  1. WTF is all I have to say to this..
  2. http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ I believe the 1.7.1 for 64 bit Windows works with Vista x64... It's free too..
  3. With vista the extra gig will make a difference probably in normal everyday use.. XP...Borderline...If you are like me and open a gazillion things at once, and have 5,000 things going at once, then it will also help. More ram can never hurt. Probably make a boot a bit faster and be a little more reactive.
  4. For dual channel you need to match them, or you will have problems most likely. Normally you buy them in pairs, as they have been tested to work together. I've used a mix of different brands on the same board, but they were the same timing/speed. Best to buy a dual channel set. Your board probably can only run on either 1, 2 or 4 chips. Mine is like that. 3 chips will not work. You can run a single chip, one set of dual, or 2 sets of dual. For your needs, I would just look for the cheapest 2x1024 set you can find.... Edit: by cheap I don't mean bad ram, just generic..I don't think overclocking ram with really benefit you for the price.
  5. It depends on how much money you want to spend...Memory can get expensive if you start looking at overclocking ram.. I've been using OCZ ram for a while now, and I like it, but it all depends on personal preference.. This is cheaper ram, but I've used it with no problems- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2824012&CatId=1352 You could max out the ram for about $260. I've set that ram @ CL2.5, without errors. If you don't plan on overclocking, don't go crazy on the ram....Generic ram will probably be fine. The better ram is generally only going to benefit you if you do a ton of video encoding, gaming, or overclock beyond 10%(depending on other system components of course). I attached CPU-Z, it will give you info on your ram/processor.
  6. You can only use DDR400, unless you upgrade your motherboard. With Vista, you will notice a difference just by adding another gig, to give you 2gig. Or you could add more.. Are you using the ram in Dual Channel(if your board supports it)? Do you have 1 - 1gig stick, or are you using dual channel (2x512)? If you are using a single chip, you would notice an increase in performance by using dual channel as opposed to single channel. Most DDR400 boards can handle up to 4 gigs, so you can run 2 dual channel sets (2x1024/2x1024). If you have 2x512 already, you can add another 2x512 set, or even a 2x1024(some boards say to use the same size memory sticks if populating all, including mine, but I've used 2x512 + 2x1024, and it worked fine). Most important thing with the memory, as far as being compatable with the existing ram, is the speed(ddr333/400/etc) and the timing(CL2/2.5/3.0). Most likely you have CL3 memory...You could get a slight performance increase with CL2 memory, but if you do not play games, or do anything truly intensive, you wouldn't notice the difference.
  7. Unfortunately, this is still a grey area IMO...Pretty much they are getting away with ripping people off by saying "up to", if they never plan on offering speeds anywhere near the "up to" speed. I had this problem with OOL(cablevision). We paid for 10/1, but got maybe 2 out of the 10mb on the download most of the time, and NEVER got anywhere near 10. Basically I took many speed tests from various places and at varying times during the day, while saving the screenshots of the tests/etc. Then to disprove their "it's your pc" excuse, I brought my pc to a friends and tested it there, again saving screenshots of the tests/etc. Then, I had them come to my house several times, to test the speeds....Each time they got no where near 10mb, not even at the pole outside... I must have had them come to the house 5 times...Eventually I got a refund for 6 months of service(took forever to get them to "remember" the refund...Had to call a supervisor and tell them we were promised a refund), but we did get the check finally...Which went to Verizon for Fios, which proved without a doubt that my PC was NOT the problem, as I get full speeds 24/7 now. To make a long story short, collect as much info to prove what your actual speeds are...Then, if they offer free service, have them come to your residence, and make sure there is nothing physically wrong with the service, and to see what speeds they get... Then all you can do is state your case...The laws are so vague right now, IMO, that they can pretty much give you anything they want, and use the "up to" clause to get out of it...BS in my eyes, but thats the way it is here...To me it would be like a gas station saying it's premium is "up to" 93 octane, but they sell you stuff that is 87 octane all the time, with no intention of ever giving you more. A legal scam IMO.
  8. I've used this multiple times on friends computers after they lost connectivity due to spyware removal/infection...

