    Beta Testers Welcome

I have some new tools coming out! And I mean NEW! If you'd like to get an invite when a new Beta is available simply vote on this topic. Currently no ETA but development is moving quickly. I'd like people who are willing to provide feedback but it's not necessary. Just running the program will give me a lot of useful information.

  2. My beta gives anyone the ability to run TMN on any computer they'd like. Run it locally on a Docker images I've prepared for you or install it on any web sever, with or without SSL. It only takes 2 files, a total of 1800 bytes of code on your end. What speed will you see between two wired 1 GbE? Exactly what you'd expect to see, watch for yourself. tmn-on-my-server.mp4 The Mac and Windows machines are fairly distant, non-direct routes. The connection traverses 2 switches, then the router, then another switch also adding in about 100 ft of cable before it arrives. Not lab conditions, I wanted all of those real world variables. If you inspect I think you'll agree, TMN's results are pretty exact. tl&dr So average 916 Mbps | 904 Mbps. Adding 6% network overhead you get to 971 Mbps | 958 Mbps. Which is right in line with what we see coming across the interface in reality. I did the same LAN testing when developing the current version (v18) you're using now, always do. But now I'm giving the ability to do it yourself, super quick. ... I've also done that before but not like this. This is very different. Cut and paste a few commands into Terminal or PowerShell and you're running local tests on all your devices in a few seconds. You can also audit all of the code and understand the entire container in just a few seconds. Pretty excited to share that with you all. Curious how people will use it.

  6. Welcome! If you go to My Settings you can add an identifier. Select something like "Location 1" when you're connected to router #1... then "Location 2" for the second. You can then filter your results by identifier under My Results. Let me know if this helps.

  9. I thought this was kinda funny, did a combined test and got the exact same 767.2Mbps on both upload and download. Had to giggle at this one.

  10. Based on how the Beta seems to function, I would think it would be a prime opportunity to add a "dual" test, which simultaneously runs both upload and download. This would be nice for testing in enterprises that have their own data-centers and host VPN/Web/etc. traffic, as they can find out what types of bandwidth carving they should do. I.e., if my Buckeye 1-gig fiber supports a full-duplex 1-gig, then I don't have to worry as much about having a good upload speed when someone else is using my network. But if it's a half-duplex 1-gig, then it changes how I might want to carve out bandwidth. Just a thought, would be an interesting metric to add. Could be a purple double-arrow in the results that indicates the combined speed as well, since it's not a pure upload/download, but a "dual" / "simultaneous" / "mixed" test.

  11. Here's a photo I took yesterday. We had 77% coverage where I'm at. A Sun spot made it look kinda like Pac Man for a little bit. (the sun spot was visible in other photos so I know it wasn't an artifact) Taken on an S22 Ultra, using the 10X lens through solar filter glasses, manual focus and exposure.

I like it. Both are good. After a lot of testing and tweaking I've got the maximum speed out of my connection: about 10% more than the plan (a $10/month one) is supposed to supply. testmy.net was a big help. It might be slow for a lot of people, but it suits my needs. Thanks

    Happy Turkey Day!

CA3LE thanks for combining my posts the .GIF was an afterthought. Since Thanksgiving is finished for this year I thought I would link an old topic, I must have PMed water the complete instructions. I though they were all in the topic but they were not. Any way she followed them close enough & said her turkey turned out well. I've cooked about 36 more turkeys this way since the topic. I wish I still had the complete instructions written. I do not need them for myself but if anyone else wanted them. https://testmy.net/ipb/topic/9268-turkey-time-and-a-huge-waste-of-money/#comment-96374

    test speed error

CA3LE I decided to install a fresh Firefox portable also. Something must have corrupted this browser also. The fresh copy seems to work for the tests. I ran my antivirus & it did not find anything. So I do not know why the portable browsers got corrupted. For right now the problem is gone. I also tried the corrupt version again & it has the lag problem. So it has to be a corrupt file in it.

  16. Eventually, T-Mobile got whatever was needed with the local towers done. It STILL fluctuates wildly, but it USUALLY stays at a speed that makes things usable. At good times it runs quite well. It's better than the DSL we had. and cheaper. Unfortunately, I guess that makes the best answer is to keep calling T-Mobile when it sucks, go through umpteen "support" people, generally be a pain in the *ss, and have graphs like the above that show how inconsistent their service is. With a little luck, after 4 - 5 months, hopefully they'll get things to the point where the service doesn't drop to zero, and will mostly work most of the time! If you're lucky, it'll work well enough you rarely get buffering on the 480p tv, and downloads will be reasonably fast.

