functional role of the box, etc.), then you might want to go with something like Arch Linux, which has EXCELLENT documentation, but basically just gets you a kernel and shell and lets you build out from there. This is what I did, and I've been VERY happy with the result. I'm running Gnome over Arch and over the past couple of years, I've had alot of fun developing a system that is perfectly suited to its role. Along the way, I've learned a lot about hardware, kernel install and maintenance, window managers, RAID, remote access and lots of other kewl stuff...

I'm putting together a new Win7 box right now just as a fun gaming project, but I have not regretted building the Linux system at all, and use it as my main PC all the time now. It's current uptime is over four months, with no perceptible performance degradation.

No it should forward you. Because if you had a 20 Mbps connection and you select a 1 MB test file your end result is going to be much higher then your actual connection is and then little 14 year olds like to cheat and do the my hole connection is faster crap.

It also helps if you have a person who doesn't know much about speed tests and they run a 1 Mb file on there 50 MB comcast connection they would get a much higher result then they were suppose to. Forwarding helps to stop false results.

You might check your drivers for the Sony, my Sony came with my Gateway PC, everything went great until I had to do a clean-install of vista and Microsoft did away with the original drivers and installed their generic drivers, and they did not work for the Sony, and my original OS disk wouldn't work either because Microsoft had me to download SP-2, they worked with me for about a month trying to get the Sony to work to no avail, then they sent me one of their repair disks and had me do a in-place up date, now the Sony still doesn't work, the firewall drivers in my AVG Professional are corrupted, and more wrong with corrupted drivers. They finally admitted to me that their drivers were at fault with the Sony but it seems like the more their tech support fixes the worse shape my PC is getting in. There's my little rant, and you might have the same thing going on with your Sony if they have updated your drivers for your Sony. DC

Version 10.9 final released today. I have been programming non-stop since I put v10.8 out. I'm confident enough with this new version to finally stamp it. 9 days later than expected, but I still had things that needed addressing before I could call it a new version.

I work on the site live, on a daily basis so those of you that are here often may not notice too many changes. It's kinda like when you live with someone and they get all fat... but you don't notice because you see them every day . (you have to admit, that's a funny analogy). Most software developers prefer to work offline and release everything at once. I've always liked to work on the site live. Sometimes you'll catch an error during the late hours when I'm really implementing stuff... personally, programming like that pushes me to make less mistakes... it's made me better at what I do. If I mess up, then it effects my users and I DON'T want that. So working that way has pushed me to make less mistakes. It's not a normal way of doing things but it's how I work, so shut up!

There has been 400 to 500 additional hours of programming and administrative work that has been put in since 10.8 was released >40 days ago. Remember, I'm only one person too... but I've literally been working 7 days a week to work towards v11.

Most of the work has been put towards optimization of the code. At this point nearly 90% of the code behind the site has been rewritten from the ground up. There are also functionality and design changes as well. But, as I said... testmy.net is created by one person, not a development team. I can waste my time writing change logs or I can let my users figure out what's changed and put my efforts towards something more useful.

Hope you all enjoy it, more to come.

It's most likely because you're in the UK.

I should be adding a UK and Asia server by the end of the year.

My bandwidth provider has extensive peering to the UK so the tests here will still give you a very good idea what your speeds are to most servers (since many major sites are hosted in the US). When the data has to travel nearly 6000 miles, across the ocean... over about 30 hops (I pulled a trace on your IP) you'll never be able to max out.

Unlike some other test sites testmy.net does not rely on donated servers. For quality control I like to maintain everything myself. But because of that fact there is a heavy price that I have to pay to host such servers. I recently upgraded the main server, it's way over powered.. just how I like it. I just need to get the extra money together to pick up a few more servers.

I'll most likely be picking up a European server first. My host has a datacenter in London so that's most likely where it will be hosted... I should have that one nailed down in the next 30-60 days, so there's something to look forward to. Keep checking back, once that's up and running it will be very apparent... notices will be shown to all users that can benefit from that server and traffic will eventually be automatically routed to the closest server to the end user.

I just contacted my account rep with my host. Depending on the deal we work out it may be up even sooner.

Wow, Gigabit uplink to the home!

Can you please provide a link to where you got this information?

The logistics of rolling fiber to every home in Australia would be immense.

But yes, it's definitely possible. I've even heard of 10 Gbps, 30 Gbps and 100 Gbps symmetrical fiber... not for residential obviously. Fiber has little limitation because if you hit the limitations of one strand of fiber you just need to add more strands.

Here's resource from Feb 2010 that talks about 1Gbps fiber to the home

    Resource: http://gigaom.com/2010/02/11/so-where-else-in-the-world-can-you-get-1-gbps-to-the-home/
..... all I know is that I would definitely find a use for that in my home

    uuuuhh, annoying!

I seriously don't know what's causing this. For some reason the new version of IPB has taken liberties outside it's own directory. I mean, I call upon it all over the site but that doesn't mean it should be taking the liberties it's taking.

Anyways, I got a temp fix for this... this is a head scratcher and it's stressing me out too much right now. For some reason if you add an ampersand at the end of the URL it works. So future links are now being printed with this for now. I'll figure it out.

I'm pretty sure I know what's going on. It being a 64 bit windows machine I doubt it's a driver issue.

You need to go into your sound settings in the control panel and set the audio output device associated with the HDMI to default. This is most likely not set to default. Just look for audio devices in the control panel (or something along those lines), once opened you'll see all the audio devices on your computer. Click the one the one you want the audio to output to and apply the changes. I personally think that windows should do this for you but in many cases it doesn't... I mean, you just plugged it in, I think the computer would be safe in assuming that you want to use HDMI audio out if you just plugged it in. But oh well, it's little things like that why I no longer use Windows myself.

I'm not on a windows machine right now otherwise I'd give you more details. Let me know if this fixes the problem. If you have a hard time with the limited instructions I've given you let me know and when I get a minute I'll post some more details.

So basically, it just needs you go guide it into doing the right thing... it's like 99% there, you just have to tell it to play by default to HDMI.... I've found that once this is set once Windows 7 should remember and automatically do this for you when you plug HDMI in. ... but it's Windows so don't hold me to that

By the way, I'm not at all a Windows or Microsoft hater... Just stating the obvious, Windows can be unpredictable. Windows is a great OS for most people, just wasn't right for me anymore.