    power supply

I will speak from personal experience... I build a system with an FX-60 dual core, and an 8800gts. I thought 550watts(antec neo HE) would be enough(I already had the psu from my old build). Well, long story short, the pc would run for about 30 seconds, then reboot...After thinking is was everything else, I finally realized it was the PSU. It was not bad, as it works with my old system with a 7800gts, it just couldn't handle the amps. You need a lot of AMPS for that card. Don't get stuck on reading into the watts....MAKE SURE THE AMPS ARE WITHIN SPECS!! I put a 650watt BFG(not my favorite, but was only one at the time I could get my hands on that met the amp rating) and all problems were cured. If you are going to spend a couple hundred on a video card, you might as well spend for a decent power supply, considering the PSU is probably the single most important part in your pc. Put a crappy PSU in tower with great parts, and you will end up with a crappy/unstable pc. Plus, by saving maybe $75, you chance blowing up every part in your pc. Please don't disrespect such a fine video card with a crappy psu. Would you put Pep Boys tires on a Ferrari? Edit: Plus, there is nothing like finishing up a build, having it all nice and neat with wire ties and all, only to have to tear the entire thing apart...IMHO, what ever PSU you think you need, go bigger. You may need it in the future, and having too big a power supply will never hurt, but having too small will cause headaches.
  10. Do you have a soundcard installed by chance? I had a problem with an x-fi card, where I had to move it down a pci slot, or everytime I installed my video card drivers the pc got all funky..Conflict I suppose..Never found out why, just know as soon as I moved the soundcard to a different pci slot, it worked fine. If they will take it, RMA the mofo, and see if it continues to happen.
  11. What are the specs? When you reapplied the thermal paste, did you unseat/reseat the processor? Perhaps it was not seated properly? It actually sounds like the problem I was having with my new build, which turned out to be an insufficient PSU. Even though the ratings were all within recommended specs, I could not get the pc to stay running. I put in a bigger PSU, and all problems disappeared. It wasn't so much the Watts of the PSU, but the Amps. Especially if it has a higher end video card, make sure it is rated for enough Amps as well as enough Watts. From what I understand, you are saying you don't get any screen at all? No bios screen? If you can get in bios, watch the voltages and see if they are low, or suddenly drop. If you haven't already, I assume you have, take out the onboard battery, and if needed move the jumper to clear the CMOS. Try booting with minimal components, and see if it boots. Then add components one by one. I know the feeling If all else fails, tear it down to parts again, and start from scratch...Been there/Done that..
  12. Lube yourself up before you buy it, and you won't feel so bad
  13. This program is made for getting rid of the old drivers. I have had problems with old nvidia drivers being left over. Uninstall the drivers, run this(selecting to delete the old driver files), reboot into safe mode, run it again. If files are found, delete them, and reboot once more into safe mode, and install your video drivers. If you don't find driver files when you scan the first time in safe mode, you can just install the drivers. Just check the option for "nvidia" drivers. Edit: not sure about vista now that I think about it.... Edit on the Edit: I changed the file to the one for vista....

  15. LOL sorry, means free installation I'm a bit today.. too late to modify it I guess you could add this too..

  17. For anyone that lives in a populated area, I would strongly suggest you install a car stereo that is sirius/xm ready. This way, you don't have to listen to a retransmitted version of your satelite radio, and you will avoid any static/interference. It is going to cost a little more money, but the sound quality is worth it. I get crystal clear sound anywhere, and everywhere I go. I have never had one ounce of static, or bad sound. I drive 4 hours to visit my father, and I never lose signal, or get any decrease in the quality. However, I have heard many people complain on Long Island about the sirius/xm. They complain about the static, and other interference. I find these same people are using the FM transmitter.
  18. It runs in the family I guess....My father and my mother both look very young for their age... And Roco, thanks for cleaning up the pics...They look a lot better... I think I actually still have that Atari in the attic somewhere, along with the Coleco Vison.
  19. Ok, I have been going wacko trying to figure out what the hell was going on with my IE7. (I know firefox/opera/blah blah blah is better ) Anyway, I was having problems when trying to access secure websites, such as online banking. I tried everything, including removing any expired certificates etc.... Long story short, I finally figured out that an option on Kaspersky was causing this.. Under Settings/Service/Network Settings, if you have it set to check encrypted connections, you will get the certificate error. Once disabled, the error does not occur.... I'm using x64, but I get this error under 32bit IE7, so I assume it would cause the same problem under x86 XP. Just figured I would point this out to anyone else that uses Kaspersky and IE7.
  20. I'm on the 30/5 as Just stated.. I get full speeds 24/7 365 days a year. We have had it over a year now I think, and I have yet to have one slowdown/outage. The only problem I had was when I upgraded the firmware on my router, and that was resolved in 3 minutes with tech support. I get comments on gaming servers all the time...When I play in BF2 servers in NY, people have asked if I live in the server, because I will have a ping of like 5-7ms.
  21. I found a picture of the last gaming console I had (seriously ) The picture below it shows my parents photography skills...(not sure who's finger that is)
  22. I agree, but the way it is worded makes you wonder... To me, that could means any group other than bars and businesses....If you have 3 people over watching the Superbowl, that could be considered a group... So, I can watch it by myself on a 60" TV, but if I have a few people over, we have to break out the 55" ?? I guess it is all on how you interpret the word "group". Basically I wrote a quick email to the NFL stating that they may want to consider rewording the rules, unless they actually mean what I stated above...