  17. Looks like they're in Pakistan. blackcobracatcher's Speed Test Results If your only seeing 2-8 Mbps here at TestMy.net then chances are you don't really have 500 Mbps. You may see great speed nearby but the internet tends to be everywhere. 🤔 Imagine this, I'm in Pakistan and I setup a 10 Gbps network in my neighborhood and get all of my 200+ neighbors to sign up. They're all super excited because after I get them connected I show them they're getting 10 Gbps using my speed test (testing against servers hosted over at my house... shhh, don't tell them that). Imagine I have 4 connections out, a few 10 Gbps connections that connect me to other local/regional ISPs but I only have 1x10 Gbps that peers well internationally. Depending on the routing, time of day and what the other neighbors are doing a customer might get 10 Gbps but may also hit the bottleneck of those connections out of the network. This is the same thing ISPs do all over the world. They oversell network capacity. You're always going to lose speed at distance but higher quality hosts/connections will take better, more direct routes and have higher capacity. You definitely shouldn't drop to 2% of the connection speed. And if that's what TestMy.net is showing you, that's what you're really getting. At least to and from the location you have selected (Florida). Here's my connection speed nearby, I'm in Colorado Springs - testing Colorado Springs TestMy.net Test ID : 2h874_xfA.hbMDDdqXt And here's to my hardest to reach locale, India. TestMy.net Test ID : L5axksd8f.xOMgtA8Sl So I'm running at 28% Download and 47% Upload I usually get my worst connection speeds to India. Testing against UK, still international and about 5000 miles I get better results. TestMy.net Test ID : ZwxVufpxD.lJx2Jf4FV 50% Download and 69% Upload. And I usually see better results than that. ?t=u&l=50&z=65&q=CA3LE's Speed Test Results This is my consumer home connection, using commercial connections gives much better results at distance. You're hitting a bottleneck somewhere. Other speed tests may paint a different picture. You should probably stop using them. Those other tests are often made by entities who have an interest in showing you a better result. I don't. I really don't care how you score. I only care to show you the truth in the best way I know. When you test at TestMy.net the servers are hosted under the most popular VPS hosts, currently Vultr is carrying the majority of my bandwidth (unbiased hosting). Where other speed tests are reported to remove certain portions of the result and highlight others; which often makes things appear faster, TestMy.net always calculates your result simply and transparently using size/time = speed. Let me put it this way, I wish everyone could see and understand the code behind TestMy.net. If you did you'd know that it's actually impossible for it to show you 8 Mbps unless you actually have 8 Mbps. The test wants to run full throttle, unless it's being restricted in some way. So it HAS to be restricted to get the results you're seeing. My guess is a bottleneck coming out of your ISP and Pakistan but it could be a number of issues that other tests for some reason never seem to notice. But if it's slowing down TestMy.net, you're being slowed down. Other speed tests obviously have different goals than TestMy.net. As @xs1 said, try selecting different mirrors. You may get better results on a server closer to you but you still shouldn't be getting such a poor result to Florida. Run some tests against IN, UK and DE to see what your results look like. Let me know when you're done and I'll post your results here in the forum for you.

  20. With a slower upload speed or higher latency it interferes with the normal flow. If the requests are lagged it will affect the result. With 100+ smaller requests the connection has to negotiate each one. The latency and upload can effect this. This will be less pronounced with linear because we don't have to keep initiating requests over and over. I went around and around with this one, trying to get those connections to ramp up quicker. Originally I was trying to make the test ramp up quicker by adjusting test parameters for that situation. Then realized that it's only doing what it's supposed to do. This happens when the connection is weak, it's only showing you what happened. If something slows down the requests or the process... it affects the end result. So keep in mind when you're using the beta, it's splitting the multithread process much more than my previous version. 100 elements for < 1MB tests and 200 elements beyond that, where the production multithread at 10MB you only open 12 threads and 200MB opens 30 threads. Big difference. The beta is more demanding. The difference is before I adjusted the process to meet the connection. Smaller tests were done with less elements. I've decided going forward that TMN shouldn't scale based on the connection, rather measure every connection the same. As the linear test does. Remember I'm only talking about the multithread process. The beta upload test works the same way, 100 and 200 elements. A couple of things to can do. Click [customize] and Enable Linear Boost or test linear on connections like that one. I've seen that too, always on crappy connections. I think you're right about it being due to packet loss. I'm going to see about detecting when a thread gets stuck like that and then reinitiate that thread and report the event in the results. It's all about how the data is being rendered. The beta is an entirely new test with different variables. These new variables seem to favor more modern connection types because they're better designed for this type of load. A bunch of small requests may be harder to render in some cases than a few large ones. But that's what we're here to test.

