If you don't have any other ide hardrives then setting it to master would be fine. Try it with master and if it doesnt work try slave.

You can format the partition you made for vista and then delete it so whatever size that partition was now becomes free space. This free space can then be added to any other partition.

I don't think vista is ready for primetime as far as drivers and therefore probably isnt a good choice as your only os. Dual boot it with xp or something so you can play around with it before making the full time switch.

Depends, do you have a model number? The specs for the battery should say how long it would last, but thats under ideal conditions.

The crack, is more of a break. The barb at the top is actually flimsy and you can move it back and forth.

I hadn't been using any caulk because all the connectors had nice seals but the actual barb cracked on the pump so it likes to spray green water all over the place. Anyways, you think that the barb I linked to would be compatible?