  22. I am not sure if I messed up the designation between B and b (Bits and Bytes). I did find the problem and I was shocked to be honest, my ASUS Strix Z-490 E Gaming MB has VI and I found it had the OBS Streaming set to Low which I guess was causing all the problems. I changed that setting to extreme (which is what iRacing is set at) I set the OBS to 10000 kbps and since then I have not had a single issue of dropped anything and am in the bitrate suggested for 3440x1440 If anything changes or I find I start getting more dropped frames I will update this thread

  25. Admin, If you send me your email address to the email address I used to register at your site, or just email me, I will bcc copy you on selected email conversations, rather than quotes, with a Spectrum VP of Operations. Regarding downgrading: In 2021, amidst the pandemic, I was using a VPN and Tor to do my Dark Web research for my third and fourth books. Was also playing with a VM. 100 Mbps wasn’t cutting it, I was also wireless at this point so I had that degradation despite upgrading my router to Wi-Fi 6 and network cards to wireless 802.11 ac/ax. So I upgraded to their 300Mbps service and saw no improvement. So I started testing and emailing results, writing and producing a song rhyming Spectrum with Rectum, and after several months of insisting that I was the problem, they (a VP) reduced my price. To me this was an admission of guilt. Meanwhile they say they bumped my service to 400Mbps. I believe this is a marketing technique to justify steady price increases and ward away potential competition in the area. Then in 2023 they sent me a notice that I have a free upgrade to 500Mbps, them not knowing about the whole letting sleeping dogs lie thing. So I started testing again, only now with Cat6/7 wired Ethernet, and could only get that speed inside of 200 miles within their INTRAnet. More like 90Mbps with FTP even then. I suspected that they could not actually deliver a 1000Mbps service to my rural area, wanted to prove it, so I upgraded to that and again could only get that speed inside of 200 miles within their INTRAnet. I don’t really need 1000, 500 would be fine if I could actually get it. There is no evidence that I can. Yet because of this corporate monopoly, if I downgrade to 500 I will still pay the same $100 per month. So I am stuck in some Charter Marketing Catch-22 bullshit here. Hence the pissed off nature of my correspondence, and my continuing persistent and relentless battle. Thank you for our response and advice, MFP

  30. Hello, I made a profile here simply so I could ask if the site is just having issues or what. I normally use this site to test out different ethernet drivers for pcs and then to see if I am having any issues with my provider. My upload test is perfectly fine multi threaded. My download single thread is fine 500 download. 20 upload. But when I start a multi threaded download test it just gets stuck. Why would that be? Also it doesnt matter where I go location wise. I have not changed any drivers or service. I am using that same service to make this post so its not like its "Down" and sites like speedtest.net work fine as well. Dankeschon, Talon

  35. I guess the better question is, is your concern the consistency of the pings, or the final number, as you have stated in previous post? I ask because as far as the consistency aspect is concerned, the spikes, or jitter, is going to be on the ISP routing end of things... not a whole lot that can be done there short of having a technician from the ISP run line dB testing, either from your personal location of testing, or from the node to your location, etc. As far as the final number goes... That is on the other end of the IP's final stop... just end distance as a factor & really cannot change that aspect. On the other hand, your trace to the fl.testmy.net seemed pretty normal give or take a few spikes. Ping 1 is you, ping 2 is you -> your switch/node , 3 is your ISP & onward. From there, is all in ISP routing. Miami, about 2 hours south from my location. Colorado, about 2000 miles away.

  36. @nanobot Look for "My Projects" under DB in the main menu (outside of the forum). Play around with it and share your thoughts. Note, results will only be saved when using the beta version (for now). When you join a project it will default the target device to the beta automatically. Another note, you can use emojis in names if you'd like. Pretty fun.

  37. Now that I type this, wonder if having a "stress test" with a mixture of block sizes would be handy, would simulate what computers / networks actually do. Some are doing really small data-loads and some are doing large data-loads. Just a thought.
    1 point
  38. Ahhhh, I see. I can definitely work that in there. Great idea... super slick. I'll add that, need to also add pagination (for when you have many projects listed). Added search functionality last night, pretty cool predictive search. Where pulls and displays the search results while you're typing. First time I've done that, it's really nice. After those elements are complete I'll reset it's databases and put it through real-world testing. After I've tested some more I'll get it out to you. Might be the fastest turn around I've done for a request, ever. And this isn't some small thing, I've been working solid on it since Wednesday. The main controller for this part of the program is currently 44 kB and then hooks had to be created across the rest of the program to make it play with everything. Probably another 30 kB. So I estimate about 74,000 characters. And that's employing my goal of writing as little code as possible to get the same thing done. ... I'm not just slapping crap together, you'll see. I wrote it and I'm not sure how because it's been less than a week (not even 5 days yet actually). And I didn't touch the keys until day 2, lol. --- seriously, funny thing is I don't feel like I've done anything. It built itself. Very useful functionality, as it's coming together I can see how it will benefit many more use cases. Can't wait to share it with you.

  39. I tried retesting with my router upload limited to 0.5Mbps up (to mimic my workplace DSL uplink) and the 10MB manual download block performs better giving about 7-8Mbps in Chrome after a few tests. With a 102MB manual block it gets around 50Mbps: With linear, it gives around the full download speed like when I do not have the upload throttled to 512Kbps. Going by your test results above, it appears you either did not limit the upload speed to 512Kbps on your gateway / router (to mimic a slow 512Kbps DSL upload) or it was measuring the 512Kbps upload limit as 39.2Mbps. The following shows the 512Kbps upload configured on my router to mimic the 512Kbps upload limit on my workplace's DSL connection. With MikroTik routers, FastTrack must be disabled (IP -> Firewall) for speed limits to take effect.

  40. Unless there's an issue with the gateway itself, the ISP should only "update" or need for a restart at most, once a month, if that. There has to be in issue with your gateway, or a signal loss issue with the connection itself for it to restart that many times. There's been months before my ISP needed to refresh/change IP or update the config. Id check with comcast to see what's going on. Possibly a bad power supply to the gateway? Gateway itself overheating? Bad power strip? There has to be a cause. This type of behavior is not normal.

  42. Welcome @Little Banshee! TestMy.net is currently only testing your single file transfer performance (on upload). This is close to what you'll see if you try and upload a single file somewhere. This also shows you what kind of streaming quality your connection is capable of. If you tried to stream over 70 Mbps, you'd probably have issues. My new beta is built around a multithread upload test. Join us in testing >> https://testmy.net/ipb/topic/34612-beta-testers-welcome/ The multithread upload test will help you see how fast you are when you combine multiple transfers together. Comparing the two tests helps you understand your connection better.
    1 point
  43. Currently the multithread option only works on download tests. The new beta multithreads upload, https://testmy.net/ipb/topic/34612-beta-testers-welcome/. Hasn't been released yet but I'm getting it ready. I suspect you may get faster speed in the multithread upload test. Other speed tests multithread by default. So you may be able to get > 300 Mbps upload but that's when combining multiple uploads together. You'll probably only be able to upload a single file at the speed TMN is showing you. It's all in how you look at it, I'd personally call that 52 Mbps not 300 Mbps. My new test will help you see the difference. Most people just want to see the big number but depending on the circumstance the same device can have a faster result either way. I see the linear test blow away multithread on my 4G connections sometimes, other times it's the other way around or it's even. Sometimes the extra connections help and sometimes they can hurt. So I think it's always best to test both ways. 52 or 300 Mbps, actually both awesome results in that test in my opinion. You'll definitely score much higher with the new test. Vote on that topic and I'll send you an invite when it's ready. I believe your ISP should deliver 300 Mbps in a single upload. If you're showing 52 Mbps then it's safer to say that you have 52 Mbps. You can stream up to that level, not 300 Mbps. If you see this across all computers on your network it may be a limitation of your ISP. Can also point to local network issues, we've even seen modem swaps fix issues like this. People will get like 10 Mbps upload on TMN but normal speed on all other tests.... they swap out the cable modem and TMN reports normal speed again, back in line with the other tests. Cases like those prove that other speed tests are a waste of your time. They've proven over and over that you really can't trust them to help you. My goal is to help you.
    1 point
  44. Every connection is obviously unique. In my case, I find that linear works better because of routing. If the other servers/connections on the "multi" test are poor routing it'll generally slow down the entire test. Now in other cases, multi-thread works better on my connection if the routing is ideal for all servers/connections involved. There are alot of variables involved. Firstly, That test is inconsistent, hot garbage. 🥴 Lastly, I'm going to be honest with you bud, I dont appreciate the disrespect your coming with right now. Firstly, there are thousands of people with actual fiberoptic & datacenter level connections who pull ungodly speeds from testmy.net & its host. Bandwidth & server specs are absolutely not in play here. TMN is on a 10 gig backbone. I have a 1 gig symmetric connection and pull in cases over 1.3 gbit. Last thing you'll do here is shit on this site. Its apparent you have issues with your cable connection & im sorry to see this, but that's on you & your ISP. There's a few things to remember. This site and speed tests are absolutely free. The info you find here is also free. The assistance you are provided is FREE. So do us all a favor and tone down that bullshit negativity towards @CA3LE and this site we have all been members of for over a decade+. If you feel you are the end all be all of knowledge in computers and networking, than figure it out, or switch ISPs to verify your problem with Spectrum cable. Otherwise, keep using other sites like ookla (speedtest.net) that throw overhead in, to bloat the results & make the end user feel better about their max connection speeds, rather than real life performance.

  47. Thankyou CA3LE for that reply, I appreciate the time you have given to this thread. here is the latest response from the ISP ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please see below for answers to your queries highlighted in yellow: Q:Are the two connections load balanced or do they aggregate into a single connection? A:This is one single Internet Service. Q:Can I make a single 2000 Mbps connection to a capable host on the internet like I can with my current 1000 Mbps connection or will I be limited to the speed of one of the two connections?" A: As this is one single Internet Service, yes you can. Q:Could we discuss and data cap as I'm a household/office and I'm not reselling bandwidth or using excessive amount of data. A: Sorry this isn’t possible as we do not have capped data plans, we only provide an Unlimited Data Internet Service. Q:Could i get a charge that's in line with the $2,275 for 1Gb to say $4550 for a 2Gb and cap my data usage? or $5050 for 2Gb with $500 going towards the upgrades. over 3yrs As above, we cannot offer a data capped plan. However please find some options below where ......has had some sharper pricing approved for you. The pricing is more inline with the figures you have quoted in the above question and if you are open to extending to a 60 month term the price per month is actually below those figures. 2Gbs Internet 3 years $4,784 2Gbs Internet 5yrs $3,912 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm very happy with this result, thankyou again for your insight, it helped me a lot. I think I'll take the 5 yrs.

  48. @CA3LE reuse existing radio service and add an additional 1Gbps radio service. internet service upgrade from 1G to 2Gb including customer radio link upgrade. Hi CA3LE, I wanted to show you a quote I received to upgrade my service from 1Gb to 2Gb. From my understanding they are adding a separate 1Gb service to run beside my existing 1Gb service and mesh them together.(???) I will list the work they say is involved in this upgrade , i was hoping you could explain more about the proposed upgrade and the nature of the connection once complete. Radio Hardware upgrade. Promiseland (PROMCS) and Bullyard SS (BULLCS) - Quotes are ready from New Agg switch should be installed ad BULLCS (YT separation) Allocate 1 x single fibre cable between BULLCS and WEBUCS: 1- Splicing is required at P2033059 2- Patching at BUNDCS 3- Allocate 1 x Single core fibre to BUDECS 4- Patching is required at BUDECS 5- Allocate 1 x Single core fibre between BUDECS and WEBUCS 6- Patching is required at WEBUCS. Backhaul Component, Internet charges ,Design and PM, Utilise QCN network to NEXTDC B1 ,Migrate the customer internet service from CITEC to NEXTDC Question, if this is correct, will the new 1Gb only come into play when my existing 1Gb is at capacity? Will it be 2 independent lines with one supporting the other when needed or will it be 2 lines meshed together acting as one Any feedback is much appreciated This work to be covered by me ,the offer is a 3 year contract at $8375 per month This includes unlimited data, for a 2Gb Business grade connection , which comes to $300,852 FYI , I've just finished paying them just over $200,000 for the hardware and setup costs for my 1Gb service Surely this new upgrade wouldn't warrant those prices? The tower(separate cost) and hardware are mine, I've not inquired about a different ISP being able to accommodate me , but I will. Here are some prices for a 2Gb connection is the city TPG Business Fibre 2000: $1,499 per month Business Fibre 2000 with Static IP: $1,799 per month iiNet Business Ultrafast Fibre 2000: $1,499 per month Business Ultrafast Fibre 2000 with Static IP: $1,799 per month Aussie Broadband Business Fibre 2000: $1,499 per month Business Fibre 2000 with Static IP: $1,799 per month Telstra Business Fibre 2000: $1,699 per month Business Fibre 2000 with Static IP: $1,999 per month Optus Business Fibre 2000: $1,599 per month Business Fibre 2000 with Static IP: $1,899 per month I'm hoping you can shine some light on the situation.

    Upload issues?

I wouldn't ignore those results. TestMy.net performs its upload test different. Where other speed tests upload many streams TMN uses normal form submission. Much like when you upload normal files to any website like youtube, gmail, facebook, etc. Currently on TestMy.net there is no multithread upload test, when you enable multithread it's only for the download. I've been developing a new version, which multithreads, graphs the result live and tests latency under load. If you'd like to be the first to test it visit the following thread. Vote or reply on that topic and you'll be invited when it's released. Comparing the current upload test to the new multithread test will be important for my users to understand their connections. Personally in regards to upload I score nearly identical on both tests. But in many cases when there's an issue you can see the multithread way out perform single thread. This is because although single threads are slowed down, when they're combined you may get full speed. But knowing just the aggregate alone doesn't really help, especially if you're trying to understand how much data your connection can reliably stream. And especially if you're troubleshooting. You're in TX pretty much on top of the servers in Dallas, there are currently 18 test servers in Dallas. That's the best selection for you but I'd still test against the other United States locales. It's a good practice to compare against other routes to show that the issue you're displaying isn't localized to one route. https://testmy.net/mirror If your connection was 20 Mbps for real, TestMy.net will tell you it's 20 Mbps. I personally don't feel like it's 20 Mbps unless it can save me time and upload a single file at 20 Mbps or stream video at 2.5 MB/s. My results can be confirmed easily. Get your stopwatch app ready, go upload a large file (100 MB+) to Google Drive (or anywhere). Start the time when you click to initiate the upload and click stop as soon as it's finished. Formula is size in MB / Time. e.g. w/ 100 MB file taking 50 seconds 100 / 50 = 2 MB/s -- to convert to Mbps just *8, so 16 Mbps. It can also be that your connection, once it's moving, gets up to 20 Mbps. But it may have a large delay in the beginning (for instance). Other speed tests don't count this, they're most often just trying to achieve the best (highest) result. TestMy.net counts EVERYTHING. If it wastes my test's time then it will waste your time in the real world. I see you're still testing on a regular basis, so you must feel that what TMN is telling you is important. TestMy.net doesn't always show my users what they want to see, it's programmed to show them what they need to see. At least, that's my goal. Sorry I was slow to respond on your topic. A lot of irons on the fire and I wanted to take the time to properly respond.

  50. Re TestMy.net Automatic Speed Test Hi Dean, Just close it. If it's not running in your browser... it's not running. If you minimized it when you started find it and close it, or close your browser completely and re-open it. To save bandwidth you can specify the test size (force it to start right at the correct size), tell it to test less frequently or turn it on for only a certain number of cycles. The test was never intended to run constantly. I think that some people feel like you're supposed to run it all the time... I'm not here to waste your bandwidth, or my own. I have to pay for bandwidth too and TMN can burn through Terabytes in a single day. I encourage you to use it as much as you need but I also encourage you to only use it as much as you need. Thank you for your patronage and support. If you like what I'm building help me by spreading the word. - Damon - TestMy.net
